《Through the Vortex》11: Space Training Begins

There were a few attempts at more cheerful topics, but overall no one talked much on the rest of the flight. Everyone had too much to think about. Howard was especially conflicted. The very same person who had dragged him into this was the one who was in the worst condition. He didn’t feel any satisfaction seeing that, though. If anything, it was chilling to see the eternal peacock lose its prideful feathers like this.
The private jet landed somewhere in a desert area right next to medieval style castle that had a giant rocket… Hold on, was that the NASA base Sanders had been talking about? The medieval atmosphere was shoved together with the impressive technological display.
“Hey Sanders, was this place designed by the same person as the last one?” Miranda asked when they disembarked.
“It was, why?” Sanders replied.
“I thought so,” Miranda said, “It has the same twisted taste.”
“I think it looks dramatic,” Selina approved, nodding at the building as if she was proud.
“You didn’t design this, did you?” Miranda asked warily, not wanting to offend one of her idols.
“Not at all. I don’t do that kind of thing,” Selina assured her, “but it does have a striking figure. No one could miss it.”
James frowned. “As a secret base, isn’t it supposed to have the opposite effect?”
Howard agreed with James on this one.
“This isn’t about secrecy, it is about style,” Leon argued, “It’s not like it is going to have much relevance after our mission, right?”
“True,” Sanders agreed.
Once they reached the door, several servants greeted them in medieval attire. “Welcome home Master Sanders.”
Sanders froze. “Sorry guys, I forgot to specify that was just an opening day event. You are normal employees now.”

“Tch, how boring.”
Howard looked for whoever said that, but it was hard to tell, other than it was one of the workers. Actually, one other thing bothered him.
“There was an opening day?” he asked.
“Doesn’t every decent workplace have an opening day?” Sanders asked, “Kind of like a moving party.”
“Excuse me, but since we are finally here, shouldn’t we get things settled so we can start training?” Natalie demanded.
“My apologies,” Sanders told her, suddenly more polite, “We will start with the tour and then everyone will split off into groups of what it is most important for you to learn. Your rooms have already been arranged for you.”
The tour started. Despite the outside, the inside looked as neat as one would expect from a space station. There was everything from flight training to a Zero-G replicator to a mall-like cafeteria.
They each got their own personal bedrooms, but the beds they would be sleeping on were definitely cots.
“By the way, what are each of your favorite colors?” Sanders asked once they reached the room.
“Royal blue!” Selina announced at the same time as Jonathan shouted, “Rainbow tye-dye!”
Sanders wrote those down.
“Why do you need to know?” Natlie asked.
“So I can have your sleeping bags made, unless you want them all to be the same, dull and boring,” Sanders explained.
“Purple,” Natalie sighed.
“I like red,” Miranda said.
“Black and brown are both fine,” James said.
“Gold,” Leon said.
“Yellow for you then,” Sanders told Leon, “And Howard?”
“...Dark green,” he replied.
“Makes sense,” James nodded.
“Why did you only say that for Howard?” Selina asked.
“You were too obvious, and he is probably missing nature,” James replied, gesturing to Selina’s blue highlights.

She touched her hair. “Touche.”
“I will get your sleeping bags ordered,” Sanders promised, “The experts here can help you with your training in the meantime. I already informed them of your skillsets and positions.”
“What are our skillsets and positions?” James asked.
“You are security,” Sanders told him, “You have a good head on your shoulders, so you should help me keep everyone in line. Miranda will be in charge of cafeteria and storage. Natalie and Jonathan will be in charge of navigation and basic controls. Selina will be taking care of maintenance, and Leon will be learning a bit of everything just in case.”
“What about me?” Howard asked.
“Moral support?”
As usual, Howard was just an awkward add-on, but why was Selina in charge of maintenance? Perhaps it had something to do with her career as an illusionist or something else Howard did not know about her.

Portals to other worlds. Siblings with a secret. A world in need of magic. Zach is haunted, scarred by his time spent in a place that might as well have been hell. Zara, his sister, even more so. After years of torturous experiments, they were finally rescued. But the years since then haven’t been easy. Both siblings just want a break, something to take their minds from the past. The portals that appeared all over the world a hundred years ago are the key. The reason behind years of captivity now holds the answer to their problems. For the second time in his life, Zack awakens as a ‘Traveler’. Someone possessing the ability to pass through these portals and venture into the mystic realms. What begins as a fresh start soon attracts the attention of nobles and those with less savory intentions. When you have known nothing but distrust for those in power, what would you do to remain in control of your life? I will be uploading new chapters on Tuesday and Saturday each week at 4pm Mountain Standard Time. (The story has been described as X-men meets Narnia. Which while not entirely accurate, is still a fun way of looking at it.) (Note: As with my other stories, this one focuses more on the characters than on constant action. The Lite-LitRPG and Gamelit elements are introduced into the story gradually.) Author's Note: This is my raw, mostly unedited text. I am using RR to test out this story as I'm writing it to get a feel for how the published and edited copy will be received. Certain sections of the story will be changed or added to when I publish it as well. Again from Scratch Saga: Izmittor Unchained
If someone precious to you needed your help, would you extend it? Would you still do it if it costs you your peace and perhaps even your life? For Tercius, a man mysteriously reborn nearly thirteen years ago, there was only one answer to both questions. Feeling compelled, he sets out to journey to the northern Sogea and its infamous Western Izmittor mountain range, a natural stronghold of sky tearing mountains and deep canyons. Legends about the place abounded, but he knew without a doubt that the hidden valleys, rushing rivers, thick forests, and desolate landscapes hid powerful predators, the likes of which stalk the harsh terrains for an easy source of meat and bones. The many natural dangers of Western Izmittor would be hard enough to navigate safely for a lone traveler, but to make matters worse Tercius had enemies in the heights of Western Izmittor, humans and spirits who would see him dead if they ever learned of his true connection to the Pyramid of Tergaron and the Society of the Magi. To make things even more difficult, he also had to ensure that the true extent of his own Innate Skills remained hidden, for if the prying eyes of the world fell on him and his many secrets came to light, then he would never again know a day of peace. Can one reborn man manage to keep his secrets and still succeed in doing what his conscience compels him to? Will he have to choose one over the other? And can he do any of it without reigniting the sparks of a planetary war the likes of which had not been seen in millennia? Follow Tercius’ story and find out! *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** This story is a continuation of Again from Scratch, a story of mine also posted on RR. Reading it is NOT necessary to read this story, but for anyone who wants to get a little bit more background, here is a link: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/38803/again-from-scratch Again from Scratch was my first journey into writing and I have taken all I learned from that and started writing Again from Scratch Saga, a continuation that is almost stand alone.
