Chapter 6 Trouble
"Well, we aren't complete yet, but there is no time. So what's the situation?"
Sitting inside of the conference room located in the headquarters of Emperor’s Rule in the outer district, Dan looked across the faces of the 9 men sitting around him. His voice slightly vibrated through the completely silent room.
After a short moment of silence , a man, 40 years old with dirty blonde hair color stood up. His face filled seriousness and determination. At the last meeting some weeks ago he had been joking around together with the others, but now nothing was left of the jocking and carefree person, instead he moved and talked in perfect discipline, seeming just like a military officer reporting to his superior.
"May I speak Sir?"
He actually made a slight bow to Dan before standing by, waiting for approval from him.
"You may speak Rean."
Dan didn't seem uncomfortable with the sudden change in attitude that had occurred within his closest aides. Different situations called for different approaches. Before they could act carelessly having no one to fear in the city, but now that they were in serious danger this carefree live couldn't be kept up without risking their complete annihilation.
Their enemy was strong, strong enough to completely destroy them at the smallest mistake, so instead of being all smooth and relaxed with each other they now had to clearly draw the line. They were all friends knowing each other for a long time, but right now they were at war. Friendly gestures could wait till the enemy was destroyed.
After being approved by Dan, the young man called Rean first made a slight bow before continuing.
"Da-, ah.. Sir, the causalities and wounded have been counted.
There are six deaths, three completely disabled missing at least one leg or arm, five men are heavily injured but will be able to once again fight in a few months. 20 men are lightly injured and only need a month at most, while 32 men will be back in peak condition after a week of rest.
In total there are 9 men permanently unable to fight, 25 men that will have to recover for more than a month and 32 men that are available in a week again."
Despite the small mistake at the beginning caused by the newness of the whole 'military' like order, Rean managed to cleanly get over the numbers.
"Any problems with the wounded? Do we have any lack in antibiotics or medical supplies?"
Without even blinking an eye about the death and injured count Dan calmly asked.
"We have enough antibiotics and other medical supplies to patch up three times the men we do right now, so there is no immediate need in them, but what are we going to do with the permanently disabled as well as the death?
They both have families that were depending on them and now they are dead…."
"The families of the causalities will get a support from our side, after all their man died for our cause. As for the disabled, give them a job they can easily do in their state and increase their loan.
We cannot let the men that suffered for our faction face any lack of food or money, can we?"
Rean once again slightly bowed as he noted the things Dan said down.
"Anything else concerning the wounded?"
Dan looked over to Rean and as he saw that the latter shook his head and sat down.

His gaze traveled across his loyal followers. They all knew each other for years, already before Dan had even just founded the faction a year ago. Of all people they were the ones Dan trusted in the most and also the ones that he found to be the most cable.
But now it was the time to test it out. After all there is the saying: A man's true face only reveals in desperate times.
How capable, how loyal and how much of friends they were, all of this would show itself in the times that were to come now.
"This fight… it was too even. Despite us unexpectedly blowing up the whole street that time they have only lost about 30-40 men of whom I have killed 10. This means that if not for the unexpected explosions that killed at least 5 to 10 people and me who has killed 10 more, our side and their side is about evenly matched.
This is bad. Really, fucking, God damn bad!"
Calmly Dan strongly looked into the other men's eyes.
"You know this fight is different from anything we have fought before."
The others nodded.
They were used to fight other factions, to kill and get killed, but this was not comparable to fighting with someone that was supposedly as strong as their boss, a monster cable of killing half of their experts on his own.
Dan continued.
"But there is one thing you don't know.
This fucking son of a bastard and a bitch, ….
he is actually stronger than me."
Shock and disbelief.
"This is impossible!"
"If this is true.…"
"… then we are done for!"
Multiple of the men couldn't help but exclaim. Rean who was sitting on the right side, next to Dan could only stare is shock as he said.
