《The Crawford's Multiverse of Madness》Chapter 27 - The Broken Gift

"I hope these are useful later on," Zeel said as he finished burying some cubes at different locations throughout the desert.
He refrained from telling Alice the purpose of the cubes and would always build them in secret.
"I wonder how she is doing right now? A feisty fella that girl. Probably complaining about training again. Well, I should be heading back," Zeel murmured.
Zeel jumped on his motorbike, which seemed a little too pimped out for what the apocalypse had to offer.
Zeel had made two motorbikes for himself and Alice, these bikes were meant to be the pinnacle of what he could build given the lack of proper materials.
Of course, like all his other inventions, the main function of the motorbike was to go 'BOOM'.
Zeel began riding in the direction of Alice, he could feel her presence to pinpoint accuracy now. The integration with the nanites had improved their tracking function.

In a secret Umbrella Facility, a group meeting was taking place.
Issacs walked into the Facility for the first time in a while.
"How good of the science division to join us," Chairman Wesker said with sarcasm lacing his voice, clearly he was not hiding his mocking actions.
"Chairman Wesker. I've been busy," Isaac replied humbly, but everyone in the room was aware of the madman that bubbled just below the surface.
Before Isaacs entered the room, the group had been discussing matters of Biohazards, so Wesker asked "On the subject of the biohazard, what is the science division's report?"
"Well, we now know conclusively that they have no real need for sustenance. They hunger for flesh but do not require it. My research indicates they could remain active for decades," Isaacs said as he began to summarize his findings on the so-called 'Zombies'.
"We're to be trapped underground for decades?" The other chairmen asked creating a ruckus, though they lived in comfort unlike any other, they still craved the surface as this was an innate need of all humans.

"What news of Project Alice?" Wesker asked, ignoring the outbursts of those near him.
"Using antibodies from her blood. I will develop a serum that will not just combat the effects of the T-virus but potentially reverse it, giving back these creatures a measure of their intelligence...their memories, thus curbing their hunger for flesh," Isaac said feeling proud of his research's discovery.
"You're confident you can domesticate them?" asked Wesker, while playing with the black gloves on his hands.
"They're animals, essentially. We can train them if we can take away their baser instincts. They'll never be human but would provide the basis for a docile workforce. We can return to the surface," Isaacs said with absolute confidence in his idea, though if one were to listen carefully enough, they could notice the slight shake in his voice.
"After months of experiments, you have nothing to show. We are left to rot underground," A chairman said in exasperation, earning a glare from Isaacs.
"Without the original Project Alice, progress has been difficult. I've been forced to replicate her using cloned genetic models. It's laborious. The results, unpredictable," Isaacs explained with great justification.
It would take a researcher to understand another researcher since they are familiar with the difficulties of replicating a successful case consecutively.
"Project Alice and the subject of domestication is of the highest priority. You will concentrate on this to the exclusion of all other research. We expect an updated report in a week," Wesker commanded as his tone carried a bit of disappointment in Isaacs.
"Simply demanding results will not guarantee them," Isaac made a snide comment that did not go unnoticed by Wesker.
"Then perhaps we should place someone else in charge. Someone who can give us the reassurances we require," Wesker replied curtly since it was a major no-no to disrespect the boss, especially in such a public setting.

It was midnight, Alice laid at a random location in the desert.
The ground began vibrating as if an earthquake was about to happen. This was no earthquake. This was Alice having another nightmare, every night she dreamt about dying over and over again in her nightmares.
Each time the feeling was so real, almost like an experience she was undergoing, and after each death, she felt a bit stronger.
Zeel, who was a couple of kilometers away, sensed the instability of Alice's emotions and decided to travel a bit through the night.
The last thing he needed was an unstable Alice, with her telekinesis ability growing ever stronger, she was now on par with him in combat ability.
Maybe, with a burst of enough emotion, she could severely injure Zeel.
Alice woke up feeling groggy, only to notice everything around her floating at least a meter off the ground. This included her prized motorbike gifted to her by Zeel.
After noticing this, tried to use her powers to bring it down gently but she could barely muster up the required energy.
This led to everything falling as huge boulders, rocks, rubble, and her precious motorbike, all collided together.
A deafening rumble could be heard for miles on end.
"Ah fuck!" Alice complained, knowing Zeel would chastise her about her ungrateful nature as a way to make fun of her.
"That was a gift," Alice said dejectedly.
At an Umbrella Facility near the Outskirts of the Sahara Desert, Isaacs was lying lazily on a couch drinking water.
"Sir, I have detected a massive surge on alpha and beta particles collecting at a location in the desert that is hard to pinpoint," The White Queen reported to Isaacs.
The White Queen was the sister A.I. of The Red Queen, but she was far less useful.
"Is it from on the compound?" Isaacs replied with a lazy look and raised eyebrows.
"No Sir!" The White Queen replied.
"Begin replication of voice module for the chain of higher-ups. I doubt I will get permission for this next excursion. Might as well not ask," Isaac commanded The White Queen as he began plotting how he should investigate this anomaly.
The next morning, Alice began walking toward the outskirts of the satellite zone in wait for the approaching Zeel.
After about two hours of walking, she had to keep her ever-growing excitement in check.
Zeel and Alice had never been apart in nearly two years, so Alice had become accustomed to Zeel's presence all the time.
It had been almost two weeks since they last saw each other, and as a woman, she had a lot of pent up emotions that needed encouragement to be released.
Sex with Zeel was the most euphoric feeling in the world, so much so that Alice had grown slightly addicted.
Everything about Zeel appealed to Alice, and she indulged in the sensations they would experience together.
While waiting, Alice then began to hear the sounds of combat coming from a couple of miles in the opposite direction.
With her keen intuition, she could easily judge that something was wrong. Unable to fight the urge, Alice turned around and began running in the opposite direction of Zeel.
Zeel noticed Alice's sudden change of direction, and bolted in her direction, leaving his prized motorbike behind.
Ironically, Zeel was faster running than his motorbike could drive.

