《Decoder;Deconstructor》Chapter 5: Broke

After finally finding the guild building I head inside. I moved quickly towards the counter in the building and waited for assistance to come.
After a few seconds, a lady in a well uniformed dress noticed me and quickly approached.
"Good afternoon, How may I assist you?" The lady looked mature and pretty to say in the least.
"Ah, hello, I wanted to know if there was a library or a bookstore anywhere? I was told that the people here could tell me"
The Lady smiled"Yes there is, but you would need a Guild status card in order to enter the library"
Hah? Guild? Why didn't they put "Guild" in the front as a fucking sign?
"Um, h-how do I get one?"
The lady smiled and grabbed a piece of paper behind the desk, handing it to and elaborating.
"This is a Guild registration form, the requirements to enter the guild is a small fee of 50 Copper coins and aknowledgment of fighting. 3 days after handing it in you should receive your Official Guild status card, granting many privileges places where the other guilds are stationed" After the lady told me what I needed I left the building. The registration will take me some time since I have no money.
?The registration thing seems very thorough, the only problem is that I am currently broke and I have not a fucking single clue on how to get a job that has anything to do with programming. Maybe I could do manual labour...
Crap... my source of information and it's blocked because I need a card.. This card probably has some specific affect on your reputation. If I also recall the word "Guild" then I was on point when I said it was a questing thing for those adventurers.
Then I have to become an adventurer? My abilities aren't meant for this... Wait, on second thought, what if I ask the farmer for some money?
Nah, just asking would make me feel like a bit of a dick, better to just help him and him letting me stay then me asking and just taking.
For once I need to use this fucking brain of mine. What other way to make money is there?
. . . Now that I remember, I did see a blacksmith's shop before, and in some good movies that I've seen blacksmith's usually need help moving things and carrying them around. This is probably going to involve a shitload of working my ass out.
. . . . . . .
I walked over to to the blacksmith's shop that I saw when I first got here.
The blacksmith's shop was named "Roulatho's Blacksmith Shop"
?I entered the shop and was amazed at what I saw inside.
In the front were weapons and many other things, the smithy is most likely stationed at the back behind a door near a counter.
As I took a few footsteps I noticed the swords that were displayed had many wonderous designs, some were detailed up to the tip of the blade, many others had their own beauty.
"I'll be right with you!" I heard a shout coming from the inner area where I could see the smithy through a small crack in the door.
I peered in just for a few seconds until the man opened it.
The Blacksmith, or whoever it was that opened the door, was tall, muscular, and manly. I think this guy is most definitely the blacksmith. (Which should be cliche' for the most part but who cares?)
After he had seen me he smiled.
"What can I do for you today young man?"
I walked over to the counter as the man did too.
"Listen, I need a job, I don't know if it would be fine to assist you with anything that you could use hel-"
The blacksmith rose his hand gently to stop me from going.
"Sorry, but I don't need any help" The man had an impassive expression on his face.
"Please, I don't need that much, I have a place to stay and I'm free for half the day, I don't have any other way of getting a job"
I could see that my little trick was working his troubled expression, I mean all I practically wanted was to get the money so then I can get the card, and later on the information.
"Hmm, I could probably use some extra hands now that I think about it, But..."
I gave him a look of expectation."please"
The Blacksmith sighed "Alright, you win.. But listen, don't expect this to be easy, You start tomorrow in the morning, unless you have any problems just tell me when you get here and I'll see to it yeah?"His voice sounded rough.
"Thank you, and by the way my name is Arvis"
"Nice to meet you Arvis, the name's Gerhest, come tomorrow morning at daybreak" I nodded with a smile and left the shop.
By now the sun was beginning to set, and I think that if I stay any longer I'll end up breaking my promise with the farmer.
I had a good feeling about this, I wasn't sure what to expect but as soon as I get some money I'm getting that guild card and getting what I need.
I'm not the type of person to plan ahead, personally I think that everything will be fine as long as I don't screw up too much.
To be honest I don't exactly feel anything in this new world, its something that I've come to understand in what I feel, just like how I can see the sun set, I don't feel anything.
Maybe other people would like the idea of going to another world, but leaving behind something that you've been stuck with for your whole life seemed unreal to me, just like the technology in my old world.
I hastened my pace without thinking about it any further and arrived at the farm much quicker then I would have expected.
I could already see the farmer taking a seat down on a wooden stool as he watched over his land.
As I aproached him he slightly smiled.
"You look a satisfied, did anything good happen to you?"
"sorry I took so long, I know it isn't of much of importance to you, but I needed a card to enter a library, and sadly I don't have any money to pay for the registration fee, so I got a job at the blacksmith"
"I see, so you had your troubles, but you still made up for it, congradulations"