"He just has to come here and we are all d-
"He won't come!"
Dan intercepted reassuring.
"He won't dare to come!"
The whole room turned silent.
"He might be stronger than me, being a soul stage expert, but he obviously hasn't advanced for to long and isn't completly stable in his position. He may be more powerful then me, but if counting in my initial skill the difference is not by a huge margin. In a real fight as long as I give my all I can still at least cripple him. This kind of person…. he won't risk it.
Because of this, he won't dare to come here!"
The room fell into silence as the men comprehended the words Dan said.
In this world, other then death the thing experts feared most was to be crippled. After all once crippled you could never regain your former peak strengh and in worst cases, you would become useless for the rest of your life.
There was no magical medicine that could regrow your limps in this world, the only ones able to do something like this would be the races of the 'Others' that could use their 'magic' to even regrow limps, but as this were the mortal enemies of humanity the changes of them helping you were lower then nil.
Of course the other high ranked members of Emperor's rule also understood this.
"So it isn't as bad as we feared!"
"But what are we going to do now? If the leader is the only one that can block him it will be impossible for the faction to move at all!"
"This is bad! If we are unable to move others might take the change…."

Immediately chatter broke out amongst the men as they feared about their future.
"Shut up ya bastards!"
Suddenly Jake, sitting next to Dan broke out, instantly silencing everyone in the room.
"It's pretty fucking obvious what we are going to do now.
Ya fuckers weren't even able to beat up this Death Crown scum, so why do you even bother thinking about the rest of the city?
We originally wanted to wait with this 'til we have the whole city, but there is no time now. First of all we will turn our districts into fortresses, fortify all our headquarters and introduce guards and a kind of police around.
We need a tight grip over the territory and the increase in order will please the inhabitants.
Secondly we will start recruiting in a big style.
Thirdly... Rean."
Jake turned to Rean on the other side of the table.
"You will be responsible for…. 'training'.
Half of our guys will be responsible for guarding the place, as for the other half, it will be starting intensive military training and rise their skills.
You as a former military officer have some experience in this don't you? Also at the same time it will be your job to get some military order into this bunch. We cannot rely on some loose groups anymore.
Can you get the job done?"
Rean smiled.
"Of course I can. Guess the three years I had to serve were not for nought after all."
He glanced at the other men on the table and his smile changed a bit.
"Does the training encompass them to?"
"Of course it does."
Bashfully grinning Rean turned over.
"I look forward to 'train' you all!"
Despite the innocence in Rean’s smile all the men suddenly felt their body shudder.
Dan couldn't help but smile seeing this scene. They truly were quite a bunch.
"Ok, let's go o-"
Just as he wanted to get to the next point a door suddenly opened, followed by a figure hasty entering the room.
"Mike ! Where have you been?"
Dan instantly recognized the man who had just entered. Mike on the other side didn't even bother with any formalities or polite gestures.
"We are in much deeper trouble then we thought!"
Dan was stunned for a moment. Seeing that his good friend and aide, who had known since earliest childhood days was this moved and didn't even bother to make any small talk before getting to the point he understood that it had to be something really big.
"What happened?"
Dan's eyes became sharp as he observed Mike's face.
"King's Sanctuary…. has a soul stage expert!"
…..
"FUCK!"
Instantly the whole room was moved and got into a rush.
"Where have all these guys suddenly come from?"
"Weren't soul stage monsters rare? How the hell can three appear here?"
"First Death Crown and now this…."
More and more voices violently rumbled through the room as the men voiced their inner thoughts.
Dan on the other side closed his eyes for a moment before opening them again. Making a single hand motion a cool wind suddenly brushed through the room instantly silencing anyone inside.
"Details."
In midst of all the agitation and excitement Dan actually managed to stay calm and ask the most important question. Mike still standing in front of the door nodded as he saw the calm and composed reaction of Dan.
