《Student Council Help Desk》04: Christian's Theory of Happiness

After that meeting of our club activities, I went home after Alessia since she always have this white SUV fetching her after-school and I went back to the dorms, somehow earlier than I expected that I would go home since I would go on a grocery every Thursdays.
And for tonight, I wasn’t assigned preparing dinner and Hans isn’t around since he would be taking a closing shift tonight, as well as Roxanne since her classes would end around seven in the evening.
I sat on the lobby to watch the events happening outside.
While I was watching, my smartphone is ringing and took my smartphone with an unknown number,
“Hello, who’s this?”
“Ah, erm Yuuta Nishimura?”
I heard a familiar voice but with a semi-robotic tone from my smartphone,
“Ah, Christian?” I sat on my bed responding to the call, “Where did you get my number?”
“Hmm, I called Mrs. Garcia and I got your number from her.”
“Ah, I see,” I said rolling my eyes away from the TV.
I didn’t expect to go all in his way to get my phone number this late. Hope it would be worth my time.
“So, what made you go all in the way to get my phone number?”
“I’m asking you about the event tomorrow.”
I shook my head, I know there’s a school event tomorrow but I cannot point it out.
“Hmm, what of it I cannot recall it.”
Probably I wasn’t paying attention earlier or I already forgot about it. But I recall it being marked at the official calendar of activities. I might grab myself a copy from Christian,
Aside from the things I accidentally forget, there are some things I want to forget as well.
“Ahh, What’s wrong? Hey dude!”
Christian shouted the latter part which I took my smartphone off my right ear. Can this idiot realize he’s on the phone, not in real life?
“Could you please stop shouting over the phone,” I said while rubbing my right ear to ease the pain in my eardrums,

“I thought you’re asleep. You weren’t talking for like a couple of minutes,”
I took a sigh, “No, I was a bit tired from the house chores,”
“Our Student Meeting and Orientation. Well, basically it’s the season when the clubs are open for new members.”
New members huh, I haven’t considered one since everyone looked like that everyone doesn’t want to associate with me, I doubt that anyone will join this club.
“How about our club?”
“Apparently I cannot get new members without the permission from Mrs. Garcia.”
I tilted my head as I heard about the club,
“But why?”
“Our club is a special case,” He said, “I need some sort of approval from Mrs. Garcia.”
“What kind of approval?”
“I don’t know,” Christian paused and took a breath, “But what I know is she usually checks her students before putting them in this club.”
I’m seeing a pattern over here. Alessia wasn’t that popular but looks like she’s been hated due to the fact almost no one talks to her, and I got the unfair treatment by everyone.
Or it’s just my assumption that problem children are being put in the Student Council Help Desk forcing them to ‘help’ other students. Apparently, I feel like I am a prisoner on my case.
“I heard that some of the members she place in this club are problem children usually.”
“Not surprising that the Student Council Vice President is a problem child,” I said sarcastically while trying to sit comfortably on the sofa,
“Ha ha ha,” He laughed sarcastically, “Well that’s something from the loner Yuuta Nishimura.”
I sighed, “I guess that’s to be expected when everyone in class doesn’t want to be associated with me.”
I guess that’s what I get for being born as a part of a failed Yakuza linage that the curse of all the future generations of that lineage will bear children with sharp and intimidating eyes would go on for eternity. That is something that is not my fault, to begin with.

