《DeadEnd's Isekai》Chapter 5: Mmmm Carrots.

Alphine looked over to Alvar who was standing with his head up looking into the hole they just created, he was in a state of shock that they managed to create a hole and that he won’t die a slave in the cave. Tears began running down his face, by all means he was happy that he can start a better life however his brother couldn’t.
He felt a warm hand on his shoulder when he looked up he saw the face of an idiot, the face of a person who possibly was on funky shrooms, the face of his friend smiling. “What are you waiting for? Let’s check out the view.” Alphine said looking at his pointy-eared friend “Sure.” Alvar smiled back. They crawled up through the rocky hole that was in their ceiling.
Alphine couldn’t believe his eyes, he saw small patches of yellowish-green grass that dotted the dry rocky soil mixed with sand, this looked a lot like a typical savannah from his world. The trees looked anorexic most likely from the complete lack of water in the area. The two observed this wasteland's beauty.
Alvar looked over to Alphine who was still gazing at the scenery. “We should get moving the guards might see us.” The dark-haired elf suggested. His short human blooded friend nodded before closing his eyes, still crying at the scenery he smiled looking over to Alvar, “Alright let’s go!” he replied.
The two decided that the best way to find a place to stay is to run in the direction with the most greenery, for it's a sign that there's water near by meaning villages would settle in said area.
While Alvar was running and Alphine was dying inside because of his lack of athletic skills, his spiky-haired-friend looked over to the his attempt at running behind him “So where are you from?”
“Uhhh, desert, I’m not too sure myself.” Alphine replied genuinely uncertain of where he was supposed to be from. Alvar looked over to the human “What do you mean you don’t know?” The young human scratched the back of his head “I think I tripped on a rock reeally hard, lost my memory, and began wandering around until I got captured by the slave traders.” He said with an affirming-nod. Alvar felt bad for his friend but decided to stay quiet to not ruin the mood.

After a while of running through the patchy savannah it was starting to turn dark, the two decided that it’s best to rest for a while so that they have the energy to keep running early in the morning when most guards are asleep.
The next morning, Alphine was walking through a denser part of the savannah, tasked by Alvar to find something to eat for breakfast while he would start a fire knowing that Alphine would probably try banging ordinary rocks to create the sparks.
The rays of light that the giant blue orb of light in the sky gave off were blinding to the messy-haired human who was used to the lack of light in the cave he spent a good while in. Alphine was wondering where in this still slightly hellish terrain he would find something to eat. While pondering if he would find a gas station to buy curry ramen, he tripped over something.
Alphine's gaze darted over to what he tripped on, it looked a lot like a root plant, some orange was peeking out from under the stem which itself was a bright green, almost as if it was asking for an animal to take a bite. The red-eyed human rubbed his hands before starting to tug at the plant, after being unable to pull it out with regular force, he started pulling harder “What is this, King Arthur’s carrot.” he gritted his teeth, pulling the root plant's stem with the strength of a pro wrestler.
Then he pulled it out however the knockback made him close his eyes and forced his ass to make contact with the ground. He opened his eyes slowly seeing the bright stem, then his gaze went down to see the juicy orange carrot, then his eyes noticed the skinny spider-like le-
Alphines eyes widen throwing the demon into a tree. The carrot slid down the tree before starting to hiss. Upon further inspection, he saw that the “carrot” also had a pair of white eyes as well as a mouth that looked like it was carved out much like a pumpkin. He realised that the hissing sound was a call for help when he saw multiple “carrots” crawl out of the hole.

Alphine was fully prepared to take part in the “carrot” genocide however as soon as the carrots started skittering over to him he was quickly outnumbered and bit multiple times. However much to his surprise, the “carrot’s” bites didn’t hurt too much, it felt like someone pinched you.
Alvar was placing some stones down, in the shape of a ring, before placing a small nest he made out of dry grass into the middle of the circle. He grabbed two small bits of flint he found while gathering materials for the fire and began scraping the two chips of flint against each other over the nest until a spark hits the dry grass. The dry grass began smoking, then seconds later it started a small fire. He added some sticks to keep it going as well as to increase the flame’s size.
Alvar decided to sit down and rest while his friend is collecting something for them to eat. “Oh hey Alvar, I got the food” The human announced. Alvar got up and turned his head to Alphine who was covered in crab roots. “WHAT HAPPENED!” Alvar cried, shocked how Alphine saw a crab root nest and decided that he should pick it.

While Alvar was picking the crab roots off Alphine's body he explained that crab roots are creatures that hunt for small animals by disguising themselves as regular plants before jumping at the target in massive packs. Once the crab roots were picked off the messy-haired human, they got crudely broken into bits by Alvar before half of them were thrown on top of a thin stone slab that was over the fire to cook them.
The short human was rubbing his cheek while laying down on the grass. “I think they’re cooked!” The elf shouted, calling over his friend. Alphine walked over to the stone slab, “Here have a stick I sharpened the end so you can impale the crab root.” He explained. The red-eyed boy grabbed a stick and impaled a few carrots before eating them like a vegetarian shish kebab.
Alphine took one bite of the crab roots and it felt like he was in one of G#rdon Ramsay’s restaurants. While it wasn’t salted and it was fairly burnt it was light years above the “food” he got served in the cave. The two kept on eating the crab roots until the stone slab was empty.
Alvar placed his hands on his hips before turning to his friend “Right, let’s get going, I think we should keep the stone slab and the crab roots, we probably will need them again.” he suggested. Alphine agreed, the two kept on the journey to get a place to stay and to get far away from the caves.
While the two were running they saw a sign. They approached it and inspected what it said “Dirtinton Village” Alvar read out loud.
The two look at each other and nodded simultaneously.

Experience is accumulated by battling enormous monsters the size of buildings. Political intrigue and romance elements ramp up as the series progresses. I originally wrote this story after playing Monster Hunter with my niece. She was 12 at the time, already an avid reader, and wanted to read my other published books. I'm a licensed psychotherapist specializing in severe trauma so I tend toward darker fiction. I told her my usual books are too brutal for her but I'd write her something special. The result was this series, which has been praised by both teens and adults for its depth and universal appeal. It begins with an emphasis on cultural elements because I consulted with a trained anthropologist to craft this neolithic setting down to exacting social detail. After these opening chapters, it rapidly shifts to an action-packed adventure. The first 3 books are fully written as of November 2020, totalling approximately 69 chapters. The first book has been professionally edited already. The following two books require some editing which I'll do on a chapter-by-chapter basis as releases progress. I welcome reviews and comments. Writing is a passion, and reader engagement makes my labor all the sweeter.
