《Light Seekers》1.04 – Leve

I stuff the things that I own into my backpack. Money, mask, clothes, and anything else that will fit from the trunk. The scent of smoke in the air is undeniable but the actual smoke hasn’t made it here yet. Outside was once pitch black, being cut only by the dim street lights. Now it’s filled with bright reds and oranges. The quiet hum of the generators is gone, replaced by the wailing of people, the clashing of swords, sporadic gunfire and small explosions either caused by magic or bombs. They did all the talking of war and we were the victims. We were the ones to fall first.
Maybe it’s a good thing that I don’t have family because there’s nobody holding me back as I run through the streets, dodging fires and small clashes. I can’t breathe, I feel like the world is caving in on me. The familiar sensation of vomit comes and I’m forced to lean over in the streets. I don’t get much further, before I watch another skirmish. Two men using magic, neither very good. One throwing balls of fire, another throwing rocks and stones from the air. I start to dry heave, I want to puke again but there’s nothing left. I cut through an alley, trying to make my way to the abandoned building I practice in.
I lift the old debris out of the way and uncover the stairs to the basement. I climb down and tuck myself in a corner. Above I can still hear the sounds of chaos, they come closer before they fade and eventually there’s nothing. I’m sure the battle is over, I don’t know who won but I’m afraid to go check it out. I thought I was going to face sorcerers but here I am hiding from ordinary people.

“You down there,” I hear Levi’s voice, but I don’t answer. “Najar,” he keeps calling.
“What,” I climb up the stairs.
“I thought you might have died,” his face seems genuinely concerned.
“No, just, just a little shaken up.”
“Me too,” he sits down leaning against a wall before join him.
We discuss the madness that just happened and was finished in thirty minutes. I was outside trying to practice my magic when it all started, at first, I thought a generator had blown up after running for days without stop. Levi’s father led a small group of men. He’s expecting Levi to join him in the retaliation attack. He’s afraid, he doesn’t say it, but I can sense it. No, I can see it. Every so often a bit of light from the flames will flow in and I can see his pale face tinted orange. I’m afraid too, but not the same way he’s afraid. He’s afraid because he knows more fighting is what he’s supposed to do. His family can live well when the light shines, but in the darkness, they have to prove their worth. That means they have to fight to show they’re worthy to be one of the top families. Even if they aren’t the wealthiest or most powerful, they still have to fight for their position. I don’t have any of that on my shoulders. I simply have to fight for survival, maybe not even fight. I just have to make it to the mountain top. I’m more desperate than ever. I wish I could say it was to make sure nobody has to ever fight again, but I’m not that good. I just want to make sure that I never have to it come to my home again.

“Are you still going,” Levi turns to me.
“Where?”
“Up the mountain.”
There’s no hesitation in my answer. “I don’t think I have a choice anymore.”
“Can I come with you?”
“Why?”
“Because I can’t do this. I can’t kill anyone. I can barely use magic, I can’t even do it when someone is looking. I’ll die if I march with my father and his men.”
I know he’ll slow me down, but right now, it’ll be better to move as a group. “We have to leave soon.”
“I can get us some supplies. When do you want to go?”
“As soon as possible, I’m already packed.”
“I know some merchants, they were supposed to go to another town. Maybe we can catch a ride with them.”
“I’ll think about it. Just make sure you get ready.”
I watch him scurry out of the building, motivated to leave finally. I told him to get ready, but I’m not ready. I don’t have a plan. I’ve got a mask, and some cheap throwing knives I bought. I can’t even throw the knives because I get sick every time I use magic. I just don’t want to die. I don’t care if it’s starvation, marching into war or getting eaten by something out there in the wild. I don’t want to die, I have to make it to that mountain. I have to bring back the light. I have to make the sun rise. I just wish I wasn’t so afraid.

