《Infested》Chapter 1

[Chapter 1]
10 days later
I was sitting in once another lecture, at the back of the class. I was slumped over, supporting my head with my right hand. For the first 10 minutes of the lesson, someone behind me kept kicking my chair but I just learnt to ignore these kind of things.
The teacher who was giving the lecture today, was Mr Howards.
He’s a cunt.
He hates me. Don’t know why- well, probably my lack of powers that was required to participate in a fucking super power theory lesson.
He was explaining some points that were not important to me, but due to boredom I tuned in.
“As you lot know, the existence of the super gene originated from 2012. It followed quickly after the appearance of the Symbiotes. Symbiotic parasytes origins are unknown to us but there’s two primary types. The infected and the Genesis. The genesis are the original symbiotes, an unknown alien like species that seem to have evolved to strictly hunt and kill humans. Their mental capacity seems to range depending on the strains of the symbiote. But the ones most commonly found have the intelligence of an ape. Some may be even smarter than humans.”
He stopped to regain his breath and carried on,
“After the attacks of the symbiotes, almost as if an evolutionary response had occurred, the super genes had been present in the new generation of children. The powers range widely but that will be discussed later. Anyways, symbiotes had a newly found enemy. So, with this, a pathogen was evolved that would infect victims and turn them into the infected. A highly dangerous, intelligent and adaptable being that would be able to respond and blend into a human environment. These infected seem to be in higher social hierarchy, normally symbiote commanders or leaders.”
A couple of students were whispering in awe of this.
“Knowing this, do not expect all symbiotes to act as one big group. Some work solo, or fight against each other. They’re truly barbaric.”
‘That’s what we humans do as well though?’ I think to myself.
“The superhuman genes were now at the brink of molecular structure and enabled unworldly abilities. Those who were rank C and above were employed by the Hero Association or H.A for short. The H.A is a brave and valiant group of heroes who strive to keep the population safe and combat against the symbiotes.”

‘That’s strange. Im pretty sure this “valiant and brave’ group monopolise the hero market, whilst forcefully extracting large tax money from the population. As well as that in the news, I’ve seen dozens of reports of heroes destroying whole city blocks whilst drunk or raping people and getting away with it. How the fuck do we fight against a hero who turns bad?’ I pondered.
Mr Howards carried on,
“Well of course, not every ability user decides to join the H.A. Some go rogue or do villainous work. And you know the kind of stuff villains do. I will not further explain this.”
I shuddered as I remember reading yesterday’s headline ‘Electrical villain wipes out 10 000 in Africa.’
“However, here comes the point where it involves you lot! You may not know about this, but recently the H.A has worked with the government to produce a new hero education after the age of 16! After you finish the 6 remaining months of this education, you shall complete a test that can lead you to go into hero training! If you successfully complete 4 years of hero training, you will be released into public as a Class C hero. From then on up, you can get even higher and become famous if so desired” Mr Howards excitedly explains.
Everyone else, gets happy and excited except me.
‘Looks like I’ll have to be a builder or something like that’ I dread.
“So unless you have any questions, the lecture is over.”
Mr Howards skims over the class, completely ignoring my hand up.
I even shout out sir a few times but he completely blanks me.
“Go fuck yourself,” I whisper.
“SIR! SIR! REX JUST VERBALLY ASSAULTED YOU!” Some kid shouts behind me.
I smirk as I slowly turn around to address him, “Hah! Nice try, but sir doesn’t care about me, he always igno-“
I get cut off by Mr Howards responding, “After this lesson is over Rex, get your ass out of my class. You are permanently disallowed from turning up to my lectures”
My eyes open up in shock, and get smaller as I feel multiple, prison-sentence worth emotions swirl around in my mind, I slowly detract my hand and lower my head. A couple people giggle but are stopped when one of the two class goddesses raises her delicate hand.

