Four years had passed since Akilah and Adara moved into their current home. Akilah was now 16 years and Adara had turned 19 and reached adulthood. Adara and Akilah had managed to create a peaceful life for themselves.
Adara being the social butterfly she was liked going out to socialize and speak to the townspeople. Even if they technically did not need to buy anything, they still went to town for shopping. For safety reasons Akilah always used magic to disguise both as young men. 'Better safe than sorry' she liked to think.
However, one thing that didn't change no matter how much Akilah tried, her golden eye color. It was simply impossible for her change her eye color. Akilah had assumed but this was a mark from devil's curse, she couldn't get rid of it. Instead, she opted to cover it up with an eye patch, or really anything that was readily available for her to use as a cover up.
Akilah not being able to change her eye color somewhat expected. But what came as a shock to her was the fact that she couldn't change Adara's eye color either. At first, she thought that there was something wrong with her spell. Therefore, she then changed her tactic and instead used the spell on animals, and it work the animals change their eye color.
Well, when it came to Adara no matter how much she tried she could not change her eye color. She feared that this could only mean one thing, the issue didn't lie within the spells but Adara. Akilah feared that this might have something to do with what Ladybug had told her about connecting life threads.
She assumed that Adara's eye color had something to do with that connection, that her eye color would once again attract him. Even if that were to be the case, Akilah didn't fear it, because this time she was prepared to protect. Akilah was always cautious and, on her guard, when they went out. But faith has a funny way of dealing with things, no matter how cautious she was the connecting life threads had already began pulling.

On a rainy day when the town and roads were emptier than regularly. Adara and Akilah decided to take a trip downtown, since it had gone weeks since they had visited, and rainy days with less people was always a plus. Therefore on these days, against Akilah’s advice, Adara had opted out of disguising herself as a man, as she felt freer going out as herself. However, Akilah still disguised herself, as she felt it would be safer if at least one of them were a man. As they had thought the town was idle and Adara only visited a bread store before they began going home.
They decided to take a shortcut thorough the woods and that's when Akilah heard some loud noise further away from then and into the woods, as her magical abilities had heightened her senses, meaning she could both see and hear from a distance better than the average human. Nevertheless Akilah decided to ignore it as it could mean nothing but trouble. However as the walking further into the woods the sounds became more clearer to Akilah and also became audible to Adara.
Adara stopped and asked “Wait, do you hear that?”
“What are you talking about?” Akilah replied feigning ignorance.
“It sounds like a ruckus”
“Okay…Well then we should probably stay away”
“But that’s not all. I think I’m hearing a woman’s voice”
Akilah looked at Adara annoyed, she could in fact hear something from the distance. It was a very silent voice, a female voice. Adara turned to Akilah who now looked visibly worried.
"Aki, you can hear it now, right" she asked.
"Yes, I heard it, someone is calling for help" Akilah replied.

Flashback: Siren Song
The year is 1969. Yancy Lazarus—bluesman, gambler, future world-class mage and fix-it man—is just a dumb, unlucky kid serving with the 3rd Battalion 3rd Marines in Vietnam. With just a few weeks left to go until Yancy gets shipped back to the States, he’s just trying to keep his head down and avoid a body bag—no mean feat in Nam. But when his squad is tasked with conducting a routine patrol deep in enemy territory, everything goes to nine kinds of hell, and he quickly sees his chances at survival slipping away. When the radio operators start to pick up some funky, dirty ol’ blues all the way out in the backcountry, it’s a nice change of pace. At least until the men in Yancy’s squad start losing their minds, turning on each other with murderous intent as the music works its deadly power within them. Convinced it’s some kind of new psychological warfare initiative, the squad leader forces the men to push deeper and deeper into the Vietnamese jungle, obsessed with locating the music’s source. What they find, however, isn’t some new technology, but an ancient spirit awoken by the terrible war. Even worse, the music is changing Yancy too, awakening something buried inside of him. Only one thing is certain, nothing is ever going to be the same.See how it all began … *** PRAISE FOR SIREN SONG:Hunter's writing is as low-down, gritty, and insidious as the blues Yancy Lazarus loves. Just like the mysterious music drifting through the jungle toward Yancy's squad, Siren Song will get under your skin and sink its hooks into your mind. —eden Hudson, Author of Halo Bound (the Redneck Apocalypse series) *** Hey everyone, this is James Hunter. This story isn't a full length novel--its a novella length work (25K words), and is part of my Yancy Lazarus series. Its already free on Amazon, so I thought I'd post chapters here for the good folks of Royal Road. If you don't want to wait for updates or would prefer to read it on Kindle, you can pick it up for free here: https://www.royalroad.com/amazon/B01066TLC0
