《System Tournament》12: David 3

It is the time now.
After yesterday’s order, Louis’ group has been at work nonstop. I even had to intervene to make them rest a bit after I heard from others how weird sounds came from their “workshop”.
Paul and Bill wanted to go hunt again this morning, but since we didn’t know what this class thing would do to us, I asked them to lay low until we observed its effects. Even with John always telling me how Classes couldn’t possibly be bad since in games it was one of the most important thing you could find.
It is now my round and also around the same time when the System came seven days ago.
Congratulations! You survived the first 7 days! Due to your enormous achievements, you will be able to choose between 3 Classes. Choose wisely, you won’t be able to change it.
Available Classes:
Tyrant Planner Adaptable Leader
“Seriously?! Tyrant? Have I been ordering people so much that I can be considered one?” I exclaim out loud, startling Lea out of her Class inspection.
“Really? You got proposed a Tyrant Class? And no Leader one in honour of the title we gave you?” Lea smirks to her own remark.
“Actually, yes, I got one: Adaptable Leader. I was just really pissed off by such a choice. Really against all we yearn for. I also got the Planner Class, but I’m not that much of a planner?”
“Then what are you waiting for?! Just take the Class, leader!”
Congratulations! Thanks to your accomplishment, you have been awarded the Adaptable Leader class.
You will now gain +2 Control, +1 Perception and +1 Endurance per level.
“Four stats per level, that can be good, I guess? Oh, so what do you have, Lea?”
“I had Sniper, Sentinel and Eagle-Eyed Assistant. I took the Sentinel one, which is giving me 2 Perception and 1 Endurance per level. So I guess your class is nice.” She answers thoughtfully.

“Oh, so you already chose it? You didn’t ask your Leader his opinion.” I say, emphasizing and cringing on the leader part.
Laughing, Lea peel her eyes off the window’s scenery to turn to me.
“Yes, I thought getting the Sentinel class was the most obvious choice. Sniper would require us to somehow get our hand on a gun, which we don’t have and might be really hard to get depending on the situation we are in. We might even be in another realm with no guns for all we know, that wouldn’t be strange considering all that happened.”
She walks towards the small table and sits on it, fiddling around with a pen.
“The Eagle-Eyed Assistant would just make me your second, and might really bring down my potential. And also, with Sentinel, I was convinced I would be able to stay up longer for watch time.”
“And with the endurance point, you might not have been wrong.”
“That, and the skill it gave me too, Sentinel’s Constitution. Helps me concentrating and staying alert even in dire cases.” She adds to my statement, now letting go of the pen and walking back to the window to continue watching outside, with still nothing happening.
“Wait! You got a skill?!”
To my clear surprise she turns to me. “You didn’t? Then I guess your point comes from there?”
“Maybe…”
…
Our watch turn finished, with nothing happening yet again, I head for Paul and Bill for them to fill me in on their classes to know what we shall do after this.
I also asked John to go around the rest of the dormitory to ask for everyone’s new classes. John himself got the War Mage one, apparently driven by his magic love and gaming habits. He apparently got a Skill using mana- so he calls it a spell- called Mage Punch. It’s apparently just a punch enhanced by the mana used.

At least, it’s not something unusable, but getting a fighting class didn’t look that stunning, really. We just survive off hunting and the wolves around us aren’t particularly aggressive, so I think it’s not optimal.
Anyway, to each their own, I didn’t choose the Tyrant class for a reason and John is free to do as he pleases the moment he doesn’t endanger us.
While absorbed in such thoughts, I reached my destination, the hunter aficionado “turf”.
At first I went for Bill’s room, since that’s where him and Paul hung out a lot, but when reaching there his neighbours told me they didn’t see them come back, so I guessed they were still here, maybe still talking about the fauna of the forest or something.
From the door, I hear laughing and cheers. Seems like the “strategic meeting” is already done. Knocking on the door, I hear the cheers stopping and shuffling behind.
The door opens to Louis’ face. “Hey leader! You here for the Classes meeting?”
“Cleverly deducted, Louis. And now you are not wrong to call me leader, since that’s my class.” I dryly laugh.
“Oho! Nice then! Come on in, come one in!” He beckons me.
Entering the room, I see the group sitting in a circle on the ground, a glass in their hands and some bottles of diverse alcohols in the center of the circle.
Noticing Paul, I address him. “So you decided to celebrate the occasion with your “well hidden” bottles?”
“Yes indeed! We got quite the nice choices here. Wait! You knew about them?”
“Sure I did! How would I not after living 2 years in the same room as you? Anyway, I’m here for a bit of business before handling the new division for our merry group… So what do you have?”
“Come sit and drink a glass first!” Paul invites me. Accepting, I sat next to him. “So now I am a Robust Fighter with 2 Strength, 1 Constitution and 1 Endurance per level.”
“So you’ll be one of our strongest asset and will really help us if there are dangers, huh… And what about you, Bill?”
“I’m a Hunter which gives me 2 Agility and 1 Perception. It also gave me the Track Beast skill, which is one of the reasons we are celebrating. I'll be able to hunt even more proficiently.” Answers Bill, a bit tipsy.
“As for myself, I’ve got the Trapper class, basically making me able to fill in on a hunter position and skinning at the same time. It gives 1 Perception and 1 Concentration.” Louis continues.
After Louis, the 5 other guys in the group fills me in on their classes and I finish my drink before going back to my room.
John should be finished with his info gathering and work now awaits me.

Usually to die or kill for others in strange and exciting places, but it's never certain what the next one will bring. It has its perks. With each new world comes a new story with new experiences and new lessons. There is always more to see, more to learn and more to know. Maybe, someday, it will all make sense. For now he will just work hard to become stronger, to be useful and, hopefully, survive that way. A coming-of-age story, but different. Things start to slow down to a crawl. Colors blur into one another until my vision is completely white. All I can think is "Shit, not this again!" I hate being summoned. _________________________________ updates once a week until I get more time The idea for this story began in two places. One was the ridiculously rapid pace of gaining power in many novels. Both in games and in novels, I enjoy the struggle of the beginning character, why always the rush? The other was the way many monster or non-human MCs always seem to hurry to become human (again). It always felt like a cheap way to grant the character extra powers without the difficulty of writing a non-standard thought process. Thus I wanted to write the slow(ish) progression of a monster character gaining strength and intelligence, while remaining distinctly non-human. There are no stats, xp or systems, no reincarnated soul or completely formed being to start with - unless I want to make fun of those. While the MC 'evolves', the process takes months if not years to proceed step by little step. Sit down with me and imagine, what would it be like if...

Heart of the Dungeon
A lazy, wingless, blabbermouth of an imp, smearing goat’s blood all over the crystal – that is the unpleasant view this new Heart wakes up to. “I’m your Prime!” the imp says. The Heart reluctantly agrees. In an unknown world, filled with dangers, it needs every help it can get – even if said help is not…optimal. The Heart tries its best to succeed, even after being tricked by shrewd traders and having less than useful minions. Rival races settle in the Dungeon, causing even more headaches. The heroes, as they call themselves, sets their aim on the ‘new and defenseless’ Dungeon. The heroes are always lurking in the shadows – well actually, they are standing in the open, under the sun, hiding nothing – but either way, their evil intentions, no matter how they claim to justify them, only cause needless death. “Am I really that precious? Must you hunt me so fiercely? Why are you doing this to me?” The Heart does not understand their motives. Perhaps its lack of understanding has something to do with the fact the Heart has no physical limits nor material needs. Why take it from someone, when you can simply will it forth? Just pay for it with mana rent! To make things worse, the real dangers are not from above, nor from below, but from within…
