《Son of the Eternal Eclipse》Chapter 8: The Forest Beast

The monster growled and roared as it looked down upon Tyra and Syren.
"Don't go anywhere, Syren," Tyra said as she charged in.
"I won't," Syren said before he turned the pages of his black tome. He chanted to himself quietly once he reached a spell that he wanted.
Tyra dodged and weaved around the creature's flailing intestines and arms. It had tough skin, and she could only get a couple of cuts in as she made sure not to get hit.
Syren's shadow began to morph until it became tendrils with hands at each ends of them. They reached out towards the beast swiftly and held the creature down. As it tried to escape, Tyra sliced at the back of the creature's knees. Blood spurted out onto Tyra's armor, but she could hardly care for the wellbeing of another monster. As the beast fell to its knees, Tyra climbed up and cut the beast's neck. Blood poured out of it until there was almost nothing left. It weakened further until it was left lying on the ground. And Tyra stabbed it once in the head to finish it off.
It was over. The beast of the forest was quickly dispatched.
Syren said, "Great job, Tyra."
"You, too," Tyra said as she looked down on the creature with hateful eyes.
Syren looked back at Whisper and asked quietly, "So, you really think she'll slow us down?"
"Yes," Whisper replied, "She's not your ally. She is your warden."
"Hmph. Maybe. But I don't care. All I care about it fixing this eclipse. If getting killed by the end of it is punishment, then so be it. I won't do what you suggest," he replied.
Whisper was quiet and pointed in a direction that was complete opposite towards where we were originally heading. "The closest demon is that way. We should get going."

Whisper took one step and paused for a moment. "No. Not that way. The closest one is... that way," he said as he pointed in the direction that we were originally going.
"Are you sure?" Syren asked.
"Yes. It was... nothing. Probably just the wind playing tricks or something."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing. Nothing at all."
Tyra came over to Syren and said, "Let's get going. I'm not familiar with whatever we fought. Let's try to get to the next city over. You'll be able to relax there."
Whisper said, "That should be fine. I think the road we're taking leads into the city anyways."
"Alright, Tyra. Let's get going," Syren said.
But as soon as they were about to go, more trees began to get displaced. More creatures came out of the forest similar to what they fought. There were hordes of them. Some were as large as the trees, but others were just the size of a regular human. These ape-like creatures with hundreds of eyes stared back at them. The mouths salivated as well as their intestines. The small ones carried man-made weapons - axes and swords made of bronze, bows and arrows. It was as if they were a primitive tribe.
And once Whisper saw this, he wondered even more about where these monsters came from.
"Looks like we're going to have to fight our way through," Syren said.
"I can see that," Tyra replied.
They muttered guttural noises and surrounded them, but neither of them were afraid of death nor did they plan on it. Tyra gripped her blade. Syren conjured his sword from his own shadows after quickly chanting the words he needed. He didn't even need to look at the book to remember what he needed to say. And the two of them were ready to face the oncoming storm of demonic beasts.

The Kodoku Game
In Japanese folklore, there once existed an ancient technique among alchemists for harvesting the strongest poison known to man. A poison so vicious, so horrendous, that a single drop could incapacitate an entire nation of humans, several times over. A poison so intense that a single drop could turn the tides of a war on its head. As potent as it appeared however, this poison could be harvested from the blood of a single insect alone- an insect the alchemist’s called the ‘Kodoku’. As lucrative as was attaining this poison however, the problem lied in identifying this insect- its appearance, shape and size changed from region to region and from continent to continent. Sometimes it took the appearance of a ladybug and other times a horned-beetle. In order to determine the identity of this special insect the alchemists came up with an ingenious method. They created an impregnable jar of clay out of the best sandstone they could find and placed hundreds of different insects into the same jar. The jar was made with such great mastery that it allowed no insects to escape and allowed no objects to enter. The laws of nature dictated that the insects would remain together in the jar forever. However, it turned out that as time went on, the insects’ hunger for food and power caused them to turn against each other- one insect ate another until only one remained. This sole insect contained a poison that far surpassed that of all the others and became stronger as it ate more and more insects. The alchemists at this point had succeeded in identifying the Kodoku and could extract it’s poison as long as they continued to feed it regularly. Although this folklore ends here, the actual story does not. One day, as the alchemists cheered in joy of having identified the Kodoku they so eagerly wanted, they forgot to close the lid on the very jar that was considered to be completely impregnable. This small gap was just large enough for the Kodoku inside to crawl out. Famished from not having been fed for weeks, the Kodoku ended up eating the very alchemists that nourished its growth until not even the bones remained. Yet, the Kodoku’s hunger didn’t seem to subside in the slightest. So it traveled to the next village and began eating whatever it could find there. Its poison made it unparalleled in strength and slowly but surely it began to dwindle down the population of the entire city. Yet its hunger only continued to grow. So it traveled to the next city over and ate all it could there. Very soon, the Kodoku couldn’t find any more food to eat. There was no one left to eat and no one left to spectate. So it stood there, by itself pondering what possibly was left to eat that could satiate its hunger. But there was one thing left that Kodoku realized it had never eaten. Itself.

The Plan
An infinite world couldn’t be real, but if it was, well this would happen. Imagine a world that isn’t covered in water, but an endless atmosphere. Plates of land, named “islands”, float and drift almost aimlessly. There is no sun, stars, roof, or floor; just boundless air in every direction. Light is generated from the movement of air flow. Magical and mystical powers keep islands floating and the world full of fresh entropy. Some of these floating islands drift upwards or downwards or any combination of volatile or patterned velocities. Air flow also follows the same characteristics of islands, which generates the light and heat. In a world with no horizon, the different inhabitants struggle. Beings calling them selves deities across the endless space are countless. If you were to fall off an island, you would inevitably hit another island; if you didn’t die from old age first. Many inhabitants don’t know the land further than their own eye sight or town they grew up in. Almost all inhabitants of islands have supernatural abilities, ranging in ability and skill. Magical abilities are kept individually; and mystical powers are borrowed. Islands float because the land is enchanted by either a magical or mystical crystal. Magical islands are known for vertical variance, while mystical islands are known for vertical stability. The islands rotate around focal points, known as 'the center'. There are many 'the center', but no one knows this yet... Warning: Tagged Mature 18+ for Strong Language, Gore, Violence, and sexual scenes. Google Drive (Click here to open new window) WIP/spoilers
