《Fox Squadron》Chapter 6 - Eric

As far as Eric knew this was the first time in thirteen years that had been in the same place together. He had been vaguely aware of the first contact event with the Terrans four years ago. Most Frayins knew a little about it. It was hard to hide the fact that the previously thought dead heir to the empire wasn't actually dead and had a younger sister. What wasn't widely known was that the two Princesses were currently exiled until they were of age for a breach of first contact protocol among other crimes and were currently being sheltered by the Terrans, as part of an agreement.
Orin looked between Michael and the Princesses. "Wait, you have sisters?" The cute little brown haired Terran girl at the table just laughed as we all looked at Orin. "Yes, my father put them into hiding after our mother was killed."
"How did he do that l? I thought that nobles were all solid colored." The cute girl's question made sense. Even he didn't know how one would hide a member of the Imperial family let alone the heir to the Imperial throne. Scarlet colored eyes were something you would only see in a member of the Imperial family. "It's not too hard when everyone hides your identity from you." Mia said in a disconcerted way. "Also helps when you are secretly given a drug that changes your eye color." Said the little sister Melissa finishing the explanation. "Oh perhaps we should all introduce ourselves. That is if you are done hitting on your sister." Melissa put a little extra emphasis on the last part before gesturing for everyone to sit down.
The cute Terran give turned out to be Evy. The short mousy looking girl had a circular device with a holo emitter on top. She was a little quiet, really only talking when someone talked to her. Though periodically she would lean forward and whisper something to the strange device in front of her. She seemed very protective of the device for some reason. For some reason Eric found everything about her to be fascinating. It was at this point that he realized he was referring to her as cute.

Before he could work why the holo emitter on the device activated, revealing a motherly looking woman "Sorry to interrupt but we will need to leave soon if we are to make it to our meeting with Lieutenant Colson." The figure said with a matter of fact tone. "It is? I must have lost track of the time." She then moved to get up and take the device with her before suddenly stopping. "Oh I'm sorry I forgot to introduce you." She said to the figure.
She then turned around to address the table. "This is my best friend Avalon." Avalon gave a short bow before addressing them. "It is a pleasure to meet you all. I am Avalon AI Number zero thirteen and Evy's personal AI. I am sorry we can not speak longer but we have an important meeting to go to." With that Evy and Avalon bid them farewell and left, leaving them all with a few hundred questions apiece.
There was a moment where everyone looked at the Princesses for an explanation. Only to see that they were staring at the Teal haired Frayin girl who's name Eric had somehow missed. "Helena what was that all about?" Mia asked, looking very confused. Helena, now the center of attention, slowly finished siping from her tea and gently placed it back on the table. She then looked back at Princess Mia and then spoke as casually as one might talk about the weather. "Oh, didn't I mention Evy had one of the twenty-two advanced Terran AIs."
While everyone else yelled at Helena Eric tried to make sense of what he had just heard. Before now Nayomi was the only one of these AIs that he had encountered. But just from that he knew that they were insanely powerful. In the three weeks since meeting her she had broken into the main computer of a Frayin Carrier, shut down the life support of a bulk freighter that had forcefully tried to escape from paying docking fees and, as far as he could tell, was constantly monitoring the entire station. "So the question then came to why had the Terrans given a young civilian girl one of the most powerful AIs in existence?"

