《How I Slayed A Dragon》Chapter 39

(Sep 16)
This motherfucker…
He just attempted to kill my wife by throwing a magic infused needle while I was choking him.
Trying to kill me is one thing but trying to harm my family is unforgivable.
I was pissed.
My body started heating up as I tried to suppress my anger.
Even though I was aware and prepared for the fact that the assassins were after our lives, it still made me extremely mad.
Thankfully, dragonification didn’t happen even when I was so mad, but I still need to be carefully from now on with my emotions.
In my anger, my grip around the assassin’s neck tightened and I even heard a crack which I assumed was one of his bones breaking.
I smashed the assassin’s head against the wall of my house and the wall itself exploded from the impact creating a massive hole in the wall. Half of the assassin’s body was sticking out of the hole while the lower half of his body was inside.
The assassin died instantly, his neck was destroyed, and his skull was in pieces.
Our goal was to capture at least one of the three assassins alive so we could interrogate them, and because of that it didn’t matter if the other two died but even so, this… was my first time killing another humanoid being…
I killed many monsters before, but this was my first time killing another intelligent being.
I killed him in my rage.
I didn’t have time to feel guilty at that moment but now I feel sort of sick in the stomach…
I ended a life, and I didn’t even feel anything until now, what does that say about me? What if that person had his own family, just like mine… a wife? A kid? What if they’re waiting for his return…?
I don’t want to think about this anymore.
What’s done is done.
I can regret it all I want but if this continues, I will probably have to do it again, kill another person that is.

After I had killed the first assassin by smashing him through my house wall, the noise notified the other two assassin who were nearby my house on standby.
One of them immediately jumped up to check out what was going on.
I pulled the body of the dead assassin that was stuck in the wall back inside of my house and place it on the ground to hide it.
The second assassin that was checking out the situation was cautious; she knew that something was up.
The third assassin that was also nearby jumped on top of my house and tried to sense for anything, but I was already hidden and concealing my presence, he wasn’t able to sense anything.
All while this was happening, I was speaking to Sven via his telepathy, and they started to make their move.
This was the situation, I was inside of my house with my sleeping family with a dead assassin while the other two assassins were outside, unaware of what had happened and very cautious.
Sven and Mona were sneakily and stealthily approaching them from behind.
Things were going according to plan (sort of).
The assassins were hesitant, and they slowly looked inside while the female assassin entered my house and the other was standing by the door watching for any movements. They seemed quite nervous, but they couldn’t just run away without knowing what happened and completing their goal of killing me.
As this was happening, Sven used one of his illusion abilities called “null senses” which debuffs another person’s senses. It lowers the target’s eyesight, hearing, smell, ability to sense magic and etc.
And with that set up, I was to make as much noise and to get them to focus their attention on me so that they wouldn’t notice Mona and Sven approach from behind.
Suddenly, I released all of my dragon essence at once and shouted out attracting both of the assassin’s attention onto me while jumping out of my hiding spot.

Both assassins pulled out their weapons, one of them pulled out a katana and the other pulled out… a gun?
One of the assassins dead ass, pulled out a gun and shot it at me but the bullets only grazed me as I quickly jumped into a room and hid there.
Guns are a new type of weapons that compresses magic into a metal bullet and by combining gunpowder and magic, the explosive force can pierce even tough metal.
The downside is bullets are very hard to make and the explosive force is strong enough to make a gun break apart so it’s still in early state development. Plus, they are very expensive so why the flip do they have one?!?!
The gunshots stopped so they must’ve run out of bullets or something.
I peeked out and the moment I did, a katana slashed downwards right in front of my face, cutting a small piece of my hair off.
His attack missed my head by a few centimeters, and my head might’ve been rolling on the ground right now if I was little bit slower but I reacted instantly and grabbed the katana with my dragon claws.
The female assassin holding the katana tried to pull back her katana but my grip on the blade was strong and I smashed the katana into pieces with my grip. Using my other hand, I punched her and sent her flying backwards crashing into a table.
At this point, the other assassin tried running away but before he could even leave my house, Mona appeared at the entrance blocking the assassin’s attempt to flee.
The female assassin that I had sent flying, stood back up. Injured but still able to move and she threw a smoke bomb and attempted to run.
But I could see through the smoke with my dragon eyes, so I rushed in and tackled her onto the ground while she flailed around trying to escape.
I didn’t know how to knock her out without killing her though, I was afraid if I tried choking her, I might snap her neck... In a lot of books I read, super strong martial master would knock someone unconscious by hitting their necks or something, but I had no idea how to do that.
Sven quickly came to my aid though and casted a magic spell onto her making her fall asleep.
I released her, plopped her unconscious body onto the ground and took a deep breath before standing back up.
When I looked over, Mona had already subdued the other assassin who tried to escape.
I rushed back into my room and confirmed my wife was fine and just sleeping, ran into Gabi’s room and also confirmed Gabi was completely fine.
That’s when I realized that it was finally over, and my family was now safe.
Even though I didn’t use a lot of magic, this night was very mentally exhausting.
I met up with Sven and Mona outside of my house, where they tied up the two surviving assassins.
When Mona saw me, she said:
“Hey. Good job Anthony, you did us a good service tonight. You are as skilled as I expected and as strong as I had imagined.”
Wow, based on our last interaction, I had expected her to say that I was better than she had expected. If I was as useful and skilled as she expected, her expectation of me must be pretty high then.
“Of course I have high expectations of you. Briggs himself had personally trained you after all, if you were any weaker than this, than we wouldn’t be having this conversation right now. You did not fail to meet, nor did you exceed my expectations.”
I guessed she did have a point.
And like that, the assassination attempt on my life had failed and I had successfully captured 2 assassins/ spies.

Disclaimers: Chapter Frequency: I aim for one chapter a week. Chapter Length: I try to keep chapters between 3000 and 6000 words. Binge Preference: I plan for 30 chapters per arc. If you want to binge a complete arc, then that is the number to wait for. I will also add a line to chapters indicating the beginning and end of an arc. Advanced Access: I have created a patreon page with early access to four chapters for patrons. What to Expect: Progression fantasy with a western fantasy setting and with eastern fantasy elements. A main character that is forced to explore a very narrow path of magic due to a permanent condition. A main character that is a part of a larger cast. A main character that is growing but won't become the strongest around anytime soon. A story following a single main character but with introduction or theme setting scenes without the main character. What Not to Expect: Edgy grimdark characters – I will never write a sexual violence scene or gory descriptions of torture. I hate reading it and I would hate writing it even more. Romance – romantic relationships will never be the focus of the story and only appear in the background. The main character is preoccupied with other stuff. Other forms of relationships (family, friends, companions) play a bigger role. Cover: The cover art was commisioned from redditor Linh-Nguyen87. The font is alita brush by Inovatype Typefoundry.
