Chapter 41. Orchid was amazed
Orchid was amazed when she heard flashlight, yes! It does flashes when it turned on and it is a source of light. “Not bad, flashlight.” Orchid nodded her head in satisfaction at the name. “Okay, we’ll go with that.” She agreed to Boss’ comment.
“They’re finally learning how to properly meditate, eh?” Orchid circled around the two who had a blank look on their face with their eyes closed, seemingly deep in meditation.
“I guess you can say that.” Boss handed the flashlight back to Orchid and asked, “What’re you going to do about Roselyn’s situation?”
“I thought about it and I’ll give it a few more days.” Orchid replied. Boss nodded his head in understanding. She then flicked the flashlight in her hand off and opened the door. “Can’t you teleport?” Boss asked.
Orchid froze momentarily and closed the door shut behind her. Her body teleported out of his sight. Boss shook his head, Orchid was a weirdo in his mind, she shows up whenever she wants and uses the door when she could teleport.
“She’s gone.” Boss stated. The two boys who was meditating on the bed exhaled and gasped for air. “Bark bark.” Barkie patted the head of Arthur with his paw. Freaking damn near suffocated yourself to death. It berated.
“You two should be trying to meditate, not hold your breath.” Boss calmly stated.
“But Boss, you can’t blame us there, she just appeared out of nowhere.” Arthur replied.
“We had to give Auntie Orchid a good performance.” Arthur’s words were serious as Boss rolled his eyes from underneath the sunglasses. “Instead of performing, why not actually doing it.”
“Get back to meditating.” Boss commanded.
Michael and Arthur complied and tried their best to meditate. Inwardly Arthur’s mind couldn’t calm down, both he and Michael overheard what Orchid mentioned about Roselyn. What did she mean by a few more days?
Arthur became lost in thought as he continued to guess about Roselyn, which then led to thoughts about the baby. His mind continued to wonder, not focusing on meditating at all. He eventually thought back to his mom and dad. I wonder if they miss me.
…
“Are you alright Samuel?” Angel asked the nervous looking husband standing beside her. “Yeah, I’m alright.” Samuel wiped away the sweat on his forehead and exhaled to calm himself down.
“Want me to knock on the door sir?” Benjamin walked up and asked.
“Wait—”
Benjamin knocked on the door causing Samuel to scramble and steady himself. The door slowly creaked open as an old lady peeked her head out. “Who is it?” She asked.
“I-it’s me.” Samuel stammered. Hearing a familiar voice, she opened the door completely wide open and stared at the man before her. “Sammy!” The old lady in her late early 60s pulled Samuel in for a vigorous squeeze.
The old lady realized there was more than just her Sammy at the front of the entrance. She peered her eyes at the beautiful silver haired woman with enchanting blue eyes. “Oh, if it isn’t Angel the son stealer. Hmph.”
“Hi, mother in law…” Angel greeted the old lady before her with a sigh. (Do keep in mind, Samuel and Angel are only in their mid-30s)

“I don’t talk to son stealers.” The lady completely ignored Angel and her eyes turned to another figure behind them.
“Benji!” She shoved Samuel aside and rushed in and hugged Benjamin “Benji! Are you doing okay? Is my son being mean to you?”
Benjamin eyed Samuel thinking about how to respond. Samuel saw his mischievous look and gestured to him to cut it out.
“I’m doing great, the lord is very welcoming of me.” Benjamin politely replied.
The old lady smiled brightly “That’s good! Come in, come in!” She led them into the giant mansion of a home. Tea was quickly being prepared as servants around the house scrambled to accommodate the guest who had arrived.
“How many years has it been, my son?” She looked at the nervous Samuel before her. “E-eleven.” Samuel stuttered.
“Eleven! You haven’t visited me for 11 years. Even Angel visited me more times than you! The old woman paused and calmed herself down, she told herself that her son just came back after 11 years, she can’t be yelling at him like this. She coughed and calmed herself down “Ahem, why have you come? I’m not letting you get Winston too.”
Her reply caused Samuel to cough, he was the one that asked for Benjamin a few years back, and he sent his own wife to do it.
“No, no it’s nothing like that mother, Benjamin is plenty.” Samuel tried to appease his mom.
An older gentleman in his mid-50s arrived. “You called for me madame?” He had shimmering blue hair down to his back with magenta eyes.
“It’s nothing Winston, just prepare us some snacks, would you?”
“Right away, madame.” Winston left as quickly as he came.
