《Trek Into The Woods》Chapter 8

“Wait, what?” I say mildly loud. I turn back and look up at the sky. No, there’s only a few small clouds in the sky, that couldn’t of been lightning. I scan a bit of the town, the people outside were pointing to the east. (There’s nothing there) turning back to the horizon I was just looking at a moment ago. That’s when I saw it, the end of the world.
Off far in the distance, barely able to see it. Was a strange cloud, something that doesn’t form normally. A mushroom cloud, no wait, several of them morphing together. How many are there? Just how many did they set off? And then, a weird bluish wave rippled through the sky, and everything around me died. All the cars lost control. Every light exploded. Cars started to crash into everything. Explosions erupted all over town. I ducked behind a pillar by the door to try and avoid any debris. Finally I noticed a burning sensation on my wrist, I looked down and saw my watch smoking. I unwrapped it from my wrist and flung it to the ground, leaving a red circle mark on my skin. More explosion shot off, screams were let out. I hovered my hands by my ears, “What the heck is going on!?” I shouted. Then above ever sound came a rumbling from over my head. I stood up from behind the pillar and looked up to the sky. The sky was on fire. No, there was a sea of burning rock, a sea of meteors crashing down.
I stood there in awe and disbelief. The rocks falling from the sky ranged in size, from grains of sand to as big as a small car. The grains of sand was like burning rain, as if to shower down on people. The people out in the open started to scream in agony as the burning rain pierced their skin. As the bigger sized rocked fell, exploding as they touched the ground, the bigger they were the more damage they did. As I stood there, frozen watching the town get destroyed, as hand grabbed my shoulder, I jumped. I looked over my shoulder to a woman that was in a lab coat, “you should probably get inside, follow me” she turned and went through the doors. I turned and followed her, willing from my already shocked brain. We went through a series of doors and caught up with a few other people, we descended a few stair cases and came up to a steel door. We went down one more set of stairs and finally came to another heavy looking door. The woman had a few people help her with the wheel and she spoke, “this is a nuclear bomb shelter equipped with the newest set of standards” we walked into a long white hallway to another smaller door. She opened it and had everyone get into the very small room and shut the door. There was a very loud beep and a light flashed green, “good no one is contaminated, follow me” she opened the other door and went in. “Hold on, did you say contaminated?” someone in the group said. “Yes, but to be more exact, no one got any radiation on them” everyone looked puzzled, “So those clouds were what I thought they were” I muttered. “Yes, approximately 4:01 several atomic bombs, or as some people say it Nukes, went off over the Atlantic ocean, and we came in here just in case any radiation travels over!” she had to start raising her voice as people started to shout at her. “What do you mean nukes?” “What was that in the sky?” “What is happening?” “When can we get out?” multiple people started to ask question. She raised in a calming manner,”Shhhh, I will answer all of your questions soon, so in the meantime, please take a seat and get comfortable we could be in here for a while” she motioned to some of the chairs, beds, and couches laid out around the room.