Her name is Amber. And it suits her. Her long flowing hair is crimson red, the edges outlined with a darker shade of amber that perfectly balances with her eyes. Her pupils are a dark and mysterious orange colour; however they are not threatening but are enticing to the opposite sex. She is greatly admired from the girls and drooled upon from the males. She is quite short and petite and therefore lacks the maturity factory but makes up with that from her rather cute qualities. Her eyelashes are long and perfectly trimmed, whilst her lips are elegant and a soft shade of pink.
‘Beautiful. Shame she’s fucking bitch’ I almost retract the thought as she begins to speak, but due to years of countless bullying I’ve learned everyone’s discrimination against me is relentless. She has always been the one that has ordered attacks on me or has always hated me for no apparent reason. I don’t know what her fucking problem is but that fake smile she puts on pisses me off.
She says, “Sir, is there any pictures of these ‘symbiotes’. Surely they are nothing compared to my fire manipulation abilities.”
Sir chuckles despite of her arrogance.
“Here’s a clip for you sweaty” He smiles at her.
‘What a fucking pedo’ I think.
Sir swipes a holographic screen on his desk and cranes his head behind him to the widescreen.
Upon it is a scene of a block of buildings, home to suburban housing shops, alight on fire as to the right of the recording a 2 story building collapses in on itself.
“This is programme Hexagon News: We are reporting a live symbiote attack on the northern City A district!”
The cameraman moves the camera to quickly scan across the carnage that is occurring.
‘Huh City A huh? If I remember correctly, there’s City A to Z now in the northern part of America. We decided upon that after removing country names and borders and replacing them with massive cities. Each one focusing on different parts of the economy. City Z is where H.A headquarters is.’
The camera man reports to the reporter who is a mid-twenties blonde chick wearing a hexagon cap and a grey overcoat, She has a microphone by her mouth and his shaking in fear.
As the cameraman and the reporter both start moving forward she says, “This poorer district within City A has been under recent small magnitude attacks that were repelled by the local D-Police force but one of this force could not be repelled.”
‘The D-police consisted of locals who were category D heroes who could handle small time attacks. They’re power included things such as higher intelligence, heightened senses, or low-range elemental abilities. Fuckin useless if you ask me.’
The cameraman pans the camera to a park, where the grass has burnt to a crisp, but the camera nearly falls out of the man’s hands as a massive creature turns the corner. It is at least 7 meters tall and is a darkish green colour. It sprouts multiple squid like tentacles and its face is one of a shark like creature. It propels itself forward, using its tentacles to push of building walls, smashing and destroying the walls. It roars, as one of its tentacles picks up a car with ease and chucks it across the street, the vehicle smashing into a house.
The camera woman screams and runs away whilst looking at the camera next to her, behind held by the running cameraman. “This is a class 1 Heavy attack. Class 1 yet this power!”
Once more the camera man looks behind him to a scene which makes him drop the camera. As it lays on the floor, filming the lower half of the scene, you can see a flying symbiote creature land. Its legs are humongous at least 3 metres wide and covered with scales. Just before you hear the camera shut off, you hear someone shout, “Shit is a class 2!”
The recording ends and everyone gasps. Even Amber is shocked.
“Class 1 and 2 are the weakest out of the total of 9 categories. That is why you must undergo training to combat against those who are symbiotic.”
I chuckle and say, “Haha, looks like you lot have to deal with that shit!” I already know Im getting beaten up after this class so I decide to say that anyway.
Everyone looks at me, as they see me laughing whilst sprinting out the lecture.

Grim Beginnings
For most, ghosts and monsters were fantasy. For Tessa Byrne-Reyes, they were a constant in her daily life as a reaper. The legendary gods and creatures of mythology were, to her, historical figures. From a young age, she carried the weight of the world on her shoulders, possessing what she saw as a curse but what her family considered a gift. It was her birthright, to use her abilities to guide the deceased to the afterlife of an eternity in peace or in torment. Her classmates viewed her as "the fainting girl" who would pass out in the middle of a lesson with inexplicable injuries. She experienced each death in the town of Belmont Falls, from the mundane to the gruesome. A gunshot wound in the gut, broken ribs, her heart ceasing to beat for several minutes. No one understood what caused these incidents but over the years, she gained a reputation for being abnormal. While Tessa is the freak of Belmont Falls, Fin Belmont, the charming rebel and son of the richest man in town, is her polar opposite. Knowing each other for years but never saying more than a dozen words between them, one night changes everything, thrusting them into each other's unfamiliar and daunting worlds. Together, with the help of her best friend/his ex-girlfriend Elena, they begin to unravel secrets about their town and their pasts, learning that some secrets are better left buried and grudges can be held for centuries.
