《Godmaker's Gem》Volume 2. Chapter 1. Dis

Following the hooded figure, I stepped through the gate.
For a second there was a slimy feeling that was soon followed by the sensation of a strange sense of comfort.
As if I returned home.
The place where we arrived was a huge hall made from black stones made in a gothic style. The ceiling was so high that there were literally grey clouds under it.
Around us were huge torches and candles lit blue flames painting dancing shadows onto the walls.
Then there was the silence, peasing on us, making me think that I went deaf, till my guild talked.
"This is the space between the words. Each person sees it differently. Through it, you can access different worlds and realities. Just be sure not to wander too far away or you might find yourself somewhere you don't want to be."
He snapped his fingers, making an old wooden door rose from the ground.
"Go. They are waiting for you."
I nodded and before I went through the door I shifted back to my humanoid form with my mask on to fit in.
Yet again I found myself in another place.
It was an office of some sort. The walls were made from wood and the floor was covered with a red carpet.
In the middle of the room was an office desk made from black oak that had some objects on it, like papers, crayons, and so on.
Behind the desk, was a large window, showing a lush forest covered in snow from an impressive altitude.
"Where am I?"
"WELLCOME MR. RIGHT."
?! What the...
On the farthest end of my desk was a wooden box, with buttons and dials on it, that started to speak without any notice.
"SUPRISED? WELL, IT'S UNDERSTANDABLE, YOU ARE FROM A WORLD WHICH FOCUSES ON MAGIC RATHER ON TECHNOLOGY. THIS DEVICE IS CALLED A RADIO, WE USE IT TO TALK WITH OTHER MEMBERS OF OUR ORGANIZATION AND IT CAN PLAY PLEASANT MUSIC FOR RELAXATION."
"A radio? Who are you? And where am I?"
"RIGHT. MR. RIGHT, I SHOULD START THE INTRODUCTION. MY NAME IS YI BEI Tm I'M ONE OF THE FOUNDING MEMBERS OF OUR ORGANIZATION AND RESPONSIBLE FOR HUMAN RESOURCES."
"Human resources?"
"RECRUITING, ORGANIZING, SELLING, BREEDING, HOUSING, DISSASEBLING, PAYING, THESE TYPE OF THINGS.
Why did I hear things that shouldn't be in this kind of sentence?
"YOU SEE WE ARE IN A GREAT NEED FOR YOUR SERVICES. HAVE BEEN EXPANDING OUR INFLUENCE TO OTHER TERRITORIES IN THE COURSE OF THE LAST CENTURIES AND SO WE NEED SOME SPECIAL PEOPLE TO DO SOME SPECIAL WORK. LATELY, WE HAVE BEEN HAVING SOME... PROBLEM WITH OUR SECURITY. NOTHING TO DANGEROUS, OUR STAF COULD HANDLE IT JUST FINE, BUT THE BOARD, ME AND THE OTHER FOUNDERS, DECIDED TO ITS TIME TO MAKE A DIVISION THAT WILL BE TASKED TO PROTECT US WHILE WE DO OUR WORK HERE AND FIGHT FOR US IF WR ARE ATTACKED."
"So you need an army general. Why not chose someone who is stronger than me and has experience with this type of thing?"
"... MR. RIGHT, YOU HAVE BEEN ASKED TO JOIN BY THE HIGH PRIEST OF THE VOID RIGHT?"
"..Yes."
"THE HIGH PRIEST IS ONE OF THE BURAO, BUT NO ONE SEEN HIM. HE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR RECRUITING TALENTED PEOPLE LIKE YOU. EACH RECRUIT HE FOUND FOR US, BECAME A HUGE ASSET FOR US."
This sounds strange. I have been elected by someone who stays in the shadows?
" MOVING ON, THE PLACE YOU ARE RIGHT NOW IS CALLED DIS. MOST PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT IT'S THE CAPITAL OF HELL, BUT IT'S MORE THAN THAT. DIS IS LIKE A PATCHWORK OF DIFFERENT WORLDS. WE SPECIALISE IN WARIUS BUSINESSES WITH OTHERWORLDS AND BY OPENING PORTALS TO THESE WORLDS WE LET SOME OF THERE ESSENCE IN CREATING NEW BIOMS AND MAKING THE CITY GROW LIKE A LIVING ORGANISM. FOR EXAMPLE, A NEW FOREST ENTIRELY COMPOSED OF POISONOUS MUSHROOMS JUST APPEARED A WEEK A GO. IT WAS SUPPER FUN TOO SEE!"

That's not a laughing matter!
