《A Zombie's heart (BL) - HIATUS》Chapter 15

Sam’s POV
The tree was located at the end of a playground, about two hundred meters away from the houses. I approached the tree and stood a few meters away from the nearest branch and frowned, even though it was not my first time walking on the street near the playground, I never noticed that tree before, I could vaguely remember a big tree was there, but I was pretty sure that, it wasn’t that big and green, otherwise I would have definitely noticed it.
The tree was about fifteen meters tall with strong branches spread all around it for about five meters, it had big dark green leaves, with each leaf about forty centimeters long. The strangest thing was that the tree had fruits, and I never saw fruits like that before.
The fruits were bright yellow and every twenty or so were gathered together in a cluster similar to grapes, but the fruit itself looked like a strawberry with the size of a small apple. I wondered if it was just me thinking too much or that kind of fruit didn’t exist beforehand, to solve the issue, I sent a wind blade toward a branch holding a cluster and cut it.
The cluster fell to the ground, and to my surprise, it stayed whole and the fruits were hard enough to withstand the fall. Before I could approach the cluster and examine it, Mark ran directly under the tree; grabbed the cluster and hugged it between his arms, then started to jump and laugh before teasing me by saying “I caught it first, it should be mine.”
I smiled at his childish behavior and looked behind me searching for Jack, who turned out to have been stuck talking to a former soldier right outside the playground, which explained why Mark left him and focused his attention on teasing me.

I turned my head again toward Mark while thinking if I should play along with his teasing or not, but all my thoughts vanished when I glimpsed a brown thing moving behind his legs, however, before I could alert him or even move, what looked like a fist-thick root suddenly grabbed him from his legs, which made him fall onto the ground on his front, then the thing started to pull him into a small hole about a meter away from his position.
The whole situation took me by surprise, in the original timeline, there were no moving roots or anything similar to the thing I just saw, which made confused and my reaction speed was slower than usual.
By the time I reached Mark, his legs were already buried in the ground, while he was trying his best to keep himself from getting buried, by shoving his fingers desperately in the ground, nevertheless, all his attempts were useless as his body was still moving fast toward the hole.
I tried to locate whatever was dragging him, but I couldn’t see it anymore, therefore, all I could do was to grab Mark’s hands and try to pull him out of the hole. I yanked him and managed to stop him from being dragged anymore, but the force which was pulling him was immense and made him scream in pain as his body was ripping apart from the two opposite forces, so I had no choice but to stop pulling him.
I kept my grasp firmly on his hands and focused my attention at the small hole, it was hardly the size of Mark’s body, or more likely, his dragged body was shaping the hole to fit him. I looked at Mark who half of his body was already under the ground and contemplated on what to do, if only he wasn’t Jack’s friend, I would have left him to die.

I released his hands and used my earth ability at level one to widen the hole in the hope of seeing the thing that was dragging him, but at the low level of one, my attempt was futile as the soil kept falling from the side to cover the hole again, which made me little angry, but nevertheless, I couldn’t use my full ability it was going to draw unwanted attention to me.
I cursed as I tried again and increased my ability a little bit, just enough to overcome the falling soil, and walked toward the hole. I could feel the ground under my feet were soft and unsteady with noticeable movements, and I knew that I needed to act fast.
I focused on widening the hole with one hand until I saw the thing, which after a closer look, turned out to be root, I crouched down and tried to reach the root, but I couldn’t and it was dangerous to shoot a wind blade at it; because it was circling around Mark’s legs, with no other option, I widened the hole more and jumped inside it.
Mark’s body started to move faster from the moment I removed the soil, hence I had less time to think and had to act, even though I knew that what I was doing was stupid. I grabbed Mark’s thigh and pushed him up with the hand that was holding the hole open, and used my wind ability with my other hand to create a fast-rotating plate from the wind and used it to cut the root.
The soil was falling fast and Jack was running toward us with the soldier in tow. When the root was almost cut and its grasp on Mark’s legs became loose, I yanked him up and threw him two meters away from the quickly closing hole which was at that moment almost as deep as my height.
I spit out some dust and was preparing myself to jump out of the hole; when another root pierced through my stomach and circled itself around me and started to drag me down and under the ground. Even though I didn’t feel pain, I was shocked that something fragile like wood managed to pierce through my body.
When the hole was fully closed, Mark was coughing and panting trying to catch his breath while Jack was screaming my name and was about to reach Mark’s position.