Wildling
Blurb: Silas--a scavenger living off the ruins of humanity--has spent his entire life fighting tooth and nail to provide for himself and his crew. But when a scavenging run goes awry and he's snatched up by an android patrol, he finds himself thrown into a cage and priced to sell as a pet. And when a suitor comes calling, he fears the worst: that he'll be turned into a Domestic, a human lapdog brainwashed into total obedience. Instead, he discovers an equally disturbing truth: that the creatures who stole his world have created a videogame the likes of which Earth has never seen; a sprawling, game-like theme park where humans are the Avatars and androids are the players who control them. And to make matters worse, his android guide is as hopeless as they come, having gotten all of her previous Avatars killed in record time. So if Silas wants to regain his freedom, he'll not only have to fight his way through a world that was specifically designed to murder him in brutal fashion--he'll also have to convince his android guide that he should be the one calling the shots. FAQS: Q: Who are you, handsome stranger? A: I'm Kyle Kirrin, the author of Shadeslinger, book 1 of The Ripple System, published by Portal Books, and I write crunchy LitRPG. Q: What is Wildling? And is it complete? A: Wildling is a crunchy LitRPG mash up of Fantasy and Science Fiction. And yup, Wildling is already complete at 64 chapters, or about 120,000 thousand words. You're looking at something like a third draft here--it's fairly polished, but it hasn't been picked over by a copy editor yet nor has my developmental editor seen it. Q: Upload schedule? A: 5 initial chapters today (2/15/2021) and one chapter a day for the next month. After that I'll probably slow down to 2 or 3 chapters a week until the story is complete. Q: How crunchy is it? A: It's pretty crunchy. I'd put it on the same tier as Ascend/The Land/RSSG, but it might be a bit crunchier than those three? Q: Is this the first book in a series or a web novel or what? And what are your plans for it? A: It's currently a standalone with series potential. Full disclosure: this story may head the way of my publisher eventually, but will be available on RR for quite a while no matter what. Likely several months after it's complete with plenty of warning before/if it's taken down. Q: What kind of build does the MC create? A: Sword and board! Q: Crafting? A: Plenty! Crafting isn't as center stage as it is in The Way of the Shaman, but it's close. Q: Base building? A: Two fully separate, distinct bases, both of which play a major role in the story. Q: VRMMO? Portal? Reincarnation or what? A: This one's a bit tricky. Basically an advanced race has created a game-like world that closely resembles a theme park. Think Westworld but with copious amounts of loot. And the MC has to fight his way through that to earn his freedom. Q: Permadeath? A: Nope! The MC gets 3 lives to play through the entirety of the game world, and death is extremely punishing, but not fatal. Q: Harem? Or romance? A: No and no. Q: Cursing? Blood? A: Quite a bit of cursing, yeah. There's blood, too, but it's not a gory book by any means. Q: How can I support? A: Instead of a Patreon/donations etc, I'd ask that you consider giving my debut LitRPG Shadeslinger a chance. It's free on Kindle Unlimited and the audio is already out narrated by Travis Baldree. It's an epic fantasy VRMMO where the main character gets 3 days of exclusive access to a new game plus a snarky, talking axe to guide him through it in exchange for agreeing to become the target of a serverwide manhunt once the Head Start period ends. Q: How's it similar to Wildling? And how's it different? A. The crunch level is very similar, but Shadeslinger is a much lighter, epic fantasy take on the genre. It's also VRMMO, but without any real world components aside from the first chapter. The MC is very different--he comes off as a bit of a jerk early on and can take a bit to warm up to, especially before his backstory is revealed--but he's also got a talking axe that constantly puts him in his place. Shadeslinger's a much more humorous story in general, and it's a great deal more polished as well. Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy Wildling!

But instead of safety, every step brings them closer to danger: sky pirates, cannibals, and a relentless soulless scourge unleashed by their enemy are all intent on killing Lian—or worse. Death, Aralt realizes, might be the greater mercy. ---------------------------------------------------------- What to Expect: Character-driven Plot Novel Pacing (which I accept isn't typical for serials) Elaborate Worldbuilding (you gotta pay attention) Soul-bonded Swords Sentient Wolves Longish Chapters What Not to Expect: Litrpg (sorry!) Harem (not sorry!) Magic System Short Chapters Dancing Bears (at least so far) Seriously, this is a second-world low fantasy/science-fantasy featuring a strong, but flawed male protagonist, a cheeky teenage boy that’s driving him crazy, a wee bit o’ Scots flavor, and a whole lot of culture clashing. I’m preparing to relaunch this story on Kindle once the second and third books are ready and I’d love some feedback as I move through those revisions. I'm serious about the feedback. All comments are welcome. I'll name a characters after you. And kill them, if you want. :) Oh, did I mention soulless assassins and cannibals? Yeah, Aralt’s day is not getting any better. cover image by brosedesignz
