《The Titanic Fanatic》Chapter 6 - Side Effects

John saw lightning and heard booming thunder outside as he was seeing through the ceiling. He smiled. Zeus seemed to have felt the threat on a subconscious level at the very least. John turned his attention to the exit of this place. He looked for the door with his mind, spreading his consciousness across the room. At least, he thought that’s what he was doing, but he wasn’t sure. He wasn’t sure about his newfound powers existing until a few minutes ago anyway.
Regardless, John was able to feel a warping of space, for a lack of a better phrase, near one of the corners of the room, which went into the darkness. John tried to look through the darkness and see the exit, but he wasn't able to.
It seems that I can sometimes see through walls, but I can't see in the dark?I don't even know anymore... John thought. He started towards the direction of the warped space which he assumed was the way out, but remembered something.
I forgot Rax was still here, He thought.
"Rax! Come on, I found the exit!" John yelled. His voice echoed all around the dark room, but there was no answer.
Just then, John realized that when he was looking for the exit using his new sensing power of sorts, he didn't sense Rax. To be safe he reached out with his essence again, but to no avail. Rax was nowhere to be felt.
Oh well, John thought, I tried. He probably already found the exit and left, and if he's somehow still here, he'll find his way out eventually. Using this logic, he made his way over to the warped space across the very large, dark, and slightly damp chamber without any hesitation. As he walked through this space, which John assumed was a portal, his surroundings shifted and he was momentarily blinded by the sun's glare. After a minute, he looked around, and he was back in school outside the cafeteria which was now, surprisingly, locked; as if it hadn't just been opened recently.

Hundreds of students were bustling around and John was feeling very... different. Not because he had powers and these people didn't, no, nothing like that. John was just purely overwhelmed by this sixth sense that he aqcuired, and he was able to sense every single one of these students, teachers, staff, and whoever or whatever else was among a radius of about thirty or so meters around him.
John quickly sat down on a nearby unoccupied table and grabbed his head in his hands. Aaaarrrghh, this is the worst headache of my life!!! Goddamnit, even my brain can't handle this sensory overload! I need a way to turn this off! he thought. It seemed that somehow, his consciousness spread out and resonated with all life forms and inanimate objects around him, and all of this... awareness of who or what was around him came rushing back into his brain as nervous signals.
He didn't know how much time passed as he shut out everything in order to deal with the pain, yet slowly but surely he was able to tone it down, like a lever with sensitivity levels. He did not get used to it or anything like that: he actually had to lower the sensory input to his brain, or John didn't even know what would happen to him. At this point, when his sensitivity reached a certain level, he started paying just a little attention to his other senses. He felt tapping on his shoulder.
"-cuse me...? John... are you ok? Hello? Can you hear me... ? Should I call the nurse?" he heard a voice to his right side, and by the time she finished speaking, he was relatively fine, at least comparing to what was happening to him before.
John looked up and saw a brunette girl leaning next to him, one hand on the table and the other poking him.

"Oh, hey Daisy," he said drowsily, "I was just taking a nap."
"A nap? You, taking a nap?" she said incredulously. "I've known you for eight years now and you have never taken a nap! John, tell me what happened. Is something bothering you?" she asked.
"No, nothing at all. Everything's fine, Daisy. I'm just getting a bit worn out with all the work, that's all. I'm thinking of dropping some of my activities," he said naturally, because this statement was actually one hundred percent true. He just wasn't telling her the real reason he was "taking a nap".
I can't tell her what's really going on. What if she tells someone else? She probably won't if I explain it to her fully, but she still wouldn't believe me. It's not like I can really prove it yet. It's not worth the risk. I can't tell anyone. They'd think I'm crazy, and send me to a psych ward or asylum or some shit! No, I have to figure this out myself, John thought.
He smiled at Daisy. Daisy looked relieved. "Oh, okay. I thought you were like dying or something!" she laughed.
Just then, the ever annoying bell rang and Daisy got up. "Alright John. Tell me if you need anything, ok?" she said, walking away.
"I'll be sure to do that." John said, and he felt slightly guilty for lying to his childhood friend, but it dissappeared as soon as he thought of how much worse it could have been if he told her the truth.
