“What the hell do you mean, Jack’s gone??”
Gab had arrived home from work that evening to find Jack’s room empty, his clothes and toys gone. Gina sat passively at the kitchen table. Vague. Empty.
“Brian wants full custody,” Gina shrugged. “He picked up Jack while you were at work. He’s going to keep him ‘til court.”
“And you didn’t think it was relevant to tell me about this earlier?!” Gab was livid. “Had you and Brian talked about this??”
Years of suppressed fury washed over her in waves.
“I am the one who looks after him! I cook his food, I wash his clothes, I take him to school,” she cried. “And suddenly you tell me that Brian wants full custody?!!” She was pacing like mad; she didn’t know which way to turn.
“I didn’t know it would actually happen,” whined Gina. “Brian’s all talk. He’s been saying this for years. I didn’t think he’d actually do anything about it.”
“Yeah?!” Gab cried, suddenly realising something new despite her disorientation. “Well, I’m GLAD Brian’s taken Jack. I’m GLAD!”
Gina made her ‘shock’ face with all the authenticity of a mime.
“You mean you don’t want to look after your baby brother anymore?” Gina asked. “Gabrielle, I’m surprised!”
“NO Mum, NO! That’s not it. How dare you!” Gab yelled. “Brian deserves Jack. Jack deserves a good home. At least Brian acts like a parent!” Gab stormed towards the front door.
“What is that supposed to mean?” yelled her mother in retort.
“You even have to ask?!! I cannot BELIEVE you are so oblivious!” Gab was blind with rage and disbelief.
“I have health issues!” her mother’s voice was finally rising too, and she stood up from the table. Gab was glad. It was better than that infernal equilibrium that was less like calm and more like infinite nothingness.

“You have care-factor issues!” Gab jabbed, turning before she walked out the door. “You don’t CARE—about Jack or me!”
Gina huffed and puffed; she glared at Gab. She did not respond. And then, she closed her eyes, held her hands together in prayer and glided towards the sunroom. Down, down, down; she was sinking back into her ocean of passivity. This was the last straw.
“Stuff you, Mum!” cried Gab, slamming the door as knives of guilt stabbed through her on a thousand different angles.

A/N: I'll update chapters when I get to places where I feel it's right, I don't know where to go and want some direction or would like to have you help with the narrative in some way. Having others make choices forces me to be creative and I think that's when I'm at my best. Keep an eye out for polls in post chapter notes, they usually last 2 days. As always, love each other, and know I am grateful for every single person who reads my works.

All the main characters in the story will have their highlights 1- English is not my native language, so I apologize for the spelling mistakes; 2-the whole story is original; however, there are some minor references to other works. 3-All worlds are fictional (including our protagonist's world), so don't use the "common sense" of our world in this novel Chapter words: 800-1500 ATTENTION THE COVER ART IS NOT MINE; HOWEVER, I HAVE NOT FOUND THE ARTISTS' NAME YET, IN IT I OFFER MY FULL CREDIT TO THE BEAUTIFUL ARTS. Long Shadow
No destiny, no choice, no hope. Our protagonist, a coward summoned to a world meant for heroes; a new world with new rules and old cruelties. Join him on his adventures as he must deal with menus, monsters, and mysteries in this litrpg fantasy. Thomas Goodwill was an average boy with an average life, all that changed when he woke up in a new reality. Now, out of his depth, damn near out of his mind, he must learn to survive in a game-like reality with no reloads, checkpoints, or save scumming. He does, however, have a drunk snake. Thank you for reading my first story, hopefully, the first of many to come. This will be my main story and is meant to help me practice and hone my skills as I slowly produce more complex ideas. It's a litrpg in which I want to only lightly focus on the mechanics as I don’t want to pad out the word count with math and number tables and while I want to add a few of my own twists here and there, overall I’m going to keep this story close to generic as possible so that I don't let my inexperience lead me into a corner. Thanks again to all willing to leave a review or some constructive criticism, without you I'd never improve. Unfortunately, Cover art is by me.

This is the story of how a band of bookworms realized that when destiny pulled hard enough, struggling was futile; it was best to relax and go along for the ride.
