《Smoking Bandits》SB2.3 - Pine Co
Advertisement
Like most military units at the Company level, Pine Co has only 160 personnel and is led by a Major. However, when in a state of martial law, Pine Co can mobilize 6000 hunters in Pinetown to become a local militia unit.
This mobilization can be done in a matter of hours because every hunter is always carrying their weapons. So there is no need for a procedure to open the armory and weapons distribution.
Once the hunters arrive at the gathering point, they can immediately receive the mission and are integrated with Pine Co personnel.
Also, despite its modest number of personnel, Pine Co is a light infantry unit that can operate independently without the support of artillery or cavalry elements. Therefore the members are equipped, trained, and paid above the standard of regular infantry units.
From the lowest rank soldiers to the highest officers, all Pine Co personnel are required to maintain Combat Qualification at a score of 8.6.
Major Jovic had just finished leading the afternoon Physical Exercise when a Lieutenant ran over to him carrying his chest rig, Sig Sauer P226, and Sig SG 553.
"Sir, there was an incident at Villa Ezter. Sir Dekker and his three personal bodyguards were killed last night."
Major Jovic immediately put on his chest rig, at the same time 2 units of SUV double-cab approached him.
"Ask Captain Jaret to come after me."
"Sir!"
After grabbing the SG 553 offered by the Lieutenant, Major Jovic then climbed into the back seat of the second SUV.

Initially, Villa Ezter was a compound built as a shelter for Pinetown pioneers, and was designed to ward off invasion or infiltration. Therefore, infiltrating Villa Ezter was not easy, let alone killing four people inside without being detected.

After observing Sir Dekker's body for some time, Major Jovic then turned his head towards Villa Ezter's Security Chief.
"There were no screams, gunshots, or any other trace."
"Yeah." The Security Chief took a deep breath before continuing. "I also don't understand how the killer got past more than 120 guards, workers, and servants in this villa as he carried out the items from the armory, Sir Dekker's personal safebox, and other items."
Major Jovic didn't care about what the killer took, except for the items of the armory. "What items did the killer take from the armory?"
"24 AK-102, 10 AK-102SD, 10 MP9SD, 8 M14, 8 Ultimax 100, 50 Glock 19, 8 GP-36. All are non-serialized products purchased from Pine PX Store."
The Security Chief paused for a moment before continuing.
"Tens of thousands ammunition, various types of grenades, Semtex, TNT, and other equipment."
Hearing the details mentioned by the Security Chief, dizziness immediately struck Major Jovic's forehead.
'Hopefully the killer will sell the weapons and equipment, and not form a band of marauders in Pinetown.' Major Jovic then turned his head towards the platform in the center of the basement.
"What's Sir Dekker doing here?"
"I don't know. Sir Dekker hardly ever talks to the locals he hires."
Major Jovic immediately contemplated. Two months ago Sir Dekker arrived in Pinetown with three personal bodyguards and a Magic Engineer. He then rented Villa Ezter from Pine Co and employed more than 100 local people.
Major Jovic knew Sir Dekker was using an alias. But he did not dig too deep because the newcomer had a solid connection.
Last week, the Magic Engineer brought by Sir Dekker slipped on the stairs and broke his neck. His spies reported some irregularities in the incident, but he decided not to interfere.

'Are the two incidents related?' asked Major Jovic internally. However, in the end he could only sigh.
"I hope you and all the people in the villa will not mind being interrogated using Truth Scroll."
"Of course not." The Security Chief answered confidently.

After lit a Kamel, Major Jovic then turned his head towards Captain Jaret.
"What did you find?"
"Nothing, no matter how I combed the outer wall, I didn't find anything."
Major Jovic instantly took a deep sigh. If the best tracker in Pinetown didn't find any traces, then there was nothing he could do.
In a low voice Major Jovic then said, "Interrogation using Truth Scroll also did not result in anything?"
A big question mark instantly filled Captain Jaret's forehead. "No trace, no insider, then what are we going to do?"
"Send what we find to Regimental HQ and let them decide."
"Then I'll go back to Sawmill 55, can't leave the place for too long."
Without waiting for an answer from his superior, Captain Jaret left Villa Ezter.

At dusk Glue Pub is not crowded. Most of the visitors come only for late lunch before continuing their activities. Behind the counter, Milev is engrossed in wiping a wine glass when Major Jovic enters and walks over to him.
As a fellow Pinetown pioneer, Milev was very familiar with Major Jovic's habits. If he comes with a glooming face, then he doesn't come to drink.
While handing a glass of iced lemon tea, Milev greets Major Jovic, "What news have you brought?"
"Weird news, a very weird news."
"I'm listening."
After sipping the iced lemon tea, Major Jovic then recounted the incident at Villa Ezter, and slowly but surely Milev's forehead wrinkled.
"Jovic, you're not spitting bullshit, are you?"
"Have I ever bullshitting you?"
After pondering for a moment, Milev shook his head. "I'll post the news on the bulletin board then."
"Thank you."
Knowing that hostile elements are operating in an area can increase the chance of survival of allied elements. Therefore, Pine Co is actively looking for intel regarding the Hostile Race movement and openly announcing it.
It's just that, for an unknown reason, most hunters in Pinetown are reluctant to visit the bulletin board at Pine Co, and prefer to exchange information at a drinking place like Glue Pub.
Therefore, Major Jovic took the initiative to create a second bulletin board at Glue Pub.
When Milev returned to the counter, Major Jovic immediately said, "Now, can you prepare an extra-large lunch for me?"
"Roger."
Cheerfully, Milev then delivered Major Jovic's order to the kitchen.

