《Unfortunately This Happened.》Chapter 9 Escorting

After two days have passed, I head to the Laughing Raven, Sarah notices me wondering at the entrance looking for Alexa. She calls out to me.
"Hey Ren! Alexa has already signed you and her up to join the caravan heading to Halo City. That place is very dangerous with a bunch of random power leveled monsters lurking around Dungeon Valley. There is five separated Dungeon masters that continuously fight each other for territory. There was a report ten years ago there were originally 7 masters."
"Oh, I didn't know that, Alexa told me we can make some serious coins there, I have been wanting to get more skill proficiency lately. With all my stat boosts, I feel that I can run away for my life if needed."
Sarah just looked gloomy when I mentioned 'run away', maybe I should've said I could be them all no matter what, like an idiot?
Angry red lips Alexa walks in behind me, and says "So you're finally here? What have you been doing these past two days? Goofing off at the Tailorshop with Clyde? Messing around at the orphanage with Petra? Sneaking to the church to see Mia?"
I roll my eyes at her, she's obviously upset with me ignoring every time she try's to come see me. She knows I collect damaged clothing from the church, deliver repaired clean clothing from the Tailorshop, and eat free breakfasts at the orphanage just to spend time with everybody I got adopted away from.
Her belligerent attitude keeps making me mad and uninterested in her, no matter how cute she is as well. "So, who contracted a couple of rookies to escort a caravan? Surprisingly Abe said I could go too... Same with Edna. They looked like they are happy for extra income coming in."

Alexa looks upset again with me ignoring her question, "Honestly, I want to like you, but just can't. Sir Alex the Jailor recommended to the merchant, Oliver Plume, to take us along as an investment to future great adventurers. Oliver readily accepted since as a community, we are all investing in each other to grow and develop."
A strange man with a feather logo embroidered into his vest appears as we are talking, with Sarah observing the conversation not know how to include herself. With this as her chance, she speaks up to the strange man. "Oh Mister Plume, these two are the up and coming adventurers Sir Alex told you about. My sister Alex, and the Tailorshop boy Ren."
Muster Plume looks me and Alexa up and down, trying to gauge how competent we are. "So you two are the ones, according to your gear, the girl is the better choice of an investment, and you boy are the risky one, you look like fodder."
Oh wh-what? Did he call me, the Soldier of Fortune, fodder? Okay I can see what he means with me just having generic villager clothing with a dagger equipped to my belt with no prep bag for the trip. "I heard you are providing for us, as well paying us two silvers each to take you to Halo city?"
"Correct boy!" Mister Plume says, "I am bringing our speciality feathers for writing and arrows, as well, our famous product of blank badges to sell. The idea that someone has a prepared badge that can be re-used after being killed was our idea. Understand how amazing our Family products are!"
I guess it is amazing in his perspective, but I want to get going on this trip already. "Can we go already?"