What seems like an innocent game trope turns into a nightmare. This is a story of tragedy and the path to ultimate power. All in the hopes of an uncertain survival. _________ This fiction has NOT been abandoned. I made a haughty promise earlier to not worry because I'll continue this series, and with things lately, I've only proved myself a liar. Further promises dwindled, and I've lost trust. So many things have been going on recently that I've been booked. I will refrain from making any future guarantees or promises as my busy schedule will stay with me for a long long while. Time for me to actually spend on writing and revising won't appear until at the least November 19. I won't say expect that's when I'll restart, but you can expect expecting it to maybe happen. That's really shallow. But with everything going on, I've let my small reading base down. I apologize. I still stick by my statement though that I won't abandon this project. I plan to stick it to the end, no matter the delay. Most importantly, thank you everyone; readers who both like and dislike my work. I appreciate your time spent on my dumb imagination. Stay toasty my readers in this winter season. Cheers. UPDATE: We're back on track. Thank you for your patience. Any future readers, heyo! Glad you're here. UPDATE 2: So far it's been 21 days since I last uploaded a chapter. The best thing done for any fiction, no matter how good it is, is that it continues, and I have a bad history with that. 1 fiction on hiatus and already more delays with less than 20 chapters in this fiction. I've been very preoccupied with adding more things to do in my life rather than actually committing to any particular thing. That applies primarily to this. I cannot abandon this, as busy as my future looks and will look as I get busier and busier. Someday, I hope, I will be able to sit down and just write. just. write. But for now, I ask for patience. I suppose I'm glad this fiction hasn't picked up so that I don't disappoint too many people if any really. But I need to commit and it's going to happen sometime and sometime soon. No more flowery words. I'll see you later. UPDATE 3: It's very evident I won't be able to pick up this story for a while. With AP Testing, competitions, and other things I am busier than ever. But I must complete this fiction. I have too. Until next time. UPDATE 4: It is now the summer. I owe everyone an apology. Chances are, nobody's around to see this, and that is okay. I only blame myself for this sort of brokenness of a fiction, not that it is actually that bad but I am just exaggerating it for dramatic effect. But what's not exaggerated is the severity of my broken promise. I apologize for my naive claims about finishing a novel that I couldn't finish and that I didn't have the discipline to finish. Nor the skills, really, I was and am still an immature writer. What is to place now? I want to make it clear I understand this is my fault. I will man up to this. And I will accept any criticism. I understand I messed up. Reading Stephen King's On Writing made it clear to me that I need to do two things:Read lots. And write lots.I have done neither. If I don't have the time to read often, how do I expect to write? I need to become more experienced. I need to become a serious writer. So if I want to dream of continuing, I need to at least fulfill both requirements. I enjoy writing. I haven't written seriously outside of school in a while. I planned to write this summer and finish this. I made a lot of promises that I didn't keep.So there's that. I won't enact any self-pity, or be foolishly obsessed. What I did was wrong, and I must deal with it. I let down readers. And I apologize.I hope I can find forgiveness. This is a writer's sin.I won't promise I'll finish this. I intend to finish this, at some point, because writing is fun and I want to write. But how things are don't reflect that. Maybe I'll finish this at some point. Maybe I won't. I won't be naive to make that promise.I thank everyone who has read this if this is the end. If not, and hopefully not, I thank everyone who is to read future chapters. I thank everyone who allowed me to live in the miniscule little dream of mine as I passed my days. I thank everyone who cares enough to read this. Until next time, peace everyone. Thank you. You are all great readers and great people. I wish everyone the best in whatever reading/writing endeavors follow you henceforth.

Interface
Welcome to the World-City of Thousel, the sixth iteration of life on the planet. These are the recordings of the people of Thousel. Thousel is believed to be the second longest iteration of life, and the overall most prosperous compared to what we know about the past five iterations. Medicine and technology have all progressed abundantly, and the world itself has been turned into one great city, governed and managed by the Governmental-Company Alliance, or the GCA.These particular recordings concern the discovery of a peculiar machine. When two very different people find themselves bound by the fate of one mysterious bot, life in the World-City begins to change… Interface is a cyberpunk webnovel set in an ecumenopolis world where people evolved with electro-sensory abilities. These senses shape the face of modern technology and life in a world where the three largest corporations run what has effectively become the government. Each of these three companies control various aspects of life in the city, and they all constantly vie for domain and power over one another. The world stands at the precipice of biological, technological, and historical breakthrough. After decades of study into microbiology, archaeology, and geology, it has been discovered that sentient life has lived on the planet multiple times over. These past peoples are referred to as the “prior iterations of life,” and it is believed that five great civilizations were constructed before the rise of the modern world. No one can be sure for certain what caused these peoples’ extinction long ago, and the theories range from simply dying off over time to massive tectonic fractures in the face of the planet. Advanced technology, far more complicated than anything the people possess today, has been uncovered in multiple locations. This has lead scholars to speculate on exactly how long each iteration of life survived and how far they progressed as a society. None of the companies have been able to find a way to make this ancient technology work for their own profit. It is as though they are each missing the final key needed to unlock these centuries old secrets. What could this knowledge reveal about the nature of life across every iteration? What power could it give to the one who wields it?Far from the investigation into the origin of life, two kids unlock a new mystery – one that ties their fates to the discovery of an old, mysterious robot. Suddenly, eyes begin to turn towards them as life in the city of Thousel changes wherever they go…
