Roderick felt the warm breath of the monster while Spencer felt its teeth sink in his arm. Blood climbed upwards as the creature drove his teeth deep to the point where he crushed his bone. Spencer would have given up on fighting the damn thing if Roderick hadn’t pulled him. Roderick was showing effort. Spencer needed to do the same. Roderick pulled his other hand like he was in a tug of war with the monster in the dark cave. He knew he had won when Spencer lost his arm. Beast was also having a tough time seeing in the darkness because it now started munching the arm. As the monster enjoyed the taste and crunch of Spencer's hand, Roderick made him stand on his feet and run along with him. "I don’t want to run." Spencer said in agony, "There might be another one waiting for us." "Don’t worry. This time I will give up my hand." Roderick carried him while he ran with the weight of his friend. "Did it also eat the locket?" Roderick asked his friend on his shoulder. "No, I'm wearing it." Roderick felt the locket hit his chest. They were hearing loud roars from the nightmare like monsters. "I had told you this was not a good idea. I should have sold this shit." Spencer spoke, trying to distract himself from the pain by blaming Roderick. Roderick didn’t care about the blame. He knew he was right. And now Spencer was near to death due to his choice. He heard wet tramps behind them. Roderick put him down and waited for his fate. Instead Roderick heard the roar get past him along with some squeamish liquid dropping in parabola motion. The sound faded away with an echo. "What happened?" Spencer asked. "I don’t know. Is it also running from something?" When they took few steps, Spencer felt the ground below his shoes disappear. When the oozing blood from Spencer's arm rose up to Roderick's face then Roderick realized Spencer was falling. As fast as he could, he stretched his arm and caught Spencer from the locket. Spencer felt the jolt on his neck like he was being hanged. His feet wriggled all the while he choked. I can't take it out of my neck. I'll fall to death if I do. He thought, but every next second felt more painful than the last. Roderick was pulling him up by his full strength. His neck took all the strength and soon he started to black out by the choking. Unable to bear pain of being hanged, Spencer instinctively took his head out of the locket. Roderick fell on the floor by his back. He fell in dismay when the locket landed on his chest, but his friend landed nowhere near him. Now he was left all alone in the dark place where monsters were lurking for him. A squid like creature crawled on its own liquids to reach towards him. Squid's eyes, big as a football, glowed in the dark. And it was approaching nearer to him. Then its teeth appeared as it spread its tentacles. Roderick was going to get those teeth. "Stop!" a voice came behind the squid, "He has the locket."

Overseer
From the nothingness I appeared. Bodiless, voiceless, ageless, I have only thoughts and emotions to guide me. My one connection to the world lies in the hearts of a small colony of lizards, just on the cusp of maturing. I reach out to them without hands, inspiring them to be more than what they are, shaping their bodies from visions of lost memories. But where do the memories come from? I am always left with more questions than answers. In my lonely shapeless existence the lizards cannot hear my words, and they cannot feel my touch, and I must wonder, do I even really exist? --- Called emotional, abstract, and beautiful by readers, this story is an observational account of a disembodied entity that has the power to influence and change a race of mildly intelligent lizard creatures. Memories of a previous life often serve as inspiration, but also generate questions as to whom the entity might have been before it became an Overseer. (presented in short chapters) (Thank you readers for getting my story into the top 5 ;u; ~
