《Escaping the Box》Chapter 5: Part 2

Leylin woke up to someone shaking him. Looking around, he saw Emily kneeling next to him with a look of worry.
"Are you ok?" she asked.
Leylin jumped up.
"Yeah, I'm fine. What happened to the lich? One moment, I was shooting fireballs at him, and now, I'm here," he said, perplexed.
"The lich is dead. Maybe you exhausted yourself so much that you blacked out."
"Maybe...." Leylin recalled one other time that he blacked out. The situation was similar. One moment, he was facing danger, and the next, the danger was gone.
"Now that the lich is dead, you need to redeem the reward. To do that, you need to go to the City of Viribus. It's a few days journey from here." Emily said, handing him the note for the Bounty. "Once you get there, go to the main Bounty Office. You will need some proof that you killed the lich, so I had the mayor write a letter vouching for you while I was out. He owes me a few favors for helping out townspeople in need every now and then."
"Thanks! I don't have to go immediately though right?"
"I guess not.... Don't you need money?"
"Yeah, but it isn't urgent. I can stay here until I finish my work right?"
A bit surprised, Emily nodded, "You've been slacking though. You only have a few finished and its been an entire day."
Emily got an odd enjoyment from teasing him. He had an odd way of making people feel comfortable. 'Maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all, courting him,' she thought.
"Ah, I just haven't gotten used to it yet," Leylin said sheepishly.
Giggling, Emily said, "It's fine, it's fine," In her mind she added, 'Take as much time as you need.'

"Come on, I'll cook us some dinner, free of charge," she said.
Leaving out of the room, Leylin observed the inn more. Outside of the room, there was a hallway with roughly ten doors. The floor of the hallway had a luxurious red runner from end to end. On the walls, there were painted portraits of what he assumed was Emily's family.
Following behind her, Leylin asked, "Where is your family?"
Pausing a brief moment before continuing, Emily said, "I was adopted, and this is my adoptive Mother's family. She was an old maid, so she really could have been my grandmother, but I didn't care. Her name was Patty, which is why this place is called 'Patty's Inn'. She took me in one day when she noticed me begging on the street."
Arriving in the kitchen, Leylin helped Emily prepare the food for cooking.
Continuing, Emily said, "She told me she always wanted kids, but she never got married because she devoted all of her time to this inn. She used to say 'I don't need a husband. I'm married to this building, and it protects and provides for me more than any man could.' It was just a joke she used to tell, though. I'm not really sure why she never got married, but she probably had her reasons."
"What happened to her? Why isn't she here?"
"I don't know. She just disappeared one day. Most people think she is dead.... Anyway, after she was gone, I took care of the inn. I wanted to protect what she loved, but sometimes, I wonder if it's even worth it."
Leylin noticed that Emily sounded a little bitter. Unsure how to comfort her, he continued slicing beef for dinner.
"Anyway, let's talk about something less depressing. What do you plan to do with your reward?" she asked.

"I'm not sure. I need to find a way to get back home, but I'm just taking things one step at a time. I suppose I will need a steady income firstly. I don't really have a lot of skills aside from magic," Leylin said.
"You're a mage?" Emily was surprised.
Becoming a mage required talent and a lot of knowledge about the mechanics of mana. She assumed he was some kind of fighter because he was able to travel safely through Petram, which was riddled with monsters due to the war with the Orcs. She was surprised that he was a mage because a majority of them came from Noble familes. Raising one required a highly expensive education. Even with training, there was no guarantee that the mage would be talented because manipulating mana was highly intuitive.
"Are you a noble??" Emily asked.

Children of Danu, People of Skill Book 1. (LitRPG/Gamelit)
Hi all, this is my first attempt at fiction ever. I'm sure it's awful, first attempts at new things usually are. Hopefully you can find something you like in it. I had a great deal of fun writing it. It's a basic Litrpg/Game, God sends you to a new world to do their bidding plot. I Know I did too much telling and not enough showing. I'm working on that. The underlying system is one haven't seen or done much. a full Point Buy system, like Gurps, Champions or the Hero system. After writing it a while, I see why folks don't do it. The record keeping is tedious. And once you start doing math in subsequent chapters, you can't go back and add more action, just because you dread redoing all the math. I've got about 80k words written in two "books" on the novel so far. I'm going to edit chapters and try to drop a couple a week till it's finished. Hopefully that will work for folks. I need to punch up the amount of action. I'll be working on that as well. Thanks, Cal-P.S> The cover art is one of the two CIrce Paintings By Waterhouse.

Dip$h!+s in Space
An eccentric comedy novel (that thinks it's a TV show) about space, and the Dipsh!+s that end up stranded in it. This hyper-self-aware comedy of stupid proportions, centers around Captain William T Lawg (no relation) and his adventures as a guy who managed to afford a refitted soft-top ice-cream truck, in space. Explore the universe with his trusty crew of valiant randos. Marley, the tech-bro, stoner spacebunny, who just wants to get away from his home world and the bullies it harbors. Duffy, the plump and sassy female mechanic, who has had every job in existence totaling far more years than possible. Roy, the frigging fabulous, flamboyant android, and former spy…or possibly current spy. (dun dun, daaaa!) And lastly, but certainly leastly, that other chick the captain keeps trying to bang. Ride with the crew of the notorious Tast-E-Chill, to a world of wonder that a lot of other space travelers have already been before, but probably not Lawg, so it's still exciting. This satirical joke on itself and every sci-fi trope ever to exist, will be sure to either thrill you or disappoint you, because COMEDY…IS…SUBJECTIVE! With a crew of 3-10 and an IQ of also probably 3-10, The captain putters along to uncharted lands, where history, loot, drama, innuendos of the sexual verity, and various Technicolor hoes shall surely be waiting, usually with some form of trap. Each season brings new and interesting crewmen, like: Menace: the adorable genderless frog-child-thing with the heart of gold and the dialogue vocabulary of a slightly trained parrot. Greg: the 8 foot tall, ancient, thermonuclear, semi-retired alien overlord who just wants to prove he still has a purpose…and also to rule the galaxy. Izzy: a 3rd generation, age-reversed reboot, accidental clone of her own mother/sister/older self, who happens to be Greg's daughter-in-law…and much, much more. Prepare yourself for shallow adventure, moderately-to high offensive dialogue, and overwhelmingly childish scenarios. Tag along as the crew battles, fierce enemies, lack of food and survival tape, and occasionally their own incompetence. Teen Romance, current politics, subtlety, dignity, this sucker has none of those, and it darn well knows it. Raise the sails and grab the rails as a bunch of dipsh!+s find themselves...IN SPACE. (Roll dramatic tapering credits, to royalty free trumpet music)

Shadow Falls
If you wanted to protect someone you loved, how far would you go, and what would you be willing to sacrifice? This question is at the core of this emotional rollercoaster of the book, Shadow Falls: the Rise and Fall of Erida VanIsle. This book emerged from four years of collaborative storytelling centering on the main character, Erida VanIsle, written by author Myra VanIsle. In this book, VanIsle goes beyond the events that led to Erida's sacrifice and explores forty-five years of the cost she paid to protect the sister she loved more than life itself. Shadow Falls explores the family tragedy which led to the separation of two sisters on completely different paths polar opposite of each other. While Erida set upon a path of darkness and power, Myra set out to be a beacon of light and hope bringing justice and peace to others. Be warned, the story VanIsle tells is dark and not easy, because you can't have the light without the dark.
