《Nandemonogatari: The Story of Something Else》Chapter 35 - The Story of Invasions

The group rushes towards the gate of the school, Yuudai being the first to make it to the iron gate. The Paranormies look through the bars to find the same old buildings and familiar scenery they’ve become accustomed to over their time at Miyafuji.
“Hey, why in the hell is this closed!? It’s not curfew yet!” Katsuki shakes the bars with frustration, Yuuri and Cerys coming over to help her try to open the gates.
Yuudai looks at the school grounds at then back at Akina. “I thought you said you felt ‘demonic energy’. Why does the school the same as always? Where are the swirling clouds and red sky or anything like that?”
Behind Yuudai, Cerys manages to unlatch the gate and open it up. As soon as she does Kokoro tries to fly in, but is stopped midair as if it flew into a glass door.
“Huh? What…” Yuuri reaches her hand out to touch where Kokoro stopped, feeling only a smooth, glass-like feeling at her fingertips. “Is… Is this glass?” she asks, rubbing her hand against it.
“That’s not any kinda glass you’re used ta, that’s a magicah barriah.” Mari says, walking up behind her. “Could be anything on tha other side of it… which is all tha more reason we need tha break it down!” she says, reaching between her cleavage.
“How do we do that?” Akina asks curiously.
“With one of these!” Mari pulls out a talisman, faintly glowing in her hand. “Yah just charge it laike so…” she continues as she holds it to her chest, causing it to glow more. “Then put it about… heah!” she slaps it onto the barrier a bit above where Yuuri’s hand is. “Aaaand… presto!” She turns and looks at the others with a grin as the talisman flashes brightly, the barrier becoming visible and burning away from where she placed it. It melts until there’s a person-sized entry hole.
Inside the barrier is a much different view than the outside. Instead of a calm school ground they see a purple haze, with dead trees and a red moon serving as it’s backdrop. “What… I don’t get this at all!” Yuudai says as he walks closer to it.
Saito looks at Yuudai with a smirk. “It’s not the swirling clouds and red sky you wanted, but it’s close enough don’t you think?”
Mari butts back in, standing next to the new entrance. “It’s tha real state of Miyafuji raight now, Big Guy. Tha normal lookin’ one was a pitchah on a magical wall. Right now, tha’s a large presence of evil corruptin’ tha whole campus.”
Katsuki steps in front of the hole. “That’s paranormal enough for me. Plus… Kirika could be in there, scared, hurt, even…” She pauses, before taking a breath and raising her head again. “But nevermind that. If she’s in here, we’ll find her, and we’ll save her!”
Yuuri runs up to Katsuki’s side “I’m right beside you, Katsuki! We restarted this club just for something like this, and we’re not gonna back down now!”
The two turn around, looking at the others. “Are you all ready?”
“What if we’re not?” Cerys asks.
“Too bad. You’re coming too.”
“Damn, I thought you’d let me off the hook for this one.” She shrugs, then looks up. “May as well get this over with.” With that, everyone gathers up and steps into the true Miyafuji campus.
As they step through the portal, Mari snaps her fingers, collapsing the portal behind them. “That’s it, we’re stuck in here now. That was my last barriah talisman.” Mari says, looking back at the former entrance. “No turnin’ back.”

Saito yells out, “Wait, what!?!? Then how the hell do we get out!?”
“We just beat tha demon makin’ this barriah, obviously.”
“Makes sense to me,” Cerys answers while the rest nods in agreement.
“What do you mean makes sense?” Satio looks at everyone in shock.
“Shut up Saito we were doing that anyway,” Akina snaps at him.
The group begins slowly walking towards the school, looking around at the twisted state of their school. Bats fly through withered trees, the ground sizzles with heated pools of magma replacing the gardens. The area is overrun with tiny demons, running around and destroying anything they can get their hands on. One turns its head and notices the group, and instantly starts heading towards them while brandishing a knife.
“Stand back, I’ll handle this.” Akina says, stepping forward and bracing her feet against the ground. The imp leaps at Akina, rearing its knife back to strike. Akina smirks and with a quick jab, turns it into dust mid-air in one strike. The knife clatters to the ground, where Akina picks it up.
“These things aren’t so tough. Compared to me at least. This could be useful for one of you though.” She turns to the group, holding the knife by its handle. “I’m not one for tools such as these.”
Yuuri looks at the knife with a hint of familiarity. “Looks like a kitchen knife. I think I can make use of that. Thanks.” She takes it, holding it with a tight grip. Before they can continue into the building, they see another large object flying at them. A burst of loud laughter accompanies it as it falls just behind them.
“Get back, it’s-” Katsuki says before stopping. “It’s… a trash can?” She looks up at where the trashcan came from and notices the tall figure standing by the door, kicking whatever is in sight and laughing “...Raidou?”
Everyone looks towards the figure that is currently doing flips down the stairs and yelling loudly. The club members aside from Mari groans as they realize who it is. “Hey, Raidou! Is that you?” Katsuki yells.
