《The Strongest Soul》Chapter 5: Guaranteed Death

The growls and snarls of beasts kept resounding behind Kain as he dashed with all he had forward. Even though he was going at his fastest possible speed the low roars seemed to be getting closer and closer. It was as if death was counting down for him.
Kain had a bit of endurance since he lived on this planet and had to survive day to day. Therefore he wasn’t immediately caught by whatever beast was chasing him at the moment. However, even though he had some endurance, that didn’t mean he had the speed to get away. About half a kilometer into the run, Kain could hear the heavy sound of paws slamming into the hard ground and dead leaves that were littered about. Although he didn’t want to, his body instinctively turned his head slightly behind him to look at what was chasing him.
As soon as he caught sight of what was behind him, Kain’s pupils severely constricted and he quickly turned his head back and shot forward with even greater speed that came out of nowhere. His heart was fiercely palpitating with fear and his chest became drenched with cold sweat.
He saw a large two headed black wolf about five hundred meters behind him. It was so large that Kain could make it out even though it was so far behind him. It had vicious saber teeth and claws that sunk into the ground and ripped the earth apart. Everywhere it passed by trees would surely fall to the ground. The forest couldn’t possibly resist against a beast of this size and stature.
As soon as this beast saw Kain turn to look at it, its crimson eyes focused heavily on his body and it let out a ear piercing roar that caused the ground to tremble. The roar caused Kain to cough up a mouthful of blood. His face went pale and his heart clenched tightly.

The sight of the beast alone didn’t make Kain feel like this but when he looked into those crimson eyes he saw multiple terrible visions. In one vision he saw the two headed wolf rip him apart, one head having the upper half of him and the other head having the lower half. In another vision he saw the wolf piercing through his body with its claws and while it slowly gnawed on him until he died from blood loss and pain. Kain saw many visions but they all ended in the same way... death.
The result of seeing countless visions of his own self dying in multiple horrible ways made Kain feel hopeless, as if running away would get him nowhere. Fear gripped his heart and he couldn’t help but slow down his pace. In his mind he was thinking he had some hope of running away, but his body didn’t think he had even a slim chance.
Soon, Kain stopped running. In fact he stopped moving completely. He turned around and watched as the large two headed wolf slowed its pace down and trotted along toward him. It was as if it knew that it had Kain hooked and therefore didn’t need to expend too much energy.
Kain felt as if his life was now over, as if all of the work and pain that he went through was for nothing. He wouldn’t be able to live after this. He wouldn’t be able to figure out what that soul thingy was talking about. And he wouldn’t be able to see his family.
Wait! At this thought Kain’s eyes became cold. His only wish was to see his family. He had worked hard just to do that and now he was going to give up? Just like that? No.
The large two headed wolf soon was upon Kain. Kain looked coldly at the wolf and its crimson eyes. As he looked in the eyes he would constantly see new visions of him dying horrible deaths at the hands of this beast. He stood there watching the visions as he was… swallowed up by the beast.

Epoch: An NPC's Tale
Epoch is a slow-burn LitRPG/Gamelit novel that tells the story of Luke, later named Lucius—a natural inhabitant of the game-like realm of Elyssia where thousands upon thousands of detached, virtually unkillable entities known as the Players were suddenly introduced right after the dusk of the magnificent Age of Heroes. Shortly after the Players arrived, the balance of power in Elyssia instantly shifted. Kingdoms fell, wars were waged, alliances between races were made, and Lucius, after ten years of training in captivity, found himself being used as a pawn in a prophecy that he had no intention to fulfill. With aspirations and desires of his own, Lucius must find a way to cautiously adapt to the drastic changes in the very foundations of the realm after being sent 300 years into a future that was forever altered by the outcome of the war that his captors had lost and the Players won in a victory that resounded throughout the ages, all for a terrible price. Author's Note As an avid fan of the LitRPG genre myself, I wrote this novel with character progression, heavy Gamelit elements, and some degree of world-building in mind. If you like these, please feel free to give this novel a try. Oh, and the MC is also an NPC, in a sense. And wait, isn't this also an isekai story? Well, it's all a bit complicated to explain here. Maybe you should start reading now?

This ambition, however, is not without opposition. Most followers side with one school or another, believing it is superior in nature. This conflict dates back to the very beginning of civilization itself, where it is believed by both sides that their gods descended from the heavens, bestowing upon them the knowledge that would bring the world into a new age. And though some took great interest in their differences, others would seek to convert each other through any means necessary. That being the case, The High council, leaders of Verun, had made the necessary preparations to handle threats and attempt diplomacy between the remaining opposers. Talented volunteers were hand chosen to be among the military, tasked with protecting the nation from both internal and external threats. And although non-biological creations have improved quality of life, they are not yet capable of replacing the military. The necessary research and development for such a thing was thought to be decades away, until Councilman Eranor encountered an anomaly in his facility…