The Humble Life of a Skill Trainer
For Joshua Still, Skills were the lifeblood of his business. He wanted to understand them, collect many of them, and teach a few of them. Which was a problem because while his profession of a Skill Trainer was perfectly legal, it was frowned upon by most of the kingdom. After all, it wouldn't do for a non-tailor to teach Tailoring. Or, so says the Tailors Guild. The same could be said by the Blacksmiths, the Bakers, the Butchers, the Candlestick Makers, the Mages, and every other Guild with enough money and clout to complain. But still, Skill Trainers provide a valuable service, and so he has managed to start his business and keep it under the table. To a degree. With many a bribe. But his quiet anonymous life of research, practice, and training was about to change. When the Baron demands you pay him a visit, you have little choice.

2332: Fleeing the Arrakis
What if you can build a town that moves faster than the speed of light? Silas Creedy, a retired Olympic Fencer in his late twenties, has befallen hard times in a crashing economy caused by dwindling rare minerals on Earth and Helium-3 on the lunar surface. He works as a manual laborer for the Space Force, accepting a measly pay while maintaining a strong physique. On Monday morning, Silas receives a notice of termination, but General Grant Freeman makes a dangerous offer: explore a distant star system in a top-secret electrogravitic spaceship while wearing a prototype exosuit that augments reality into a role-playing game. The objectives? Locate a source of Helium-3. Plain and uncomplicated. Silas accepts, but on an Earth-like planet he comes across a seemingly unmanned crashed spaceship that has a remarkably similar aesthetic to his exosuit. As local Fauna attack him, the crashed ship’s AI hijacks his suit’s programming, fends off the the locals, and repairs itself by fusing with Silas’ ship. Silas soon finds himself in the midst of a war between two Kardashev type-3 civilizations vying for dominance over the Milky Way. With his new AI companion, Tracey, Silas decides to go on the run to keep Earth’s location secret. Contains profanity, gore, transhumanism, and eventual real-world LitRPG character stats and spaceship-building mechanics.

Chronicles of Xod (returning from hiatus)
After a long recovery over a chronic motion sickness issue, I feel I'm ready to return to writing this book. It might be slow at first, but I'm hoping to pick up where I left off. I apologize again for the long hiatus. The pages following are a true account. An account of how I, Josh--a teenage nerd from modern suburbia--ended up in a strange world filled with fantastic magic, bizarre creatures, and terrifying dungeons. Despite the troped-up fantasy feel of the world, this is hardly an ordinary tale. For one, don’t expect a happy ending. With the trials I’ve been through, the horrors I’ve seen and the atrocities I’ve committed, believe me when I tell you, this is not a happy tale filled with friendly rainbow bears or teenage flying unicorns. It’s more likely you’ll finish this book mentally scarred as I will not spare the details of my unfortunate adventures. With the help of my trusted companion Gui, I gain an insight that no one else in the world has. This knowledge allows me to exploit and, for lack of a better term, metagame the system which gave me a clear advantage over its residents. “With great power...,” someone might begin to quote to me. In my defense, I think maybe even you, reader, might have acted similarly with how this reality changed my view of good and evil. This story will be updated regularly on Wednesdays around 6 PM. There will only be about 1000 words per update. The focus is to finish the story before doing any major changes or editing. Please read as if this is a work in progress, not a finished product. Feel free to let me know if you see any error, whether glaring or minor. If you help me out, I'll be sure to add you to a thank you list at the front of the book when it is published. Chronicles of Xod is a first-person fantasy novel that follows the adventures of a young man from Earth. Through unknown circumstances, he finds himself in a fantasy world where life is not all wonders and happy endings. The story takes common fantasy concepts from my favorite video games, books and movies and gives them an adult edge. It also introduces some taboo concepts often glossed over by stories written for broad audiences. The style is meant to be immersive and heavily detailed. The short novel will be written in a way that attempts to bring a sense of realism to an unrealistic genre. Where there are realistic consequences and dangers in a world populated with violent monsters, cruel demons, bloodthirsty undead, and immoral bandits. In this fantasy world, the inhabitants are essentially gender blind as far as sexuality is concerned. There is also more variation amongst male and female physiology. This isn't meant to be any kind of promotion or demotion of social behavior in reality. Just a concept I thought would be an interesting idea to have in a fantasy setting. I highly discourage anyone from reading this material if you are personally concerned with being offended or traumatized. Both violent and sexual content will be graphically detailed. All characters involved in sexual scenes are mature and of the age of consent(18+).