“Who dares call- Wait, is that…” Raidou messes up his landing and crashes onto the stairs. Leaping up off the ground, he stands in front of the Paranormies. “Hey, if it isn’t my old friends. What the hell are you doing here?” he says with a smile.
“‘What the hell are we doing’? What is Hell doing here?” Katsuki looks at him with a tinge of anger in her voice.
“Huh? What do you mean?”
“This is our school.” Katsuki replies with no emotion in her voice.
“Is it?” He looks back at the building, then turns back. “Oh, it is! I haven’t seen this place in forever. I didn’t even recognize it when I was tearing it down!” He says with a cackle.
Katsuki slaps him and gets in his face. “Why are you tearing down our school!?” she yells.
“Hey, some force pulled me out of my home while I was in the middle of a game and compelled me to destroy. You know, normal demon stuff. Didn’t even get to save!,” he says with a mock huff.
“Well, cut it out!” She says pointedly.
“Okay, okay, fine. Just because you asked nicely.” He relaxes his pose.
Yuuri walks up to him and speaks up in a worried tone. “Have you seen Kirika around here? She ran off just before this happened, and we haven’t been able to find her.”

Raidou shrugs. “I haven’t seen her, if she’s here then either she’s causing it or she’s being tortured by other demon dudes.” His face straightens up, looking back at the school.
Katsuki turns his head back around with her hand. “You’re gonna help us look for her… RIGHT?”
“Of course. I’m the big hero here. I’m going to save her and you guys, because that's why I’m here.” He puffs his chest out and doesn’t notice everyone walking into the school without him. “Hey guys wait up!” He shouts as he runs behind them.
They enter the school expecting to see a lot of chaos, but find… not much of anything. The hallways look the same despite the eerie light they’re bathed in, and the classrooms they pass by look as orderly as ever. “This… this doesn’t look weird at all.” Yuudai says. “Isn’t that too weird?”
Mari quickly covers his mouth from behind. Saito turns to him as well, whispering, “Shh, we don’t wanna give ourselves away, do we?”
Cerys looks around. “It is oddly normal here, but I need to grab something from the clubroom in case it stops being normal.”
“We’ll all go with you just to keep you safe, Cerys!” Yuuri smiles at the smaller girl.
“Huh? Well I guess so.” She gives Yuuri a confused look. “Stop smiling like that it’s weird with the backdrop.” Yuuri frowns.
The group moves through the school carefully but quickly, keeping an eye out for any potential danger. They make it to the clubroom without any trouble, bunching up behind Yuuri who’s standing by the doorway with her knife. “Thankfully, our clubroom’s on the first floor… we could have got ambushed on the stairs or something.” She looks over at the others. “So, are you ready to go in?” The others verbally agree, and Yuuri opens the door.
Yuuri peeks into the room and gasps at what she sees, causing everyone to crowd around the door. Three large humanoid demons are ransacking the room, putting holes in the wall and emptying desks everywhere. Mari steps forward first, yelling, “Hey, demons! Stop ransackin’ mah new home!” The demons turn their heads towards the sound, looking for a moment before they simultaneously jump towards the doorway.
“Hey, you assholes! I called this room, stop breaking my property!” Raidou yells as he jumps forward, launching his fist directly into one of the demon’s face. Yuuri joins the assault, holding the knife out and charging at another of the demons, plunging it into its stomach.
The third charges at Yuuri, but is stopped in its tracks by a large pink laser penetrating directly through its heart. “Hah, didn’t know I could shoot beams didja!?” Mari continues pointing her wand at its smouldering remains. The others in the group gather inside the room, looking down at what’s left.
Yuuri looks up at Mari, shocked. “Hey, you have a wand? W-where have you been hiding it?”
As Mari starts to move her hand towards her bosom once again, Katsuki grabs her shoulder. “I don’t think we actually need to know, Mari.”
“Hey, these demons aren’t too scary, are they? They just look like normal dudes but bigger and red.” Yuudai smirks.
“And horny.”
“P-probably not that part, Mari.”
Mari points to the curved horns jutting out of their heads. “Nah, definitely horny.”
Yuudai chuckles at her horrible joke. “Well, whether it was horny or horny, they aren’t much of a threat anymore.”
Before their eyes the damage from the attack begins disappearing from the demons. They begin to stand back up and the rest of the group stares at Yuudai. “What? How would I know they could revive?” Mari waps him on the back of the head, and everyone gets ready for a second charge.
“Yuudai! Protect the others!” Yuuri says as she readies the knife again, slashing at the demon in front of her.
Katsuki and Cerys look at each other as Yuudai jumps in front of them. “I guess that makes us the others, then.”
“Yep. Must be because we don’t have weapons.” Cerys mutters while she shrugs. “Hey, we can trust you right?,” she shouts over the sound of the fight.
Yuudai looks back with a smirk. “Yeah, I gotcha!”
