《The Devourer》Chapter 1: Prologue

I feel my body losing all its warmth.
Slowly all the blood is leaving me and it's getting dark.
I use all my strength to open my eyes and keep breathing, but the broken rips in my lungs prevent me from doing that.
I am dying and there is no saving me, that much I know.
Still, all things considered, I am glad it's me who is dying and not her.
As I keep my eyes on her, all I feel is regret.
Regret that I won’t see her anymore.
Regret that I won’t hold her anymore.
Regret that the only one I consider close to my heart will be alone after I am gone.
As I am lost in my thoughts, she comes close to me and stands there in silence.
I take a last look at her face and close my eyes.
Then there is nothing.
There is no meeting god, no getting judged for your good and bad deeds, no going to heaven or hell.
It is just me and the darkness, where I'll probably stay forever or until I lose my consciousness and feel nothing.
Yes, that is how it was supposed to be……
2 hours before the accident
I open my eyes and see the same old ceiling that I see every day.
As I get out of my bed, I feel something soft on my leg.
I see what it is and already feel like getting up was worth it.
I pick her up and give her a light hug.
“Good Morning Selena,” I said with a big smile on my face.
Selena was my cat.
She was a stray I picked up during one of my night strolls.
Whenever I had time I liked going out at night when there was no one and it was all quiet.
It made me feel like there was no one else present but me in the world.
Like any other day, it was my usual stroll when I saw a cat. It was sitting on a tree branch looking at me.

I would have completely missed it if not for its yellowish-golden feline eyes glowing in the dark. The cat was as black as night itself. You would not see it in the dark if not for her glowing eyes.
The cat was looking at me with those unusually beautiful eyes and that was what got my attention.
I went near the tree thinking that it might be stuck and needed help. So I went there and did what any person who does not own a cat but has seen enough videos and memes of them to know what you should do.
With a big smile, I said “psst psst ”.
There was no response but I could see the confusion in the cat’s eyes. It might have been my imagination but still, I felt kind of embarrassed for trying that out and left as soon as possible.
As I got to my apartment and was about to close my door, I see those yellowish-golden eyes on me again.
The cat was outside my door looking at me with the same curious gaze as before.
After some time had passed, the cat was still there so I asked it “Would you like to come in?”.
And as if it understood me, it came in.
Since then a year has passed and Selena is still with me.
To this day I still think that taking in Selena was the best thing that had ever happened to me. My same old lonely life got fun and interesting because of her.
After playing with her for a bit I went to get ready for work. It was not that big of a job but still, it paid well.
I was a tester for new software and games. Usually, a tester would not get paid much but since I was very good and efficient at my job they paid me quite a bit.
I wear my casual clothes and start to make breakfast for both of us. After eating and saying goodbye I was about to leave in a hurry when I hear a “meow”.

Selena was there pointing at my ID_card with her paw.
“Oh shoot I almost forgot my ID again,” I said with an embarrassed smile.
“Thank you Selena as always,” I say and kiss her on her forehead.
Selena was smart, super smart.
Whenever I talked to her she would listen to me as she understood everything. Sometimes when I am reading web novels, she would also read them with me.
There were a lot of times, where if not for her I would have had I earful from my boss.
I leave the apartment in a hurry as today was going to be a busy day.
Today I would be testing a new game that was supposed to come out soon. I was supposed to do what I do best and check if any serious bugs would affect gameplay.
I had some data and codes that I took home to formulate some tests that could identify the bug if there were any. I had made a clear list of the things that needed testing and that would save me a lot of time.
As I was taking out my ID to scan it for entry, I noticed that the flash drive that had the testing data was missing.
Thinking of all the work that I would have to do from scratch and the extra time that I would have to put in, made my head hurt.
Feeling down I was going to enter the building when something caught my eye. There was a black cat cross the street coming toward me. She was holding something in her mouth.
My mood did a 180 and I was super happy. I walked a little towards Selena and waited for her to cross the road.
She was a smart cat, she waited for the signal to turn red and started walking with the rest of the people crossing the road.
Everyone was crossing the road when a truck was coming toward them. The truck was speeding and had no intention of stopping.
“Get out of the way!!!” someone yelled.
When I took I closer look I saw the driver was asleep.
My heart dropped and I yelled at the top of my lungs for Selena to run back.
As she was running back, someone from the crowd hit her head while ran in panic.
She fell and was, unfortunately, perfectly aligned with the truck’s tires. So the truck would not pass over her.
Seeing that I ran towards her without thinking about anything. My mind was filled with a single thing and that was to save her.
When I got near her, I had just about enough time to pick her up and throw her towards a lady that was near.
But I did not have enough time to move out of the way and the truck hit me with its full momentum.
The Present
I opened my eyes to see that I was in a forest. There were big trees that made it difficult for the sunlight to reach the ground.
There was some kind of chirping but it could not have been from birds because it was too loud.
I try and get up and notice that I had no clothes on. I try and cover myself while looking left and right in panic.
As I was doing this, out of nowhere a screen pops ups in front of my face. I was surprised and fell on my butt.
Trying to calm my heart I read the message on the screen.
[Welcome to my World]
[You can do anything with my powers on the condition that you also do the Main Quest]
“What the F*ck,” I said in complete disbelief.

The Kodoku Game
In Japanese folklore, there once existed an ancient technique among alchemists for harvesting the strongest poison known to man. A poison so vicious, so horrendous, that a single drop could incapacitate an entire nation of humans, several times over. A poison so intense that a single drop could turn the tides of a war on its head. As potent as it appeared however, this poison could be harvested from the blood of a single insect alone- an insect the alchemist’s called the ‘Kodoku’. As lucrative as was attaining this poison however, the problem lied in identifying this insect- its appearance, shape and size changed from region to region and from continent to continent. Sometimes it took the appearance of a ladybug and other times a horned-beetle. In order to determine the identity of this special insect the alchemists came up with an ingenious method. They created an impregnable jar of clay out of the best sandstone they could find and placed hundreds of different insects into the same jar. The jar was made with such great mastery that it allowed no insects to escape and allowed no objects to enter. The laws of nature dictated that the insects would remain together in the jar forever. However, it turned out that as time went on, the insects’ hunger for food and power caused them to turn against each other- one insect ate another until only one remained. This sole insect contained a poison that far surpassed that of all the others and became stronger as it ate more and more insects. The alchemists at this point had succeeded in identifying the Kodoku and could extract it’s poison as long as they continued to feed it regularly. Although this folklore ends here, the actual story does not. One day, as the alchemists cheered in joy of having identified the Kodoku they so eagerly wanted, they forgot to close the lid on the very jar that was considered to be completely impregnable. This small gap was just large enough for the Kodoku inside to crawl out. Famished from not having been fed for weeks, the Kodoku ended up eating the very alchemists that nourished its growth until not even the bones remained. Yet, the Kodoku’s hunger didn’t seem to subside in the slightest. So it traveled to the next village and began eating whatever it could find there. Its poison made it unparalleled in strength and slowly but surely it began to dwindle down the population of the entire city. Yet its hunger only continued to grow. So it traveled to the next city over and ate all it could there. Very soon, the Kodoku couldn’t find any more food to eat. There was no one left to eat and no one left to spectate. So it stood there, by itself pondering what possibly was left to eat that could satiate its hunger. But there was one thing left that Kodoku realized it had never eaten. Itself.
