《Slime of Gluttony》-Chapter 2- New form and a Lesson on Skills
Advertisement
HP has reached acceptable levels. Allowing for consciousness... complete.
Ugh... what in the world happened...? I feel really bad, honestly. Like, sore, and like I'm squished down... oh, that's because I am. I fell, right? Like, a lot... and then I think I fainted or something. If I was something else, that might have just killed me. Maybe being a slime isn't all too bad! Eh... actually, I wouldn't be wherever I am now if I wasn't a slime, probably. I'd still rather be human.
So, I fell a lot, right? Makes me wanna know where I am now. The floor below me is still this stone, but it's much less... smooth? Before, it felt almost manmade, but this is probably just created by the planet itself. Like, maybe a cave! Oh, wait, that could be bad. Who knows what kind of monsters and stuff are in here! Creepy...
The air is also really dense... I mean, I don't have lungs, so I don't think I breathe the conventual way. I would say I use diffusion like some sorta unicellular organism, but I think I'm way too big for that. What a mystery... well, it doesn't exactly matter! Maybe I work sorta like fish, but instead of water, I take in just simple air! I don't know, I didn't go to school for most of my life. What do you think I am, some sort of biologist? Well, I'm not! So, the way I breathe will remain a mystery.
Okay, just staying here doing nothing is going to get me nowhere. It's time to move! So, I replicate the same movement I used to move yesterday, moving just a little bit.
Alert. You have entered dungeon: Dungeon of the Abomination. Are you sure you want to continue?
... huh? Wait, no, no. Come again? What do you mean I entered a dungeon! All I did was move a bit, how does that mean I entered a dungeon? Of course I don't want to continue, but now I don't think I can! Damn it, I must have already been in the dungeon, but me moving finally registered as me entering... what kind of logic is that? Well, I guess I was asleep and everything, so it might be good that it told me now.
Well, I now know that I made a huge mistake coming here! Not that it was even my choice...
Okay! The first thing I need to escape this dungeon! I'm sure this will be fine. The worst that could happen is that I get attacked by some monster or something... wait, that would be really bad.
Alert. Dungeon: Dungeon of the Abomination is attempting to take over your mind. Amount of time left before loss of will: 3 days. Quest issued. Escape Dungeon: Dungeon of the Abomination in the required time. Quest information: The Dungeon of the Abomination is making an attempt to hijack your body in order to add to its monsters. It will take three days for the dungeon to completely take over your mind. Either find the exit or destroy the dungeon core. Failure will occur if three days pass or you die. Quest rewards upon completion:

- Continued ownership of free will.
- Gain skill: Soul Resistance >LV 1<
Quest failure punishments:
- Loss of free will.
- Possible death.
Accept Quest? Yes No
Or not. Seriously? You wanna run that through me again? Like, I could literally lose my free will if I stay in this dungeon for too long? How is that fair?! You know what, God? You suck! First, you reincarnate me as a slime, and then you put me in this hell hole? What is wrong with you!? One guy can't handle this much stress! Fine, yeah! Of course, I accept! I'm going to die either way if I don't escape this dungeon in time.
Quest accepted. Good luck.
If I could, I would sigh... at least this one is nice, unlike a certain A.I I know...
[The voice has no set kindness. You are making things up in your delusions of desiring acceptance.]
And, it's exactly as they say. Speak of the devil and he shall appear! Can't you just leave me alone? I need to think!
[Just as you are stuck with me, I am stuck with you. Deal with it.]
Oh, and there's that 'deal with it' again! What, is that your catchphrase or something? Maybe I won't deal with it! Have you ever thought of that? That's right, I bet you have nothing to retort! You must be flabbergasted by my simply amazing and clever words.
[It is not my catchphrase. I have no such thing]
I knew it! That's all you could come up with! That's pretty pathetic if you ask me. Anyway, you're wasting my time! I need to find a way to get out of here... this is going to be super hard if I can't see. Although, it would be pretty dark already, so that doesn't change much. Maybe I should just go in one random direction... oh! I heard in mazes if you stick to the left, you'll eventually find the way out! But, that might be hard to do...
Oh, that gives me an idea. A.I guy, you have a desire to live, don't you? Well, if I die, you die too! So, you should help me get out of this dungeon!
[I am not programmed to feel any sense of self-preservation... jump forward and activate Gluttony now.]
Eh? Why should I?
[Do it now.]
Geez, aren't you needy? Fine, fine... I guess I will, even if it might be dangerous. I don't exactly trust you, but I don't think you have a reason to lie either! Wait... how do I activate skills?
[Just think about it. Quick.]
Isn't that extremely simple? Well, you sound sorta frantic about it... okay! I propel myself forward, focusing myself on activating Gluttony... just thinking about it,
Uh oh, it didn't work. And, I landed on something sorta big and scaly. Part of my body slipped a bit and covered it... wait, what did you just have me do? Huh? Ow! Something just bit me!
You have taken 1 damage.
I took damage? Isn't that really bad? Come on! What if I die here! That's like twenty percent of my health! What did I land on?!

