After the little stunt, I pulled earlier the air here had become denser between us. Ignoring the atmosphere, we had our meeting and Bruno explained why we had been gathered here.

Basically, the culprit who had stolen the relic had escaped from the Capital. According to some information broker from god knows where, said that a group of soldiers was going to meet with the culprits tonight who had helped them escape. They were offered to be handsomely. The bandits had already escaped the Capital and had infiltrated the southern region. Tonight was the transaction between the corrupt soldiers and the bandits in the back alley near the clock tower at 2 am.

Right now we were sitting quietly on the roof of the designated meeting place. We had laid down an ambush as we hid on the roof stealthily on the buildings besides. There was still 10 minutes left before the meeting time and no one had yet arrived as of yet.

The moonlight was the only thing that lit the back alley, unlike the normal streets which were lit by lamps. We were waiting on the roof for about an hour and no soul had appeared of yet.

My ass has been freezing now and I am really sleepy with all this waiting. Again, the meeting place was again in a back alley. I mean come on! Why was the back alley always the place to misuse? It’s like a paradise for all bullies and crooks alike. This was the only place where laws don’t apply. Why was there such a place in the first place? It shouldn’t be called back alley, instead hooligan’s hangout or something like that.

We were split into two teams. Thalia and William in one team whereas me and Bruno in the other.

They were hiding on the roof of the building which was opposite to ours so if the bandits gather, we could attack at the same time. Although this was an outrageous plan which depended on a frontal attack which I find a bit troublesome. What if they were armed with dangerous high-class equipment, not to mention that what if they used that unstable new category weapon.

But for this attack, Bruno had given us some Auxiliary Pills to each of us. These are pretty handy!

Auxiliary pills could also be called as a substitute for enchanted equipment.

A country can’t be protected by a handful of soldiers possessing enchanted equipment alone. That country would soon succumb to its downfall. Hence there was an army of soldiers who were equipped with normal weapons and armor. It's not like they can mass produce enchanted gears and arm every soldier in their army.

So hence the Liberated Association of Alchemist had developed special pills. These certain pills if intaken by people will get a serious boost in their physical and spiritual aptitudes. It was said that it can increase a person's abilities to a 10 fold than normally. It also said that some high-class pills which also allowed normal human beings to use magic like mages. Although these perks were to last for a short duration. There were also backlashes of using the pills. The powerful the pills, the worse the backlashes.

Hence the army was only armed with strengthening pills. It increased their strength and speed to fourfold. The only backlashes were fatigue which they can recover after some rest and food. The ingredients for the pills weren’t costly but the pills were restricted only to be sold within the military. Selling or using these pills outside the military was strictly forbidden.

Now we were given 4 pills each. I never imagined I would able to utilize these pills before I could become a full-fledged soldier. Talk about perks for being befriending nobles.

“Oi Bruno!”, I called out and asked, “Why are we doing this?”

We both were laying down on the dusty roof as we waited for the people to arrive.

“Hush! Keep your voice down.”, he said agitatedly, “What do you mean by 'Why'? We are doing this as a duty as a fellow guardsman!”

What the heck was he talking about?

Today we searched for a lost pet, fixed a vegetable stall’s roof and chased some kids who were soiling the wall with their pee.

Isn’t that duty enough for the likes of us guardsmen duty?

Now suddenly we're doing some serious shit and it's just my first day on duty.

Wasn’t this the elite squads duty to handle such stuff?

“What I mean is that, why are we alone doing this? Why can’t you just inform the military officials and they would handle the rest.”, I commented.

Why were we risking our lives to go so far?

Bruno had disappointed expression on his face as I asked this question.

What’s with that expression!

“The higher up’s in the military are also are involved in this. Even if we did tell the military, they would most likely just change the whole meeting time and venue and they would never ever apprehend these bandits.”, he said.

Wow! Never thought that this goofy face noble brat would be useful other than ordering those monkeys (Bruno and Thalia) around. He had some good brains that seemed to be functioning pretty well than I expected.

“Supposedly the military was to subjugate these bandits. We won’t be able to get the information about the Cultist. Once they are captured, the royal family would surely intervene and suppress this sensitive information.”

I see. Those royal jerks would surely apprehend these bandits. This was getting more and more complicated.

But our wait was soon over and we saw three soldier's approaching the designated place.