Looking at the still nervous son of hers she couldn’t help but soften up. “Come here, let me have a good look at you.” Samuel walked up and knelt before his mother. “You’ve aged. You’ve gotten fatter too” She bluntly stated.
“Mother…” Samuel weakly pleaded.
“Shush you, showing up here after 11 long years without even as much as a letter.” The lady continued to bicker. She then sent Samuel back to his seat and asked.
“Why have you come to Tryn?” The old lady got straight to the point as snacks arrived at the table.
“It’s nothing…”
“Nothing my ass, tell me or I’ll tell your father.” The old lady picked up a biscuit and ate. Angel and Benjamin were also enjoying their time with the snacks, it was only Samuel who was too nervous to speak.
“I—uh I have a problem.”
“You don’t say? Why else would you show up at my place after 11 years.” The woman threw a cookie at Samuel. “Eat it and calm down.”
Samuel ate while she waited. It wasn’t until the plate of snacks were gone at the table did Samuel feel calm enough to speak.
“I have a problem…”
“Go on…”
“Angel and I had a baby.” Samuel instantly tensed himself for his mom’s lashing and berating however, none of that came through. He peeked one eye at his mother who replied. “I know.”
“You knew?” Samuel’s eyes were wide with shock.
“Angel told me when she was here to get Benjamin.” Samuel’s mouth was agape as he stared at his wife. How come she never told me?

“Where is my grandson anyways? 11 years and the boy has never even met his grandma, are you waiting until I die for you to bring him here?”
“I, uh no, I mean he’s not here right now, He’s—”
“Out with it already.”
“He’s going to Cheshire for schooling.” Samuel tensed again and peeked an eye after noticing nothing happened. His mother was holding a teacup high in her hand almost ready to toss it at him.
He immediately closed both eyes and tensed himself again.
Sigh “You’ve brought a big problem to my doorstep you know that?”
“Why now? Why Cheshire, why Naturelle? Why the Tillowisk Empire!? Did you not read the letter? Of course, you did, why else would you be here.” The old woman continued to ask questions that did not need to be answered.
Samuel could only stay quiet and wait for her to continue.
“Fine, I’ll let the main family in Zeldova know that you’re disobeying the King’s decree.” She replied after thinking for a long while.
“Will they listen?” Samuel asked. He was worried the most about whether or not he’ll receive the main family’s protection on this.
“Of course, they’ll listen, you think your father and I and the rest of the side branches are weak? We can topple those arrogant idiots any day if we wanted to. It’s just that it’ll cause unnecessary bloodshed and make the Galafray’s name weaker.” His mom assured.
“Remember this my son, we are no less inferior to the main branch, in some ways we’re far superior, especially when it comes to disobeying orders, we have more leeway in that regards because we’re not directly underneath the King’s umbrella.”
Hearing what his mom had to say Samuel sighed in relief.
The day after Arthur left them, they went back inside and decided on the next course of action, Samuel believed that having the Galafray’s name would be enough to deter the king. However, still worried after an hour of thinking about it he asked Angel and Benjamin about what they could do.
Benjamin brought up his mother, which was instantly rejected by Samuel because he was afraid, he’d get punished by his mother and father for getting married to Angel.
The last time they’ve met was at his wedding where she explicitly told him to see her after the wedding to talk about his decision on marrying Angel. They had another girl in mind when Samuel dropped a bombshell that he was getting married to Angel the next day.
Seeing the anger in his mother’s eye on the night of the wedding Samuel took Angel and everything else he could and settled in Rouge for the next 11 years. During that time, they had Arthur he was enlisted to go to war as a frontline Exotic by the King.
Normally, Exotics were a last line of defense, but Samuel and his cousins were tossed to the frontline. This was believed to be his father’s decision for not telling them anything about Angel. A form of long-distance discipline, both Jacob and Dylan were tossed in by his aunt and uncle at the request of his father, since they also knew and didn’t mention anything.
Eventually Samuel and Angel agreed that an angry mother was far better than strangers with the same last name in terms of help and support.
“Now Angel, come here, I still need to yell at you for marrying my son.” The old lady led Angel into the kitchen. Samuel wanted to stop his mother, but Angel told him it’ll be okay.
“How dare you marry my son! ... (How’re you doing?)” Samuel’s mother whispered to Angel.
“(I’m doing fine)” Angel whispered back.
“You no good son stealer! ... (Thanks for bringing him here.)”