[Fine. I'll do it myself.]
Wait, what are you going to do yourself? I don't like how that sounds!
Gluttony has been activated. You are left with one HP.
Hey! You can't just activate skills without my permission! Especially not that one... whoa, huh? That feels super weird. It's like my body began to engulf the scaled thing I was on, getting bigger and then reverting to its original size in an instant.
You have consumed: Demon Lizard. Form Gained: Demon Lizard You have obtained skill: Night Vision >LV 1<
These two notifications came at me one at another, alerting me of Gluttony succeeding... Oh, great! Night vision, that's soooo useful! Now I can see in the dark with my whole zero eyes! Woohoo! That totally wasn't worth it! Well, I seem to have gained a form, whatever that means.
[I am not surprised you have forgotten. A part of your skill, 'Gluttony' you are able to control the bodies of the enemies you use Gluttony on, allowing you to implant your soul into this soulless body. This is the only available way for you to see as of now.]
Oh? Oh! That's actually a genius idea! I'm so glad I thought of it. Just goes to show how smart I really am.
[It was I that told you to--]
Oh, shush! I already know how genius I am, you don't have to tell me twice. Now, if you don't mind, how exactly do I turn into this Demon Lizard thing? I mean, I could probably turn into it by myself, but it would be quicker to just ask you.
[It seems you have grown cocky after one success. Figure it out by yourself.]
Wait, what? Hey, you can't just say no! Come on, you know you want to say yes! I'm in real danger here left with one health point while just a little slime! A pebble could kill me! Oh, wait... oh god, anything could kill me now! Hey, hey! I really need to turn into that Demon Lizard thing, please! I'm begging you here! I'm on my metaphorical hands and knees!
[This tone is much preferred. As I said before, you need only to think about it, fool. Activating skills is but a matter of tapping into your SP energy source. It is an incredibly simple task.]
S... what energy?
[You are truly stupid. SP is an energy source in one's soul. It is the basis of how skills are activated. For your extremely puny mind to understand, SP energy makes skills work.]
Okay, I didn't get a single bit of that. But, I get it! Just think about activating the skill and it will work. That's actually pretty simple! I'm sure I'll get it in no time.
...
...
...
An hour passed, and I did not get it in no time. Somehow, this was really hard... I'm pretty lucky nothing attacked me, honestly. So, things aren't that bad! I'll probably get it soon!
[While I am not programmed to have an understanding of what you label as 'comedy', this is quite hilarious. You prove time and time again that you do not understand words spoken to you.]
Hey! Just because I'm not super talented or anything doesn't mean you can insult me like that! I'm doing exactly what you told me to do!
[Incorrect. You are not trying to consume SP energy. You are just attempting to activate a skill with no energy. Compare it to something like flipping a light switch on when you have no electricity and wondering why there's no light.]
Well, how am I supposed to use Sp energy, huh? You won't explain anything to me! Even if that analogy is pretty easy to understand, you still make no sense!
[SP energy is stored in the soul. Visualize using your soul as energy while attempting to activate a skill and it will work.]
So, soul energy? Weird... uh, okay. What even is a soul? I've always seen the concept as like, a circle or something...
[You could think of it like that, but it would be incredibly wrong. The soul is the same shape as your body, as the body is a container for the soul. As the body changed, so too does the soul.]
Huh? My soul would just... be in the shape of me? And it changes to fit its container? You know, that sounds a lot like a liquid. Are you sure a soul isn't just a liquid?
[It is not, but perhaps for a fool such as you, seeing it as such would help. Taking water from a lake in your cupped hands and using the water in your hands as energy.]
Oh, I get it! Well, thank you! I think that's the exact thing I needed to get it! Take some of my soul or whatever and then use it to activate a skill. Now, let's apply it in practice. I do exactly what I was told, thinking about taking some energy from my soul and then using it to activate a skill. In this case, Gluttony, and changing into this Demon Lizard thing...
Wait, I think it worked! It felt sorta off, but in pretty much no time at all, I'm in a different body! It was so fast I couldn't even tell what happened...
Oh my... it's so amazing to have eyes, ears and a nose again. Without them, this life is truly bland! Er, well, I'm definitely in a dungeon. Looking up, there's a huge hole, light shining through from the top. I guess that's where I fell from. Huh, I wonder why it's there, though. Right now, I'm in this circular area with four ways to go. In the middle, there's this broken pillar, the top half of it just straight up missing. It probably was lost with the roof or something.
Hm... now, which path should I choose?
Time limit for staying in form: Demon Lizard has begun. Remaining time: 5 hours and 59 minutes.
Wait... there's a time limit?!

The Emperor's Chef
"Cook like your life depends on it, kid. Because it does." Charles had an enviable future lined up for him. Training from the age of five by some of the finest chefs in the world. Schooling at a top culinary academy in the capital. An honorable position as heir to House Boulier, a line of merchant-lords who have charmed the rich and powerful with their cooking for centuries. And in a single night, it all burned to ash. When the outbreak of war destroys his hometown, Charles is charged with escorting his family’s sacred treasure—a recipe book passed down for untold generations—out of harm's way. But his simple mission grows complicated when he’s captured by one of the most feared battalions in the world: the Spears of Mercy. Life as a prisoner in their war camp is brutal and uncertain. Charles has few allies and even fewer strengths to rely on. Only his skills in the culinary arts, honed over a lifetime in the kitchen, are deemed useful enough to keep him alive another day. But he’s not out of hope just yet. With a dash of wit, a pinch of luck, and some very creative cooking, he might just find a way to recover his family’s legacy and take back his freedom. This project is a food-themed fantasy that centers on cooking and chefs. The setting spans a wide world featuring ingredients/recipes both real and inspired by traditional fantasy. I'll eventually be publishing it as a full-length novel (or series of novels depending on length). These are the first draft chapters. I'll likely be re-writing more than once, then editing before publishing, so impressions and feedback are quite welcome. If you like the story so far and you're interested in being an early reviewer for the final product, feel free to message me. I'm looking for an artist to make some concept art and a cover (the cover shown here is just a temporary placeholder). A stand-alone novel for now, but it may turn into a series down the road.