"TO FACILITATE TRAFIC, WE HAVE INSTALED RAILWAYS AND TRAINS, METAL CARRIAGES THAT MOVE ON THERE OWN, SO IT WON'T BE DIFFICULT TO MOVE AROUND. RIGHT NOW, YOUR DESK IS LOCATED AT A WINTERFOREST BIOM WITH A PORTAL THAT HAS BEEN CLOSED FOR A LONGTIME WHICH IS PERFECT FOR TRAINING! ALSO, THERE IS A MAP WITH A BOOK IN YOUR TOP DRAWER IF YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE."
"Can I ask something?"
"SURE."
"How much do I get paid?"
I accepted the invitation because I had nowhere else to go, but I was also promised to receive compensation if I complete some tasks and this was a full-time job! If I have to do this I want to be early compensated.
"...PAID? RIGHT, YOU ARE NOT A LOCAL AAA WAIT A SEC..."
From the radio, I could hear a lot of people talking and arguing with each other.
"....OKAY, SO THE SALARY IS 200 YAW PER MONTHS, WHICH IS AROUND 800 GOLD COIN FROM YOUR WORLD. YOU WILL ALSO GET TWO DAYS OF EVERY MONTH PLUS HOLIDAYS.
"I accept."
"PHEW, thank god. THE RECRUITS AND YOUR ASSISTANT WILL ARIVE TOMORROW, SO REST WELL. ALSO, THERE IS A SECRET PASSAGE BEHIND THE WALL AT YOUR LEFT, IT LEADS TO YOUR DORMITORY. I HOPE THAT YOUR WORK WILL BE PROSPEROUS, MR. CAPTAIN OF THE SECURITY DIVISION."
The magic bo- I mean the radio turned off, not saying a word.
Did I got scammed?
Still trying to wrap my head around all this, I went to the wall next to me and tried to find the secret passage.
While sliding my hand through the smooth surface a small part of it slides back under my hand.
Then next to me, a portion of the wall silently went into the ground, revealing the hidden passage.
"Wasn't a door enough?"
I went through the passageway that led me to another room.
It was nothing fancy just a double bed, a chandelier made of pure gold, a wall made of glass showing the outside, with a swimming pole on the balcony, and something that looked like a bar.
"D-Did I became rich by accepting this job?"
Deciding that I need answers, I went back to my office and looked at my desk.
"Oh, sweet mother..."
The book that the ma-I mean radio talked about was very thick, as thick as my arm.
"What did I got myself into?"
*****
- Tomorrow, ??? POV:-
"Departement of Security. So it really exists."
I and my pears left the train and entered the grey building that was stretching up in the sky like all the buildings here.
There is a rumor that the whole planet is actually a living being and that we are right now inside of its veins,
It was a stupid rumor, that made no sense but sometimes we can hear things, things that-
"Everyone! We found a billboard!"
Pushing these thoughts out of my head with his words I followed the others to the billboard.
On it was a list of our names, our future jobs, and logging.
"Ha, so we will stay in the main building! How long has been since we slept in a bed?"
"I know man, I could kill for some sleep."
Over their shoulders, I finally found my name.
Emily Yang, Unit 1. leader, Unit leader private room. (Must show up at division captain's office when arrived.)
I was expecting to be on the top of the rank lather so it didn't come as a surprise nor did what I heard not far away from me.

"Eh, I am co-leader?! Who is this idiot who made this?! I will have a word with this place's captain to change it immediately! And they even put a commoner over me, what an affront!"
It was my classmate Nicol Bei. She was the first daughter of the wealthiest family in Dis, who supposedly were the descendants of one of the greatest founders, Yi Bei.
She had silver hair and eyes with a petit figure that she tried to compensate with her attitude.
I couldn't even understand how did she even end up here.
She was bad at everything she did, only being decent in offensive magic, and her bounding level with her familiar was terrible. Plus, contrary to us, 'commoners' who trained and studied at the point of sweating blood, she just waltzed in with a recommendation letter.
AAAA, no point in thinking about it, I should just go meet the captain.
I entered the building with everyone, then following the map that I always had on me I went to the captain's office.
It was a simple wooden door with a golden name plank on it.
MR. RIGHT, CAPTAIN OF THE SECURITY DEPARTEMENT
Just Right? Is he a commoner like me?
Sometimes some families don't have a family name. Lately, this trend started to disappear due to marriages into families that had family names, but there were still some cases.
I hope this means he won't be a prick.
I knocked on the door.
"Enter, it's open."
I did as the voice said.
Inside, an old man was waiting for me, sitting behind his desk, reading what seemed to be our guild book.
He had white hair and a neatly cut mustache, with chalk-white skin, paired with a pair of brightly glowing green eyes.
" Sir, Emily Yang reporting for duty."
Per training, I saluted him by placing my right hand over my heart mad the left close to my leg.
"Calm down, you have already been accepted here, there's no point in being upright. I would ask you to sit, but I can't find any chairs in this damned building."