Mari pulls her wand back again, once more charging it with pink mana. “Y’all must be some heartless bastahds if that didn’t kill ya, so this time ahm aimin’ for tha head!” She blasts it at the demon, true to her word sending it right towards it’s head.
As soon as she releases Yuuri screams, having been grabbed by her demon. “Shit!” Saito says as he runs in from behind the two, sliding under Mari’s beam, and unleashes his scythe before slamming the pole into the side of the demon Yuuri is fighting, allowing her to run away. He uses the inside of the scythe to cut the demon’s feet off, crashing it to the ground before standing up himself.
Behind him Mari’s lazer hits true, destroying the demon’s head. This time, the body turns into dust and floats away into the air. She turns to Saito, who’s now stradling the demon with his scythe cradling the demon’s neck. “Saito! Destroy tha head ta kill tha demon!”
“You don’t gotta tell me twice!” Saito quickly decapitates his foe in one swift move, soon falling to the floor as its body disappears below him.
Yuuri helps him up with a slight blush. “Y-you know, I could have done that!”
Saito brushes himself off and looks at her with a light smirk. “Sure, but a girl shouldn’t have to do that kind of dirty work.” Yuuri’s blush intensifies, but before Saito can continue the two are interrupted by the yell of the last demon, making an unholy sound as it rushes by them directly at Yuudai.
“It’s coming for us big guy.” Cerys says. “If you don’t stop him and we get ran over, I’m kicking your ass when we become ghosts.”
Yuudai braces himself to catch the demon’s charge. “Don’t worry, we ain’t becoming ghosts just yet!” The demon rushes up to him and Yuudai grabs it by the horns, getting pushed back by the initial force before holding his own against it’s intense momentum.
“Hold him still, Yuudai.” Akina walks up next to him, squaring up to it’s form. The demon doesn’t notice her in its berzerk rush at Yuudai, trying to break through him to get to the two defenseless members behind him. It also doesn’t notice when Akina delivers a blow straight to his head, dissolving it into dust so fast Yuudai falls forward.
Katsuki steps forward and helps him back to his feet as the others confirm the area is clear. “Seems like there aren’t any more demons here.” Yuuri says. “We don’t know when more will show up though, so we better not take too much time getting our stuff.”
Yuudai moves in to grab his baseball bat from a corner of the room, while Cerys digs into the closet and pulls out gloves with pointed claws fastened to the tips. “Ahah, there they are.”
Katsuki’s eyes widen. “Uh, what the hell are those?”
“Modified mage gloves, my mom used staves but I don’t so I made some adjustments.”
“Those are claws.”
“I did say modified.”
The others search their bags for anything useful, pocketing what they find. When Katsuki finishes she turns around to leave and spots the pool of blood the demon Saito cleaved left behind. “I wonder if…” she says as she stares at the red puddle.
“What are ya thinkin’, Red?” Mari asks.
“Well, I was able to use other people’s blood before, so I wonder if this stuff will work too.”
Mari wrinkles up her face. “Oh, you’re one of those blood mages aren’t ya?”
Katsuki pouts. “Not much worse than a chaos mage. Anyways move over a bit.” Mari does so, not wanting to get in the way. Katsuki opens up her bag and pulls out her lunchbox. She looks at the red stains and moves her hand to the side. The blood sits still for a moment, then ripples spread out.
“Sick.” She steps back, moving as much of it as she can inside the storage container. “I’ll have to burn this when we’re done here.”
“Pres, what are you thinking?” Akina looks perplexed.
“I’m not just gonna keep this stuff following around behind me, I’ll throw it whenever we actually get into a fight.”
“And do what exactly?”
“Well I made a ball of blood once, and stabbed Miyu with stuff once, so I think I could throw something sharp like a crescent.”
“Sure sure, just don’t touch me with the backsplatter.”
Yuuri waits at the door. “Is that it? Let’s go before more of those things find us.” The club picks up their things and leaves their clubroom, possibly for the last time. Yuuri shuts the door behind them. “It’s probably not safe to just keep walking out in the open like this.” She says, looking down each end of the hallway.
“Ya mean we weren’t just gonna take tha maintenance route?” Mari asks in surprise.
The others look at her, Katsuki inquiring, “Maintenance route?”
“Yeah, used it all tha time ta sneak ‘round tha school. Ya’ll didn’t know ‘bout it?” Mari responds.
“No, we just went through the halls, like normal people.” Cerys spits out.
“Hay now, yew shouldn’t be so mean to tha one who’s gonna getcha to tha end safely, ya sassy child.”
Yuudai steps between the two, holding his arms out to both of them. “Now, now, let’s save the fighting for the hellspawn.” He turns his head to Mari. “You sure this is safer than taking the main way?”
“Yeh, I never got caught once in there.” She grins proudly “Even by tha maintenance people!”
The group looks at each other, then Katsuki looks back at Mari. “Then as official club business, I ask that you lead us through this school!”
Mari grins even more. “Sure thang, Pres. Follow me!” she says before moving forward, the others following her deeper into the heart of the devil’s newest school.