(It was Benjamin’s idea)
“The other girl was better! ... (She wasn’t.)
(Ahaha)
The sounds of yelling continued to be heard as Samuel shuddered from the verbal abuse spewed by his mother. Colorful language he didn’t even know existed were being flown around. Eventually, the shattering of a plate onto marbled floor silenced the kitchen and the angry stomping of his mother could be heard as she huffed her way into her room.
Samuel was worried that Angel didn’t walk out and was about to get up when her silhouette came into view. Sighing in relief Samuel sat back down as Angel walked on over.
Winston made his way out of the kitchen with a sweeper and a dustpan filled with shattered glass towards the group.
“The madame said it’s too late for you to journey on home, so stay here for tonight. In separate bedrooms.” He continued. “We have three guest bedrooms ready for you, come right this way.”
“I’m sorry Samuel, your mother specifically stated we can’t be together tonight.” Angel closed the door on Samuel’s face. Benjamin saw depressed look on his lord’s face and walked over.
Pat pat “There, there my lord, maybe she won’t be as angry once we’re home.” Benjamin patted Samuel’s back, it wasn’t sure if he was deliberately annoying Samuel or not.
Winston led the other two further deeper into the mansion as far away from Angel as possible. “Here are both of your rooms, don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.” Winston stated before letting the two into the room for them to sleep for the night.
Hours passed by in the night. Everyone was asleep except for a silhouette. That person slowly tiptoed towards Angel’s door and softly knocked on it.
Angel who wasn’t sleeping yet got out of bed and walked over to the door and opened it.
The person immediately let themselves in and locked the door behind them.
“It’s time to gossip all night girl~, tell me everything about the past years.” The person was none other than Samuel’s mother.
Knock knock another knocking followed shortly after Samuel's mother entered, it was Winston at the door with snacks in his hands. “I’m sure you two will be up all night again, so I’ve brought some snacks.”
“Thank you, Winston, won’t you come in?” Angel asked.
“I’m fine, thank you I’ll make sure Samuel doesn’t show up.” Winston stated and closed the door again.
Angel smiled and led the mother-in-law onto the bed. “Where did we left off at last time mother-in-law?”
“Oh, come on, Angel, it’s Elizabeth when Samuel isn’t around.”
“Yes, Elizabeth.”
“Tell me more about Arthur, does he have any friends?”
“Yes, there’s a few of them in fact.”
“Go, go, go we only have tonight.”
“Ahaha, alright.”

The Ingress Estate
Jonathon Eucole. Soldier. Scholar. Now an Initiate, the dedication without dedication, he finds himself both prisoner and master of an arcane edifice, the Ingress Estate, which can neither be escaped, nor controlled; only diverted, maintained, and pacified. This is a gothic fantasy story, set in a world in which gods and the afterlife are not only real and known, but were both established in living memory of some of the inhabitants after millennia of arcane warfare with the being who constructed the mundane reality the humans occupy. But this isn't the story of those who colonized the afterlife at the cost of their own humanity, but a somewhat more ordinary man, in somewhat extraordinary circumstances. This is also a LitRPG-lite, which means there's a system of sorts, fragments of which can be observed through Jonathon's eyes. Don't expect level-up screens, or statistics, or indeed numbers much at all, beyond those the inhabitants of the world itself apply to understanding their own reality. It pretty much doesn't matter to the story, I mention it so those who don't want to read LitRPG at all can successfully avoid it here. I don't have any particular plan here, just some ideas inherent in the genre. This is a character concept I toyed with some years ago; an old man, bright of mind but weighed down into apathy, both by his past and his responsibilities for a terrible estate that cannot be left without stewardship. Don't expect any kind of overarching plot or story, because that's really not what this is about. Also don't expect much dialogue. Or character development. Or much of anything, really, because I've planned nothing in the way of an actual book, here. Other relevant information, if you've read this far for some reason: The MC isn't super-powerful to begin with, and probably never will be. He's a veteran with some useful skills, and the insight on how to use them, so can deal with the world's ordinary threats reasonably well, but not too much beyond that. --- Currently on hiatus, as currently the story has a rather poor ratio of effort-to-personal-payoff. I may return to this once I have a clear idea of how to get the stories where I want them. I've started a more standard LitRPG using the same system. But if you like intelligence characters who cleverly min-max their classes, it probably isn't the story for you; it's the story of a rather ordinary guy who winds up in a very similar universe.