Or this whole thing that I having the worst eye feature on my family is just that I was cursed to have this dead fish eyes since birth.
“So, what made you think that you should start a club like that?”
I asked to shift the topic to a different direction and focus on his intents. I know he helped me secure for a club for my program as an exchange student, so I might ask him some insights on why did he decide to establish such a club like that.
“Heh, You know the feeling of helping someone in need?”
“Okay… So why are you doing this?”
“You know it’s fun making people smile with everything you can offer.” He paused, “I mean you can bring up all your resources for the sake of making some certain person happy.”
Christian said in a calming manner with the streaks sounding it being robotic. Makes me remind of a carefree manga character that would do whatever it takes to make the world smile.
“Do you expect them to do something in return or something?”
“No actually, I don’t need any form of compensation to make someone happy, even that it cost my own happiness to make them happy.”
I know with that mindset to help someone in need and making them happy unconditionally is beyond me. I know there will be people genuinely need the help they need in order to overcome challenges in his life, but this would be dangerous as others might use him for his kindness.
I couldn’t understand how far he could go just to help others.
“So you mean to say that you’ll go out of your way to help others in need even that it cost you something precious?”
“Hmm, definitely. My goal is to make the school body happy no matter what.”
He said in full determination while I still hesitate on agreeing on his goal. It seemed unrealistic and dangerous since some people can use him in any way and throw him out afterward. However, looking at the end goal to make the student body happy and satisfied for the whole year would grant him the title as a Saint.
But in reality, he would be forgotten after our graduation and we leave the school.
“If you believe on that, I won’t argue with that. But be careful those who would take advantage of your goal and bring you down.”
Christian laughed it off after what I said earlier, “Hmm, hmm. I guess it cannot be helped that you have that kind of outlook in life.” He paused as I heard a small burst of wind implying that he stood up, “Try making someone happy. You’ll see what I mean.”
“But how?”
“You’re on your own figuring that out…”
I heard an old feminine coming from Christian’s line,
“See ya tomorrow at class,”
And all the sudden, the call ended and I stood up from the sofa and went to the bathroom to wash my face before hitting the sack. I was still thinking about what Christian said earlier on the call still rolls on my mind on how he would do anything just to make the student body happy.
The goal was lofty realistically but it might be possible if he was ultra-popular. However, he might be popular but not unrealistically popular.
Those thoughts still swirl on my mind before hitting the sack and try to think about Christian’s Theory of making someone happy. If I cannot make a single person happy, then making the whole school population happy would be as impossible as pigs would genetically grow wings and fly.

Malheur aux vaincus - Short stories
I am a reader, not a writer. But in the spirit of contributing to the trove of texts present here, I hope to share some short stories that I wrote: two in French in a Roman Fantasy setting ; and the rest in English: one inspired by manichean webnovels, another one... difficult to classify as a fiction, a little flight of fancy about the 'What if?' game, and last even two poems.

The Kodoku Game
In Japanese folklore, there once existed an ancient technique among alchemists for harvesting the strongest poison known to man. A poison so vicious, so horrendous, that a single drop could incapacitate an entire nation of humans, several times over. A poison so intense that a single drop could turn the tides of a war on its head. As potent as it appeared however, this poison could be harvested from the blood of a single insect alone- an insect the alchemist’s called the ‘Kodoku’. As lucrative as was attaining this poison however, the problem lied in identifying this insect- its appearance, shape and size changed from region to region and from continent to continent. Sometimes it took the appearance of a ladybug and other times a horned-beetle. In order to determine the identity of this special insect the alchemists came up with an ingenious method. They created an impregnable jar of clay out of the best sandstone they could find and placed hundreds of different insects into the same jar. The jar was made with such great mastery that it allowed no insects to escape and allowed no objects to enter. The laws of nature dictated that the insects would remain together in the jar forever. However, it turned out that as time went on, the insects’ hunger for food and power caused them to turn against each other- one insect ate another until only one remained. This sole insect contained a poison that far surpassed that of all the others and became stronger as it ate more and more insects. The alchemists at this point had succeeded in identifying the Kodoku and could extract it’s poison as long as they continued to feed it regularly. Although this folklore ends here, the actual story does not. One day, as the alchemists cheered in joy of having identified the Kodoku they so eagerly wanted, they forgot to close the lid on the very jar that was considered to be completely impregnable. This small gap was just large enough for the Kodoku inside to crawl out. Famished from not having been fed for weeks, the Kodoku ended up eating the very alchemists that nourished its growth until not even the bones remained. Yet, the Kodoku’s hunger didn’t seem to subside in the slightest. So it traveled to the next village and began eating whatever it could find there. Its poison made it unparalleled in strength and slowly but surely it began to dwindle down the population of the entire city. Yet its hunger only continued to grow. So it traveled to the next city over and ate all it could there. Very soon, the Kodoku couldn’t find any more food to eat. There was no one left to eat and no one left to spectate. So it stood there, by itself pondering what possibly was left to eat that could satiate its hunger. But there was one thing left that Kodoku realized it had never eaten. Itself.