"Watch your tongue boy! I am your boss in this contract, be grateful I even accepted you two in. But yes, I came here to get going in haste!"
Why not just say, come on let's go? Unless this was an unneeded interview that had to happen, so he could trust us... Anyway he led us to our seniors that would be travelling with us.
Jim, and Robin Stain, the Stain family are a bunch of mostly mercenaries/adventurers. While the Hubble's deal with how farms and politics work. Sir Alex, I found out, was a Stain family member that fell in love with a Hubble family member, as to why he was a town guard.
Jim and Robin waved at us and started walking a fast pace of us ahead on the road. Their job was to scout several minutes of us to be able to report any ambushes that might, and clear monsters from the road.
Even though I should've actually trained for real with Alexa, I felt like I could handle whatever destiny brings us. Do adventurers regularly scout ahead to report dangers? My gut says trouble is going to happen.
I roll my magical die and got the bunny girl Izzy to appear, "So half a month you say, but with this skill with the lowest odds to meet, gets you to maybe help?
The pink haired and eyed girl smirks, " Yea I am big on free will, and by getting me from a dice roll deserves my time." She then winks at me and frowns at a frowning Alexa. "So you are his teammate huh? Maybe I can encourage the ogre to go somewhere else besides of sleeping on the highway you are travelling down hmm? Or I could encourage another ogre to appear and see how your luck skills work out?"
I too frown at Izzy, I know for sure now she is planning events that will happen to me.
Izzy points at Alexa, "You stay behind at your tavern, Ren doesn't need you unless you want to fight two ogres?"
Really? Jealous over me who isn't a god of a stat, and threatening a girl to stay away from me who I don't even care about?
Alexa looks shocked, "You wouldn't, would you? Never mind those ears and eyes tell me who you are easily. The bored luck goddess of the three. Why are you all different species even though you are sis-"
"Don't say it Alexa!" I cover her mouth remembering what not ask, from Mia the priestess. Their species!
"Three, you're getting three ogres, see you never again girl!" Izzy dissapears in a pink glimmering shine.
"Well, three ogres huh, and we can't even warn Jimmy and Robin too." I say.
"Seems like it." Mister Plume surprisingly responds. "Alright let's go, the scout would easily spot the ogres regardless of a goddess saying it's coming for us. We can retreat back for security, if needed.
We take off, after three uneventful hours we camp for three hours and head off again to Halo City.

Someday, he’ll find where his family went. Someday, he’ll uphold his end of the bargain and hunt beings powerful beyond anything he’s ever known. Someday, he might even – hatch? “CHEEP!?” Things to Know: -Cheep!? Will release on a minimum weekly schedule. -After a backlog of chapters, posting will slow, but in the interim you can expect a chapter a day up until roughly 25 chapters. -This story at times will potentially carry some heavy moments, but the tone is intended to be lighter overall. -There are invisible game-like elements in this story, but nothing so concrete as a dedicated gamelit novel. -I personally have some issues with anxiety, so I may or may not interact with the community a lot. I'll try if anyone has questions, but I can't guarantee that it'll be consistent. -MC is a non-human lead, and will never actually become human. Romance will potentially happen between side-characters, but not with the MC. -MC IS NOT THE ONLY VIEW POINT. I have to put that out there because people sometimes hate alternate PoV's in a story. None of them will be filler, and they'll be there only to give a little bit more nuance and meaning to the world that the MC has stepped in, or is about to be imminently important. I'll try to keep them down, but this also helps to prevent me from burning out getting trapped in one view. -Most of all, I hope that this story is enjoyable to you, and that you have a great time reading it! -Written by Michael Adams, Cowritten/Edited by Summer Kent

Crimson Gloom
Crimson Gloom. The time when the moon turns crimson, illuminating the landscape with its crimson glow. The time when the ‘doors’ to the Crimson Abyss open. One shall gaze into the abyss and gain its secrets and powers. Concurrently, the abyss also gazes into oneself, gaining one’s sanity and humanity. Dimensional rifts appeared spontaneously on Earth, bringing otherworldly demons along with the Crimson Gloom. Bloody battles were fought, noble sacrifices were made. Humans eventually sealed the rifts and successfully defended their homeworld. Alas, the seals were not perfect. The Crimson Abyss continued to exist, slowly influencing Earth and its inhabitants. Half a century of relatively uneventful years passed… humanity slowly descended into corruption, and the majority of them knew nothing of the effects of the Crimson Abyss. Is there only the dreadful gloom left to the world? Can one find brightness in the increasingly gloomy world? The youth who had gazed into the Crimson Abyss had no answer, nor did he care. He only wanted the Crimson Gloom to end, to forever seal the Crimson Abyss. A mistake and a twist of fate led the youth into a seemingly totally different direction. Will he forget his lifelong goal? Will he instead step back onto his initial path that he fervently pursued? Disclaimer: I do not own the image on the cover. Image edited on canva.com. This piece of work, after all, is only a first draft and by no means an end product by an amateur (beginner) writer. Mistakes are bound to happen. With that said, I will strive to improve as I write. Feel free to point out errors and inconsistencies as you read. I thank you for your time. Finally, I pledge to not rewrite this novel until the first draft is completed.
