《This world is strange》Chapter 94. The tower's ground floor

After a look at the counter, Cathrine decided to sit down on one of the chairs. She was tired after running around the city with her pursuers.
"Could we rest for a little bit?"
"Sure. We don't have to rush. You can take a break, while I'll search around here."
"Thank you."
The counter's top was empty, but there were a few drawers and doors on it. After searching through them he found a dossier filled with papers.
"These are speaking about donations? It was held in the basement, but it does not mention anything about what was it all about. Just a bunch of names and numbers on it."
He showed it to her and then sit on another chair.
"This whole place seems strange, just from the way it is. Why is there only one entrance and exit? Shouldn't be there more doors to go out of this room?"
"I guess so. Though you know that these guys are not like the usual people. They were the geniuses in the past, who made all sorts of stuff happen, that was impossible for any other person."
"Really? How much do you know about them?"
"I've only read a few things. They all had crazy ideas about magic and how to use it. One of them was the one, who got the idea of the golems. The other one made potions, that could resurrect dead people. Also, there was another that disintegrated a whole city in a few seconds. I thought these stories are exaggerations, but now that I saw these golems, that are far superior, than the ones we can make nowadays and all these other things as well, I think I would believe all of it."
"I kinda feel the same as you. These things do not look like they are from this world..."

'Wait! Did other people also got here in the past?'
Catherine chuckled.
"That is a good impression of them. I was also wondering if they got these ideas from the gods or something."
"Gods? Do you believe there is more than one god?"
"I would say so. Yes. There is more than one god, for sure."
"How is that so?"
"You know about the god Esnar right?"
"Yes."
"He has only been worshipped by the people in the last one thousand years or so. Before that, they worshipped someone different. Which is strange, because people only worship Esnar, because he showed miracle in a lot of places and there were people called prophets, who had amazing powers, that was incomparable to anything that anyone ever saw before."
"Are you sure they weren't just magicians?"
"Obviously. I've met one of them a hundred years ago. He healed someone who had a hole in the chest. Meanwhile, I felt no magical power emanating from them."
"That is strange."
'I've come here because of Silvia, but I'm still using magic. Is it just because I'm not here on her behalf, just for her to have fun? Also, she seems pleased with the things that are happening nowadays. I mean she hasn't given me any order, quest, or anything.'
Then just like an answer to him, a window popped up.
[Quest acquired
Investigate the basement of the iron tower.
Rewards: ???]
'This is strange. Also, what does the ??? reward mean? Is it something that I don't know until I get it, or is it nothing?'
"Are you okay Joseph?"
"Oh! Yes! I am!"
"You were spacing out. Are you tired as well?"
"Just a little bit. But we should go to the elevator sooner or later."

"Yeah. Right! How do you know about what that is? You said something like you have seen it somewhere."
"Kind of. You won't believe it if I say where did I see it."
"Why not?"
"Because it was in a dream!"
"A dream?"
"Yes! I was dreaming about a big building, that reached the sky. I walked in there with different people and got into one of these elevators. It brought us up to the upper floors. But it's kinda hazy and I don't remember much."
"I see. It's definitely a strange dream."
"Right?"
'I simply can't say that I have seen it in another world. It's better this way.'
Joseph stood up.
"Shal we go now?"
"Yes. I'm fine for now. Except if we have to fight more of those things."
"I don't think they are going to be in here."
"Who knows."
He looked at the camera, which was still focused on them.
"Also the one that is watching us is probably bored by now."
Catherine looked at the camera as well. It was always following them as they moved, so it was obviously watching them.
"Was that thing also in your dream?"
"There was some, but they only moved back and forth."
They walked to the elevator and Joseph pressed the bottom button.
The elevator came up from the basement.
"It seems like someone went down before us."
Catherine just stood there waiting.
When it got to their floor, the doors opened up and they walked in. As the elevator moved a little, she got scared and almost jumped out.
"Don't worry, this thing will move a little while we are in it, but get used to it. So we want to go down..."
He looked at the panel, which had 12 buttons, one for each upper floor, a 0 for the floor they were at, and on the bottom a B, which probably was the basement. The only problem was that next to that one was a keyhole, and even when he pressed the button nothing happened.
"It seems like we'll need the key for the basement floor."
"What? Key?"
"Yes. Look!"
He pointed at it. She looked at the keyhole and touched it. After a second she pulled her hand away.
"I was thinking about using magic for it, but that might make it worse. I don't know if they have any protection against it."
"I thought about the same thing. So we should look around on the other floors first."
"Yes."
They pressed the first button. The elevator started to go up. Catherine almost fell down from the surprise. After a few seconds, they arrived and she jumped out.
"Phew! This was strange. Is this how that thing works?"
"Seems like it."
Joseph walked out and they looked around. The floor looked just the same as the base floor, except it was empty and only had the torches on the wall.
They walked around the whole room but found nothing. Joseph walked back into the elevator.
"I think we should go to the next floor."
"Just a second!"
Catherine walked around for a few more seconds, then entered. Joseph smiled when she didn't look at him.
'She is like a child, who got scared from the elevator.'
They looked at all the floors, but until the 9th one, it was all empty. They wanted to give up when the door opened on the last floor.

Reinventing the Struggle
The (sort of) original working title for this was "Reincarnated into a neo-feudal world of mecha knights, I will reinvent the panzerkampfwagen and mess up the social political order!" or something along those lines. And honestly that's a good enough synopsis given the nature of isekai titles. This story is unapologetic trash but at least it's the least cringe stuff I have written so far, so here it goes.