"Today all the small factions in the eastern territory suddenly banded together and started an attack against the Kings Sanctuary forces starting a bloodbath. The latter's troops were completely unprepared instantly getting suppressed by the overwhelming numbers of the enemies.
In fact judging by the organization of the smaller factions and the fact that they actually didn't war amongst themselves it is highly possible that this whole thing was initiated by Death Crown."
Mike made a small stop, taking a gulp of water from a glass standing on the table.
"Either way, the King's Sanctuary troops were quickly pushed back, suffering horrendous causalities. If we can trust the informants they lost about 150 men. The smaller factions already reached the headquarters when suddenly a single person came out of it.
After this the information is kind of blurry.
But as far as I can guess from it's contents, the person coming out was the old Hesel. King's Sanctuary's leader. The survivors said that he suddenly disappeared from where he had been standing and then….."
Mike stopped for a moment
"Then what?"
Dan asked his eyes growing increasingly cold.
"It… rained blood."
Everyone in the room wide-eyed stared at Mike, suspecting that it was a bad joke. Only Dan and Jake sighed as they heard this.
"Is this really true?"
One man at the back couldn't help but ask.
Mike already wanted to say yes, as suddenly Dan interrupted.
"Yes it is, sigh~
It's an old trick I also know."
"A trick?"
The man disbelieving asked. Jake answered instead of Dan.
"Yes a trick, a stupid but very effective trick.
You just need a small chainsaw and enough speed. The only thing you need to do is run across the first line of attackers, cleanly cutting of their heads with the mini chainsaw and if possible kick their head into the air.
Blood will splash out of the cut open throats and the flying heads and to the men behind them it will seem as if it rains.
It gets more effective if you also take a few guys into the air and make sushi of them there, but this is quite bothersome and most likely completely messes up your clothes."
Silence….
"This is….
"Very brutal isn't it?"
The other men couldn't help but shudder while imagining the scene that would be created that way.
"Either way this makes it even more troublesome.
I guess the guys from the smaller factions are all death?"
Dan asked Mike.
"Yes they are."
"Then this means that there is one more soul stage expert in this city that might turn hostile towards us. But it doesn't change anything we can only hurry up and hope that they won't rally against us
Now everything depends on how Kings Sanctuary reacts, if the ally with Death Crown we are all death. Let's just hope they will at least stay out of this."
Dan stopped for a moment.
"Mike?"
"Yes?"
Dan glared into the others eyes.
"You are in charge of the outer district. As for the things we discussed earlier, ask Jake for the specs.
Mike was surprised for a moment, before slowly nodding.
"You can count on me!"
Rean?"
"Yes!"
"You are in charge of the southern district."
"Yes sir!"
"Jake?"
"Yes!"
"Stop creating trouble."
"Yes,…. eh wai-"
Jake got any as he almost pounced at Dan.
"Miko?"
Dan turned to a man on the other side of the room.
"Yes?"
"Yours is the northern.
To all of you, quickly build up defences and begin recruiting new men. The sooner we can boost out troops and general strengh the higher the chance that we will actually survive through all this.
Ok gentlemen, our time is limited now, make the most of it.
Dismissed!"

Just a Game
“A great corruption is spreading. The people cry out for a savior. For a hero. For YOU! Come join the fight, as the chosen of World Tree! Receive the blessings of the gods, battle fierce monsters, and become the hero you were meant to be, in Arcanum Online!” It was the cheesiest commercial Ethan had ever heard, but the gameplay was enough to draw him - and thousands of others - to the fantasy world of Lazuros. It’s the sort of place that can really draw you in - a huge open world, a deep character customization system, and a feature that makes time pass slower inside the game, extending your limited playtime! It was a little strange, though. As if it was a bit too realistic for a game of swords and sorcery. The NPC’s seemed almost alive, most quests didn’t reset and monsters respawned slowly. Still, for all it’s quirks, it was a good game! Just a game. And nothing more. …right?