It's meant to be a more 'fun' story, so I won't stress too much on making everything too detailed or anything. A Virtual Invasion
An invasion from another dimension is shut down by an Empire's traitor and the world has a scant few decades to build the strength to resist a multidimensional Empire. How will the world fair when no one even knows its doom is one barred gate away? Fortunately, the traitor has a plan. Maybe with a bit of luck and planning, he can build a force to defend the world without anyone realizing it. Author's Thoughts: What is litRPG (From wikipedia) - LitRPG, short for Literary Role Playing Game, is a literary genre combining the conventions of MMORPGs with science-fiction fantasy novels.[1] LitRPG is a literary genre where games or game-like challenges form an essential part of the story. A LitRPG work simultaneously narrates the story of characters inside and outside of the game-world. At least some of the characters in a LitRPG novel therefore understand that they are playing a game: they are 'meta-aware'. So, while Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel, a book about people creating avatars and interacting in a Lord of the Rings MMORPG would be a LitRPG novel. Why do I read them? You know, I am not too sure. I love MMOs. I played them, quit them, joined up and repeated the cycle. They are fun! They are a massive waste of time but so are most games. Do I want to read about someone else playing them? Sort of?The advent of VR and the possibility of VR someday becoming so immersive that you can't tell them from reality sets the imagination on fire. What if this could be life? But most stories fall short. At the end of the day the protagonist hangs up his VR helmet and goes to have dinner with his mom and dad or other family and it becomes meaningless. It's like the story that ends because the main character woke up and nothing you read matters. There have been some books that explore the concept of the intersection of reality and total immersion VR. Enders Game is a classic. There were a few others that escape me but they exist, however, the cross between the game and reality is weak.So what if the game was real? The technology needed for total immersion VR is so advanced that by the time we reach that goal technology should have naturally evolved to include several items. You must have direct neural input. You simply can't have a total immersion (all senses and perfect presence) experience without this basic prerequisite. If you have direct neural access, you can probably do neat things like feed knowledge and skills directly to that person. You can undoubtedly do many horrible things as well. Muscles are controlled by the brain. If you control the brain why would you let the body just sit there and rot? A person that sits unmoving for 24 hours a day will have their body whither away just like a coma patient. However, if you control the brain you could control the muscles. On a basic level, this would be isometric impulses, working muscle group against muscle group to avoid atrophy. Taken to its logical conclusion you would be able to gain muscle mass and program muscle memory. The flip side is that you could remote control their body... but let's not go there. So what would people do if it were real? Well, they would probably limit and regulate it since the drawbacks are very obvious. Even if you look at the basic aspects of this you can see some negative possibilities. Look at the Sword Art Online anime. Personally, I think they missed the boat by putting a bomb in the VR helmet. Do you really need a bomb when you have direct access to the brain? So what kind of events would you need to have a situation where the obvious drawbacks haven't been explored? Maybe a society where the advancement of technology has so far outstripped the explorations of its applications that ignorance was truly bliss? Okay, so I had to put in an alien invasion to kickstart the premise, but that was just one of the possibilities.

The Paths of Magick
Credits: Story by Xcaliburnt. Cover Art by @Bervolart. Magick, the power to bend the laws of reality. All because of a mystical substance known as mana. Mages follow the Paths to achieve power, for there is no more addictive chase. Each Path winds and twists, forcing mages through the flames of adversity and challenge. Though the operative word is "path", the reality is far less straightforward. Instead of a road, Paths are like the branches of world trees, erupting into the heavens, intertwining, and ending in sharp snaps. Only the strongest reach the sky. There are several Paths, and many Ways to walk them—variations of the same Path, and like the stars, they are endless. Magick is the sacred flame that scours the fat, rendering the truest self. Superfluous flesh melting away to show the skeleton of one's being. A chance for ascension—apotheosis. Though not every mage works to godhood, if they survive long enough, It is inescapable. Witness the lives of those that tread the knife's edge of self-destruction. Each one intertwined in their search for answers, revenge, and, most of all: power. These individuals have all lost something precious—irreplaceable—and In search of filling the void left behind, they have taken up the mantle of a mage. Per aspera ad astra. Ad mortem vel divinitatis. (Through adversity to the stars. To death or divinity.) There is no consistent release schedule except my consistent inconsistency. Besides, there’s like a thousand pages worth of content, how can—you already read it? Goddamn. Oh, and there is a very long hiatus between volumes as I intend to edit and rewrite a lot. What to Expect: This story is progression fantasy, so expect a healthy dose of training. It's also heavy on slice of life, and it isn't entirely overarching-plot-driven. Expect characters to live their lives, and not always be on some quest to save the world. There's a lot of magic theory and discussion about it in the story. So, if you don't like impromptu lessons on sorcerous theory by traveling monster slayers, this might not be for you. But if you do like it, rejoice! For there is a lot of it. This is also heavy on prose, purple as a bruised eye. I use outdated, uneccesarily collegiate-level terms and play around with the writing style just for the heck of it. I find it fun to wax and wane poetic, and that might grate on you—I don’t plan to change this aspect of the Paths much if at all. Onto the viewer discretion is advised parts: This is grim-dark/ grim-heart. Take the tags seriously. There will be combat scenes that are brutal and horrifying. Fights to the death tend to be. This is a tale about medieval mercenaries (quite literal killers for hire), man-eating monsters, and eldritch gods beyond the material plane. Beside that, there will be traumatic events that are best left unread. I do not detail certain acts I find heinous enough, instead leaving some parts unwritten but still alludded to if not outright stated; there is simply no graphic narration thereof. This is not for the faint of heart.