He...was not what I was expected. Every teacher in the academy was super strict and rude, saying that our captains will be the same. Yet this old man before me seemed like my village's grandpa who often gave us sweets.
"Well then let's get this started."
He looked under his desk, looking for something, sowing me his slightly long ears.
Is he a half-elf? How rare!
"Found it!" He took out a sheet of paper from a drawer. " So your name is Emily Yang, you were born in a village of the Ration District, you have graduated top of your peers, and in your questioner about your future you wrote and i quote: ' I want to be a member of the top society of Dis.' Right?"
"Yes sir!"
"There is something I don't understand. You have the brain and the ambition to become someone famous at Development or at Deals, so why did you volunteered to come to a division that just started?"
He looked me in the eyes that seemed to become cold for a second.
"I...I believe that joining a division that just been made can give me more opportunities than at the other divisions that have an old hierarchy."
"...I see. You want to advance without anyone being above you, am I correct?"
"...Yes."
He kept starring at me which was kinda discomforting.
Being a commoner who worked on a farm, my hair and skin were brown and my eyes were almost black, making people from another district uncomfortable by our presence.
"...I understand. I hope that you will found what you are looking for!" He threw the paper behind himself. "I personally don't care where you are from. If you can do the job then you will get paid for it fairly. People should really move forward from this racist- classist mindset, don't you agree?"
"Yes, captain."
" ....Right, I still can't get used to being called like this. Just call me boss or something."
" Alright...boss."
"...You know what? Let's keep it as captain for now."
His demeanor and way of speaking almost made me laugh, exactly like a grandpa should act.
"You may go. Tomorrow at eight, come back here, I will give you your first orders then."
"Yes, sir!"
I saluted again and left his office.
******
"Aaaahhh, I need a drink. "
I can't do this! I will resign! I want to go back to be an earing!
I couldn't finish that damn book, and I even had to prepare for the arrival of these guys! This is too much! I can't do this anymore!
Even playing this nice old man act is so stressful!
Bamm!
Suddenly, my door was bashed open by a small girl with silver hair.
"Are you the captain of this division?"
"...Yes, I am. And you are?"
She seemed infuriated by my response, she just barged in, and slammed a piece of paper onto my desk.
"I am Nicol Bei and I demand that my place be changed with that's commoner!"
"What?"
Hold on, I have no idea of what you are talking about.
"As I said, I want to be the leader of the first Unit. I can't believe that a worthless commoner could be a better person at command than me!"
Oh, I get it!
"You are the co-leader, right? You, don't need to worry, you will soon have your own unit when the new ones will arrive so don't worry. Till then, please try to endure it."
My plans was simple. When the first batch is ready I will assign them as leaders of the following units and make them train them. This way I only need to deal with them for the first wear and after it's done I can relax.
"One year is too long! I demand to be the leader now!"
Kid, you caught me in the worst mood to pick an argument with me!
"...Miss, do you realize who are you talking to?"
To scare her I slowly stud up, while turning into my monster form with the mask on.
Seeing my sudden transformation she broke out in cold sweat while baking to the door.
"I am the captain of this division. As my subordinate, you will do what I say or I will kick your ass out of this building faster than you can even understand what is happening. Do you understand?"
She said nothing just nodded.
"I said do you understand?!"
"Y-Yes!"
"Good! Now as punishment for being disrespectful with your superior you will come here tomorrow at 6 in the morning to receive your tasks!"
"Eh-six its a-"
"You dare talk back to me?! Fine, you will show up at five and if you are a second late, I will make sure you will be sent to a place so disgusting even rats avoid you! Now get the hell out of my office, you are crying all over my carpet!"
She ran out my office, crying like a baby, without closing the door.
"Sigh, what did she even thought when speaking to a superior like this? Why do I feel like crap now?"
DIIIIII! MR. RIGHT YOUR ASSISTANT JUST ARRIVED! SHE IS COMING UP RIGHT NOW.
"R-Right, thank you!"
Damn, I almost had a heart attack from this thing!
I toyed a little bit with the radio, but I still couldn't figure out how this thing worked.
"I hope my assistant will be a little bit helpful. ... I raised a flag didn't I?"

A D&D Gamer in Garweeze Wurld
He doesn't know how he got here, and while the trappings are familiar, he doesn't actually know where he is, either. From the perspective of those around him, Duromar is a half-ogre barbarian, an uncivilized brute by any standard you care to use. But from his perspective, he's a character created in a gaming system. From either one, he must live within the rules of that system. This is the story of a gamer who ends up in a game that's just a bit off from what he knows. ---- I wanted to write something a little bit old-school. Most of the LitRPG I've found seems to be based on computer RPG styled stories. Progression through levels is fast, and depending on the game, skills and even attributes can be trained with or without class levels. This wasn't true with the older pen and paper games, and that's the style of leveling I wanted to write.