Eric hadn't expected anyone at the table to be able to answer. But the question wasn't really for them. His com chirped before Nyomi's voice came over it. "Terran AIs are made using brain scans. This causes the AI to have the same moral and ideological beliefs as that person the scan comes from. This also causes the AI to become attached to the person who they were based off of. As such only those who fully pass the Aegis exam are allowed to have an AI. The test is nearly impossible so anyone who wants to take it can and any who pass it gets a personal AI." As usual Nayomi's long winded explanation made sense.
Tiara cocked her head just as Nayomi finished her explanation. "OK, but then why would Evy need to meet with Lieutenant Colson?" Nayomi gave an uncharacteristically long pause. At the same time Orin looked between the rest of them. Terrans were not traditionally very expressive by Frayin standards, but he looked visibly confused. "Wait, do you guys really not know?" Before anyone could answer his question Nayomi came back over their coms. "Colson was the lead scientist of the team that created Me and my sibling as well as what you would call the Terran power and transpace drive."
Michael looked around the table "um, Colson appears to be considerably more important than we originally thought." There was no argument from any of them. Mia's ears twitched then she looked at them. "That might be why he was on the exploration ship that crashed on Cadia."
As soon as she mentioned Cadia, Tiara and Michael's attention was locked on the two Princesses. "Wait, you were on Cadia?" Michael asked. "Yees" She hesitated slightly from the sheer intensity coming from the two. Eric quickly found the air to be stifling, it was almost hard to breathe. For Helena it was hard. She was panting from the effort to keep breathing her head almost laid onto the table. He had seen Nobles put out such a presser before but this was ridiculous. Every Frayin in the room was now looking towards them. It was just that hard to ignore and this was just from Michael alone. Mia and the emperor must be able to incapacitate people like this. Then there were the few sparks of scarlet flame that were now floating around the Prince. Never in his wildest dreams did he think he would be in a position to see the sacred flames pulled from the cascade itself. The very flame that only the Imperial family could produce. It was unnerving how Tiara and the Princess seemed to be able to completely ignore this overwhelming presser.
Tiara spoke and somehow for a moment it broke the presser. “When?” it was all she asked but for some reason the word itself demanded an answer. Mia mirly locked eyes with Tiara and then he was hit with a wave of pressure that made the one before feel like it had come from a child while this from an adult. But it was Melissa who answered the question. “All our lives in the city of Galthas. Until four years ago that is.” with that Tiara blinked then looked at Mia. Without warning she quickly clapped her hand together, hard enough to make a loud sharp sound. For a brief moment all attention was drawn to that spot where she had clapped her hand together. “Mia, you need to calm down. Now!”
Eric didn't understand what she meant at first. At least until he looked at Mia. Around her were several orbes of scarlet fire. Before Tiara had said anything none of them had even noticed them forming. As soon as Mia’s attention broke the four orbs vanished as if they had never been. Even while they all sat confused over what had just happened Tiara stood up and looked at Michael. “You are going to teach them how to control their spirit fire. BEFORE someone gets hurt.” with that she turned on her heels and retreated from the table. The Prince and Princesses blinked at each other until Helena gave a gasp of air as she could finally breathe again and Eric finally reminded himself to take another breath. These three were terrifying.

Nero Zero
Monsters plagued the lands for too long. No matter if one had fangs, beak, teeth, skin, fur, or feather, or was tall, stout, or diminutive, the people suffered. Until the Gadgeteers came with a device that could allow people to fight back. Powered by one's own magical power, feeding off of monster Essence, the Arbitrium bracer turned the tables. It also changed society. Strength of one's level cap was all that mattered. The strongest were Kings and Emperors. The weak or those too poor to afford the marvelous device, destitute. And so it has been for millennia. All that mattered was one's level cap. High, low, a fate decided the moment the strange contraption came alive. Too high and you were a threat to those interested in keeping the status quo, a weed to be nipped before it could grow and take root. Too low and you were nobody, fated to be a bit more than a simple farmer. What if someone, somewhere, came up with a zero for their level cap? Unable to use Essence, unable to level up. On all of recorded history, it never happened. Until it did. In a small village of fur-less and tail-less ape-beastkin, a boy found out he was uniquely handicapped. Nero's level cap was Zero. But he'd never let that stop him from reaching his goals. ------------------------------------------------ All stories have already been told. We merely reuse elements from them. From Joseph Campbell's Monomith to Stephen King's advice, and that encyclopedia of tropes you've visited, fiction has been dissected and reassembled countless times. One will surely find elements inspired on other works here. Just like cooking from basic ingredients, the recipe and presentation is what really matter. This is a fantasy adventure, of someone that goes from a zero to a slightly bigger zero. It will have romance but no harem. Cruelty but with hope dimly shining ahead. Lightweight where it can be, heavy where it must. Thanks for reading. Cover Credits (The cover is CC-BY-NC-SA): Steampunk Spider Bracer, by Daniel Proulx.
