《Trek Into The Woods》Chapter 9

“Ha. Ha. Ha.” I laugh out loud sarcastically, “oh you, your so funny” I wave my hand forward at the book I’m reading. It’s been around 4 months since the meteors crashed into earth. 4 months since the start of this apocalypse, and 1 month since this hell. The hell of being alone, no one around. No one to talk to, no one to chat with, to joke with, to eat with. The only ones around is me, me and these books to keep me company. Since being alone for a month, with no one else to talk to, I admit I’ve gone a bit crazy. Talking to yourself and to books for a whole month can do that to a person. I’ve started to give myself ear aches, were from my endless blabber or from the hours of the deafening silence. Though there would be a few random sounds off in the distance from those creatures roaming around, enjoying themselves. But other than that, silence, not even the hum of fans around the building. Ever electronic was taken out from the emp that blasted out from one of the bombs that tried, yet failed, to destroy the meteors before they smashed up the ground outside. Those giants, knocking down the buildings around town without a care in the world.
It’s been a month since Lisa got infected, and died RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. I tried to stop her before she pulled that trigger, but she had master locked me out of the quarantined room. All I could do was stand there while she gave me her farewell from behind that thick glass. And all I could do was watch her final moments, her final breathe. She pulled the trigger, ending the infection inside of her and my only connection to humanity. I’m not sure how she got infected, not that it really matters anymore. But one day, while having one of our chats, she jolted with a bit a pain and out came the blood from her eyes and nose. I immediately went to try and help her, but she stopped me before I got to close. I followed her to the lab and watched as she locked herself into that airtight room. I sat there with her all day, waiting, hoping that this time would be different. That she would somehow beat it. But sure enough the rash and boils started to display all across her body. And all I could do was watch her final moments, watch as she died in peace. She was the last friend I had since the start of this living hell.

“Aaaaaaaaaarg, I’m so bored” I yell. “Something. Anything. I just need something to happen.” I yell again. I throw the book I just got done with into the smallish pile of books by the couch I was laying on. The same one I was on before everything happened. I swung my legs off the couch and got up. I head to the restrooms to relieve myself of my bladder and thirsty throat. The college was the only building left standing in this town, the only place I’m able to stay in. All the other buildings were either destroyed from the meteors or from the extremely strong creatures that roamed the streets at night. They get into fights with each other or just throw tantrums and knock around the buildings and rumble around the place, not sure why, territorial disputes I guess. But they knocked down the rest of the building other than the college. They haven’t touched the college because after we found out about the effectiveness of UV against the creatures, we set up a bunch of UV lamps around the building. Why did we have UV lamps? Well Lisa said the government stored them in the bomb shelters to clean the radiated water after the nuclear blasts. I don’t know if that’s the full truth but at least we didn’t have to worry about the creatures at night.
I walk back to my couch and lay down again. I grab a medical book from the stack of books I have set by the couch to read, I have quite the selection here with nothing to do but read. “Let’s see… ooo, first aid. Might be good to touch up on this. Though not sure how long I’m going to last. What do you think? Aye, don’t give me that snarky attitude.” I start talking to the books, I did say I had gone a little crazy. “Cleaning wounds, burns, poisoning, CPR… your quite extensive aren’t you.” I give half a grin. I lay there reading the book for an hour, every so often notice my sleepy eyes slipping into their sleep. It’s only close to noon, but the only things I’ve been doing these days were reading and sleeping away. Slowly my eyes finally closes and the book gracefully finds my face, I drift into a lovely nap.

Raddle… Raddle… Jingle… “mmm” I moan. More raddling… I pull the book off my face and squint at the figure that’s before me. I groggily peer towards the haloed figure. An angel shaking, no, nervously pointing a gun at me. “Uh, Am I finally dead?” I grumble.

A (Not So) Simple Fetch Quest
Oh great hero! The evil Demon Lord has once again arisen to terrorise our lands, and we have summoned you to save our people! No, we don't want you to fight the demon lord! Of course not; we're the good guys! What sort of good guys kidnap people from other worlds and force them to take part in wars that have nothing to do with them? That would just be plain evil! We'd be no better than the demons! Katie, after her summoning by an excessively loud mage suddenly takes an unexpected twist, is sent off on a simple fetch quest, with a promise that she'll be back home in five minutes at most. She doesn't even need to leave the building. Alas, when a goddess' blessing causes her wish for an actual adventure to be taken rather more literally than she expected, she finds herself lost in a dark cave, far away from the sword she was supposed to acquire and far too close to a population of giant bugs. Still, at least she wished her life wasn't in any danger. Among other things. Be careful what you wish for. You might just get it. This is a dark litRPG adventure, both in terms of Katie accidentally wishing all the lights out, and also in that she loses as often as she wins, often with horrific and disturbing consequences. Luckily, Katie isn’t the sort of person to let a mere grizzly death or two get her down, and is prepared to try, try and try again to get her hands on the holy sword and finally complete her ‘simple’ fetch quest. Or perhaps—with a few resistance skills under her nightie—she might even come to enjoy losing. Not that she’d ever consider forgoing revenge, even if she did. I’ve ticked all the content warning checkboxes for this one. There’s no explicit sexual content, but there are enough references to justify the warning. Profanity happens rarely, but Katie isn’t averse to swearing when she gets particularly angry. As for gore/trauma, it doesn’t get much worse than the first few chapters, but there will be occasional chapters that have extra content warnings.