"Thanks, aside from that, I don't think I've ever told you my name and neither had you."
The farmer nodded and opened his mouth to speak.
"My name is Lajel Erevas, but many people call me Laj, and yours?"
"Its Arvis Yorvell, Just call me by my first name though"
"Alright Arvis"He smiled.
He offered a small yellow fruit that looked similar to that of a watermelon but was the size of a kiwi and I took it.
"Those small fruits are called Ferlion, they are a delicacy in the northern parts of this continent"
I looked at it and when I took a bite my face scrunched from the incredibly sour taste, as Lajel saw this he laughed.
"Hahaha, of course thats one of its distinc features, the other is its skin, try peeling off a bit of the skin and tasting it"
I did as he said and peeled off the skin, I ate the skin and honestly it tasted rather weird, it tasted like nothing, rather it had some sweet taste but it had a bland feel to it.
"How's it taste?"
"The skin has nothing to do with inside, its odd"
Laj Chuckled.
"Ferlions are special fruits because they are processed by natural means. The older the fruit gets, the stronger the taste, and I've heard that some people even use the citric acid to stop the bleeding from a wound"
How things are possible, are by no means important, things just are because they are if you ask how I view this.
"There are many other different types of fruits here, but the most uncommon out of all of them is the Ferlion fruit being that they are different from other common fruits in this continent"
Alright, this conversation is simply stupid, I think its time to change the subject.
"Speaking of the north and this continent, can you tell me more about this continent?" Just the right way to take things for a turn.
Laj nodded as he looked off into the sky.
"This continent is called 'Dastheim' and the west continent is mostly referred to as the Demon Continent, but as I said not many people come from there. The reason for that is because the border holds a special type of barrier magic that stops anyone from entering it, at least thats what I know.
Although there have been some cases where people have passed through the barrier, it depends on the capabilities of said person.
Other than those people that have gone through there thats about it, theres never once been a time where the barrier has fallen since the Fall of Scarothus"
Laj explained slowly every bit and detail.
"What is the fall of Scarothus?" I futher questioned.
"The fall of Scarothus is what they called it after the demons grew in such numbers that they could've posed a serious problem to the human race, starting with the leader, Scarothus.
Scarothus was a demonic mage that possessed the ability to command demons with a single look, and back then magic was not as developed as it is now.
Nowadays people can create many things using magic afinity, and even skills that require magic is greatly known throughout the kingdoms of Dastheim, unfortunately, talent and ability are two separate things, and people that are able to use magic are more arrogant then anyone you would come by"
"I see... Can you tell me about the legends of this country?"
"hehe, I'll tell you later, right now it's high time we get some rest, and besides, you have plans to work for tomorrow don't you?" Without noticing, the sun had set and it was starting to go dark.
Fuck, I'm not much of a sleeper, I'm more of a stay up late kind of person , but he does have a point though.
"Alright, hope we can continue this tomorrow"
The man was at least nice enough to let me stay, so I don't have much of a say in this. I have to work tomorrow to help this guy, so I'll need to explain that to the blacksmith.
I went to the guest room that Laj gave me to stay in and fell asleep.
. . . . . . . . . .
*Flashback*
Within seconds I was thrown to the ground.
"You piece of shit, you better bring the money tomorrow for sure" The voice of my bully always hit me harder then the punches he'd throw at me.
I could feel all the bruises that were left from the other assholes that would beat me up.
I could tell you that it was like that everyday, wherever I was, pain always followed me. It wasn't all that bad though, because if it weren't for them, I would have never found my talent for programming.
The first time I had encountered programming was by mistake, it was because of my frusteration with using computer programs that didn't do as I wanted.
Of course eventually, I had stopped going to school with my addiction, in having control over a system that would listen to my every command. It made me feel satisfied.
The funny thing about it was that I was working as a programmer with a contract before I had even finished highschool, and it was something I thought of as an achievement.
I didn't really need money though, because my mother had worked as a director for a very well known TV program, so she paid the bills for the house and whatever needed to be paid. I did lie about studying when I had become a shut in because of my addiction with computer programing, but it didn't matter to me.
I knew very well what I loved, and that was it for me. I was respected in the world of code, and was even given a title that most would want.
My strength in coding was so great that many people had offered me a job, and I wasn't even 18 years old yet. Of course though, in the end my high-school sent out a mail to my door stating that they were going to drop me if I didn't go by the end of the month, so..
I had no choice, I couldn't leave school, after I looked for a way to get a job without any certificated information, it was practically impossible. Something like this is not what I wanted, and I couldn't find a way out.
Society has a way of destroying the things people love most, but I never let it get to me because of what the words that my father had left me with always stayed with me, thats why.

Exponential Mana Regeneration
When the Change occurred, humanity suddenly found itself with superhuman constitutions and the ability to use mana. All the government leaders had known about it beforehand and had made an announcement, so there was little strife and instead excitement to loot the dungeons that the Change had created. Kyle Anders was incredibly excited when he saw his starting skill, called Exponential Mana Regeneration, but his excitement quickly waned when he realized it was almost useless with his starting mana pool of twenty. He had nearly given up hope on being a mage when his family got him a new skill for his 18th birthday. Suddenly, with his mana pool expanded because of the skill, Kyle’s mana regeneration shot through the roof. But while humanity worked hard to loot dungeons and increase their skills and stats, Change was coming, and peace cannot last forever. The story is currently on haitus. (This story is a work in progress. As the first story that I have ever written, the beginning, especially the first ten chapters or so, needs heavy editing. I have decided to continue writing the story instead of going back and editing the beginning. I hope that despite all its flaws you will still find my story enjoyable.)

Battles are fought on the old highways and in dilapidated towns and once-great cities. And as the conflict escalates, all of North America faces the threat of being burnt away by nuclear fire. Against this backdrop of war, Alexandra tries to uncover the long-hidden secrets behind the plague, her abilities, and the two men fighting to decide the fate of the United States - Henry Bedford, Alexandra's father and leader of the Directorate, and John Martin, the mysterious figure at the heart of the New England Alliance who may hold the key to everything she seeks. None of this will matter, however, unless Alexandra can prevent the power growing inside her from taking over and consuming the very world she is fighting to save. Author's Notes: I appreciate you taking a look at my novel, The Girl from the Mountain. If you're a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, military thrillers, and/or cosmic horror, I think you'll enjoy this story. I completed the novel's first draft back in 2011 and made significant changes in 2016. Since then, I've more-or-less sat on the manuscript while working on other projects. Thanks to a bit of prodding, I've decided to send this story out into the wild with some touch-ups and additional revisions. I welcome any comments or criticisms, and I hope you enjoy The Girl from the Mountain!
