《The Undeniable Labyrinth》Chapter Sixty Two – Desperation

She tried to stifle a yawn, failed – physical exhaustion bearing down on her heavily, muscles turning painfully stiff. Just covering the yawn was an effort. Her skull throbbed with each heartbeat. All of it was the result of final dissipation, withdrawal from the hormones that had kept her up, through the fight with Goshram and the negotiations with the group. Althea was worse when Traejan returned with a tray of food. She forced herself to shovel down the lumpy broth into her demanding stomach. The muck left an unpleasant, thick sticky coating on the inside of her mouth. Her little friends needed sustenance as much as she did, so she suffered silently.
“You have a keen understanding of the mercenary mind,” Kyso told her, smile glowing, returned to sit in the chair the man Obe’s had, right across the table from her.
“There are always people like that,” she forced out, wiping offending sauce from her lips. In the Palmyri Century – on the lost worlds – they could be found “on any world.”
Weakness had her leaning forwards on her arms, over the battered and stained table. Her eyelids were heavy as she looked across at Kyso.
“Even civilized ones,” Althea told him flatly – the Palmyri weren’t anything to brag about. “You learn to deal with them. Greed is always a predictable motive, desperation too.”
Leaning against the other side of the table, Traejan interposed himself into the discussion.
“And that makes you believe you can trust them,” his voice was bitter, unyielding, his glance, disapproving. “You do know the kind of people you’ve chosen?”
She knew, tiredly waved him on. Go ahead, vent.
“Thieves, bastards – I know at least one is a killer,” he pointed out. “How do I know, you ask?”

She had enough strength to shrug, barely.
“Because he killed someone right outside this hall,” Traejan continued. “Left the body on the bloody snow, for everyone to see.”
“Then I’ll need you to keep an eye on them,” she told him through another stifled yawn.
“Six of them,” Traejan pointed out. “Three of us.”
Four.
Kyso turned to him.
“I would say she counts as four or five on her own, boy.”
Althea winced at the compliment. She looked over the mug of brew Kyso pushed over to her, then up the old man, raised her eyebrows. He flashed a grin. She could easily smell the harsh tang of alcohol.
“It’s strong,” he warned her.
Just what she needed. Alcohol, though excellent fuel for her NANs, could ruin her coordination, her judgment and potentially knock her out completely. She desperately needed something to wash away the foul stickiness in her mouth. It was worth the risk. Althea took the mug in both hands, took a sip. It tasted of chemicals, ashes, but it was strong. She gulped it down, relishing the sudden warmth it provided.
“They will turn against us.” Traejan said it as though he knew it to be a fact. “Is that what you want?”
It would make certain things easier, she decided, if they did. At least morally.
“I want skill,” she told him instead. “I want experience.”
“What you’re going to get is a knife in the back,” he insisted. “Probably several.”

PokéSync (No Links)
Note: Half the people reading the other version hated the blue hyperlinks for references. Creating one without those links was the best solution I could come up with. If you want the links if you're not familiar with Pokémon, then go here. Learn about Rhea and her journey through the Pokemon World. You will meet many people and see how a realistic Pokemon experience might be. Rhea may be the main protagonist of our story, but to fully understand this world, we will be diving into various other PoV along the way, but never straying too far from our main three girls! Being strong and being weak is a form of perspective. Are you really as weak as you think you are? Do you really have the power to level mountains and rend the seas? If people tell you are god then you are god, if people tell you are nothing then you are nothing. But who actually sees the whole picture? A not-so-good man (evil) managed to get transported to a not-so-real world (game-like) by a not-so-caring god (lazy). The world uses the all-so-famous “stats”, but he has no access to the so-called “system”. At least he managed to get a cheat from the lazy god, even if it took all his potential. The Girl Named Rino
Oh. Hello. I didn't see you come in. No, don't worry. I don't need to hear your name. I already know what it is. I also knew that you'd come up at around this time. But, at the same time, I also didn't know. It's very hard to put into words - but that's what happens when you become the Chaos God. Your psyche gets messed up, big time. That's even more so for me, who was already warped enough to confuse reality with imagination - and, even make the rest of the universe believe that it was so. But, enough about me. Let's talk about you. You seem to come from a very far away land. It's faint, but your presence is there - in a relatively primitive planet. No wonder, no one wanted to stay in, or conquer your region of the universe - there's nothing worth controlling there. Your existence, much like your entire solar system, also seems to be pretty insignificant. Tell me, is your race capable of destroying your own world? Oh, you're already well along the way? Global Warming? Pollution? Overpopulation? Nuclear weapons? Wow... it's been many millenia since I'd last heard of such ancient concepts from someone who is actually living through it. Still, good job getting that far. That means that your world is now, at least, worth considering as a possible place to install a World System. If I find the time, I'll try surveying it. You can just thank me, later. Oh wait! What kind of person am I, not even offering my guest any hospitality. I'm ashamed. Please, take a seat. What would you like? I have everything the multiverse has to offer, whatever it is you want - I can get. Ah! After we talk, would you mind, if I asked you to do me a tiny favor? There's this girl, I want to keep tabs on. She's in one of the Worlds that I preside over, it's called Aiarthe. But, for some reason, I can't see her - not directly, at least. All I need you to do, is check up on her from time to time. Whether you do it as a pure spectator or through someone else's eyes, is entirely up to you. Really!? You would!? Wow! Thanks! You really did me, a huge solid there! For agreeing so quickly, how about I get started on surveying that planet of yours, right now!? You can help yourself, to anything in the fridge! Well, see ya!
