《The Necromancer's Notebook》Document Six

Document Six Will try new experiment. Have tried circulation theory. Tried on dogs. Found boy with puppies at pharmacy, purchased whole litter. Boy asked if could visit them, and told I would be sending to friend in other state. Very annoying. Did controls. Used solution as with first subject on some, others with cold as with steward. Others replaced organs for pumping blood with machine while still warm, or artificially warmed from frozen. Artificially warmed, very bad failure. Totally dead. Warm, and cold, as with first tests, as successful. Living dogs. Pumps on warm worked too, much better even. Dogs clearly hear and see, respond, if violently, to all stimuli. If trained, think might have answered to name or obeyed. Different breeds perhaps less violent. Wrote copious notes, then burned when remembered would not pass to Patrick. Must remember only. Buried puppies too, in bag with rocks. River. Not alive anyways. Not alive even when alive. Useless. Attempted re-engineer of steward’s heart. Did not thaw since did not work with dogs, but has been up and moving long enough was already thawed, so replaced organs with artificial. Heart with small hand pump, and stomach with old clock and very strong spring, then flushed coagulated blood with alcohol pumped through new heart for three days until ran without debris before adding serum and stimulating again. Little change. Was awake whole time, even held tools, so hard to tell if made any difference except now sounds like breathing constantly and much ticking from beneath shirt. Sometimes does not seem to hear, which may be why. Could not try on subject. Too much risk, too little evidence of success. Remember Patrick. Do not wish again. Attempted more direct experiment with brain, removed skull with bone saw and very sharp scalpel. Remember stories of self trepanation in university and chose more extreme. Removed all bone from above ears. Examined serum, now gel like substance where inserted. Had slight static charge. Steward began working jaw very hard when removed last bit of bone, believe would have screamed if still had lungs instead of artificial. Soaked brain, upright, in serum, as much as had left after dogs, then gave gentle stimulation, increasing with extra batteries until serum became gel, like new skull, around brain. Began to flop and flail, but otherwise, also failure. Very frustrated. Could hear muffled noise in basement and found subject loose from one strap and tugging at baffle. Ready to murder then. Replaced muffle instead and went up to make notes on progress but could not. To town to get drunk. Some conference in town. Seance and Science. Laughed, but at bar, unaccustomed to bar, met man who told me what to drink to get drunk, bought first, and second, after which cannot remember except shared buggy back to manor with me. Said was like me, a doctor, but of soul instead. When said there was no soul, laughed, and asked what made flesh move. Told him was electricity, serum, the formula thirty seven. Frogs. Said all true, but mere tools in service of soul, like steam in locomotive controlled by valves, but still need a controller. Would not accept brain. Not sure what compelled me. Very stupid when drunk. Thins the serum in our blood and makes very hard for brain to communicate with body let alone self. So, very stupid, took him to manor. Told him, could show him, didn’t know what he was talking about. Showed him… very stupid, did not even bring pistol. Showed him steward. Gel had run and brain was exposed but eyes still open and mouth still opening and closing. Should have run screaming but did not. Stayed, and asked questions. Showed him my serum, told him frogs, and dogs, and then, heard screaming. Showed him subject, told him was alive but would not stop screaming. Could not stop crying while in room. Took me outside and sat with me in air while I regained composure. Drink very bad. He said, soul still in her. Thought he looked at me with pity. Screaming because trapped between world she wishes to go to, and world she cannot return to, without help. Said ways for man to call living soul through folds to this world. Thought him mad at time. Should not have shown him what did, but helped me to couch where was habit to sleep. Cannot sleep in bed. Do not remember if more said, but whiskey very hard on head. Book on table when awoke. Old book, leather, vellum, not proper paper. Descriptions of bizarre rituals, incantations, but also medicine goes with them. Herbal remedies would have effect magic might not. In very back, found marker with note. A page on ritual of calling dead into a ring. Dead soul. Words to write on ground and words to speak. Authority, it said, is with the living to command all that is not. Should have thrown it away, but feeling very bad, left it on table. Buried steward later, told it to dig, showed it, sat on side of hole and thought while mouth moved and shovel dug. Wondered how moved without circulation, how see or hear with dirt directly on brain. Twitched when dirt fell there. Had to use rag to keep clean or wouldn’t keep digging. Finally, told to lie down and shoveled dirt over it. Twitched whole time. Regretted later. Returned to town. Tried to find man, but conference seemed over. Only remnant a man on soapbox near pharmacy shouting end times and absurdities. Have no more ideas. Will try, magic, in the morning. When light. Not at night. Seems madness.