There is 7 people in the shelter including me. The woman in the lab coat looked to be about 40, were as the other people looked around my age, I assume they were students from this college who happened to be around the area. “Alright, now that you’ve settled down a bit… First off, my name is Dr. Lisa Bendar but you can call me Lisa. A few years ago, scientist discovered a cluster of asteroids coming towards earth, but it wasn’t until a few months ago that they could determine the trajectory of these asteroids. They found out that the center of impact was Kansas with the possibility of branching out to the whole of America.” “What!? How come the government didn’t say anything about this!?” Someone yelled at Lisa, she sighed “Please don’t yell at me, it wasn’t my decision” Another person yelled again “You could’ve made an announcement, leak the information, or something!”. “Guys calm down a bit” I rub my temple trying to take everything in, everyone looked at me, “There’s multiple reasons why leaking the information would end badly, one she would go to prison for treason or even possibly killed for whistle-blowing, it would either be taken as a joke or create mass panic, which is one of the reasons the government didn’t say anything to the public in the first place. Etc. etc. Please go on.” I say, Lisa nods and continues “As state, there are various reasons why leaking the info wouldn’t help in the grand scheme of things. Anyway, once the government found out about this they made a plan to try and stop this from happening, and that would include nuclear bombs. But this, as the news stated, was over the Atlantic ocean, so there’s a minimal chance that radiation will reach here. But with the meteors getting past the bombs, there’s an even bigger chance that the radiation was carried with meteors.” “So then that blue wave in the sky was the electro pulse?” I ask, Lisa looked at me puzzled, “Interesting, I didn’t see that, I guess that’s why all the electronics in the school died… Hmm, strange, I wonder if one of the bombs generated it.” she pondered for a moment and then shrugged. “ Hold on. Hold on. How do you know all of this?” Someone asked, “Oh yeah, that part, though people shouldn’t know this so don’t go telling everyone, but I’m a scientist under the CDC” she says, “CDC? Then what are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be somewhere bigger, more fancy or something?” they ask again. “Since the possibility, and now fact, of the meteors getting through and crashing. The government has set many scientist all over the country and world in the case of the meteors bringing an unknown to the population” “An Unknown?” I ask, “Yes, some type of germ or parasite that we haven’t seen before” she says giving a mad scientist smirk. “Anymore questions?” she asks looking at the group, “um, so, when are we allowed to get out of here” another person asks meekly, “Ah, yes that, don’t worry i’m not detaining you, I just don’t want you to get sick from radiation. I’ll keep you in here overnight for precaution, but if there’s no sign of radiation outside then i’ll open the door in the morning. And before you ask how I will know, we have sensors outside and that information goes to the computer over in the corner” she points to the corner with a high tech looking computer “so relax and get some sleep, since it’s a no go till morning. Food is in storage, i’ll go pick out some stuff for us here quick.” she opens a door near the kitchen looking area and before long comes out with a box of food. I eat my snack, drink some water, and lay down on one of the couches before anyone takes it.

AV Online was just a flash in the pan—a harsh, experimental land which lost most of its players in mere weeks. Only the dedicated few remained, carving out their destinies in corners of the vast abandoned world. Lily Quinn wasn't one of them. With a career worth millions in the esports world, she didn't have time for a game like Avo—but when an exclusive beta test for the new version showed up on her doorstep, she couldn't say no… as much as she wanted to. Literally hooked into the simulation, Lily reluctantly entered a world beyond anything she'd ever dreamed of. Accompanied by seven other beta testers desperate to save their beloved game, Lily dives into a vibrant, beautiful world, where mystery and adventure waits around every corner. Despite her reservations, Lily finds a joyful escape in Avo, shattering her cold, hollow reality. It was just a game though… until the group discovered they couldn't log out. Trapped in a game with no rules, and surrounded by cutthroat players eager to kill for a quick windfall, Lily and her ragged band have no choice but to fight their way out, or die in a game that has turned all too real. Hi there! I'm setting off on yet another adventure, come join me :3 Unusually for me, there's only one perspective this time, and it's quite a bit more action-oriented than I usually write. Don't worry, though: everything's still as character-driven as always, and I never get tired of writing dialogue. Just to acknowledge it up front: this story is heavily inspired by EVE Online and the many stories generated by that world. However, since this is a fantasy setting, not sci-fi, don't expect any real parallels. Chapter publish rate for this one will be whenever I write them, as with Epilogue. I don't expect to move as fast here though, since it's not for NaNo. The plan is chapters somewhere in the 4k-5k range, and hopefully frequently. The Last Science takes priority as always though. Special thanks to Reaver and Ace Arriande for pushing me to get this going, and to all my fellow writers whom I've stolen from been inspired by. You're all wonderful people and I love you Quick reminder: Patrons get to read ahead of what's published! Also, try my other works: The Last Science — A Tale of Modern Magic Epilogue — A Post-Fantasy Psychodrama What are you still doing on the synopsis? Get to reading!
