《THE MAN WHO FOUGHT GOD》3. Fetch

Weeks passed, as Joseph and the white wolf traveled. Joseph was looking for people and the white wolf followed him every step of the way.
"You know it would help out a lot if you carried some of this." Joseph was looking over his empty shoulder, the other was carrying a few rabbits, to talk to the white wolf on his heels. The wolf just looked at him, its tongue hanging out of its mouth and bouncing as it walked. "Humf, fine. Whatever, I guess I can't say much since you catch most of them."
The snow here was now frozen solid allowing Joseph to walk on top of the snow. This made traveling much easier on Joseph, or so he thought. Joseph felt a tug on his foot. Before he knew it he was face down on the ground. "OWW, what was that?" looking back he sees the wolf hopping up and down staring at his bootlace. Joseph kicks his feet back and forth to keep them away from the wolf while making his way onto them.
"No, you can't have those. I need them!"
The wolf looked at Joseph cocking its head to the side. It then slowly started to lean down and towards his shoes.
"No... Stop... No, stop it!"
After slowly moving forward as if Joseph couldn't see it the wolf suddenly lunged forward. Joseph shoved it's head away with his hands, and its attention went from his shoes to him.
"Oh no," Joseph muttered to himself after realizing what he had done. The wolf then lunged at him this time. Joseph dodged to the side but the wolf caught a mouthful of his coat. With this, it pulled him to the ground shaking its head back and forth. It then proceeded to drag him around in circles while shaking him the whole time.

"Let go of me! Darn, I think I'm going to die. I can't, If I do who will save my brother?"
Joseph hit the wolf's head trying to get it to stop and let go, it did. After letting go it hopped on top of Joseph, but he used his feet to push it past him and causing it to flip mid-air, landing on its back. After kicking it Joseph got to his feet but by the time he did the wolf was already up and charging him.
"I can't outrun you so if I'm going down it won't be without a fight!"
Joseph charged back at the wolf screaming. The wolf jumped up biting down on his right arm. Using that arm it slung him around eventually tossing him and he went sliding across the ice. Eventually coming to a stop he got to his knees clutching his right arm.
"Crap I'm down one arm now! It's probably broken but I hope I'm not bleeding too bad." Quickly pulling up his sleeve he saw that his arm was completely fine. "What?"
Before he could figure out why, the wolf was already in front of him once again. "Come ON!" It then slammed into him throwing him to the side. Though the wolf was only up to the waist of a twelve-year-old it was somehow still strong enough to toss one around like a toy.
Joseph rolled to his feet and pulled out one of the short sticks he had sharpened the points of. Using it he stopped the wolf's next attack by blocking its bite with the stick. He could hear the sound of the stick beginning to break under the weight and bite of the white wolf. However, the wolf didn't stop at biting the stick. Joseph was now being pushed back, his feet sliding across the sheet of ice.

Eventually, the stick snapped. No longer being pushed by the wolf it then slipped between his arms. Joseph had been leaning forward to stay on his knees while getting pushed back, but this now left him falling towards the wolf wide open. The wolf bit down on Joseph's neck and pinned him to the ground. Joseph closed his eyes scared to watch what was about to happen to him.
He laid there feeling the teeth against his neck, but nothing happened. Opening his eyes Joseph saw the wolf eye staring back at him. They stared at each other for what felt like the last bit of Joseph's life. Then without warning, the wolf let go of Joseph's neck and began to lick him in his face, and the scar on its side. Joseph stayed paralyzed unsure whether or not to move.
The wolf then laid down by his feet and began chewing on his bootlace. Joseph looked at the wolf, whose tail was wagging vigorously, and watched in awe.
"Did we just fight for my bootlace!?"
The wolf didn't move in acknowledgment, but only to chew on his lace. After a while, the wolf stopped and sat up seeming ready to go, satisfied with its lace chewing session.
Joseph then made sure to tuck his bootlace in his boot before standing up to walk, being cautious of the wolf. It seemed to act normal as Joseph picked up the rabbits and his stuff. Joseph then pulled out one of his short, sharpened sticks from his coat. Looking at the wolf he hesitated before throwing it as hard as he could. The white wolf then took off after the stick moving at an alarming rate.
"I knew you were fast but I had no idea you were this fast."
Shortly after the wolf caught the stick in its mouth before it hit the ground. Racing back to Joseph looking proud of its achievement.
"Did you just want to play?" Joseph asked as he took the stick back from the wolf. "So that's why my arm wasn't broken or bleeding. You were just playing. Wait, that's playing to you? I thought I was going to die."
Joseph thought to himself, 'If you're that strong as a cub you should get a lot stronger as you grow up. Maybe I don't need somebody to help me get stronger. Fighting with you should make me really strong. And don't animals grow up fast so you'll be getting a lot stronger pretty fast. Alright, then it's settled. I'll train with this wolf for a while. Then if I stop getting stronger I'll start looking for someone else to help me get stronger.'
Bark. The wolf brought Joseph back to reality. After seeing the wolf staring at the stick it didn't take him long to figure it out and he threw the stick once again. The wolf raced off after it.

Blood & Noodles
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] As they always have, humanity hunts the gods roaming the world, craving the supernatural power that flows within their veins. Even a drop is zealously guarded, passed from master to student through the ages. It is with this stolen power that the Blooded - those with divine blood coursing through them - grasp beyond mortality and achieve prestige, power, and greatness. Yet, for every fraction of power gained, thousands perish, slain by the gods' supernatural prowess. But everything is beginning to change. Eight years ago, for the first time in human memory, a god was felled. Part-time chef and full-time nuisance Orvi wants nothing to do with gods. Living in a derelict city, his only concerns are ensuring his adopted family's restaurant is prosperous and how to best beat the neighbourhood boys in a fight. If he's lucky, he might even snag a date with the farmer's daughter at the market. But even though he cares nothing for the gods or their blood, the world won't leave him alone forever. Because to reach godhood, one must first leave their humanity behind. *** The first arc of Blood & Noodles follows the adolescent Orvi as he attempts to navigate his rapidly changing home and - by his own definition - protect his family. The story is told almost entirely in the first-person, from the perspective of a teenager who isn't always the sharpest tool in the shed. There are tragic elements, especially in the current arc. It's character-focused and driven, though the protagonist's shenanigans are backdropped by a world operating independently from him. Orvi's a generally light-hearted character, and though the story veers into darker territory, I also want it to be able to make readers smile. Action sequences, despite the fantastical elements, are meant to be grounded and clearly-conveyed; Orvi is a brawler, not a warrior. I'm trying to write a story that's enjoyable to read and flows nicely, mainly because it's more fun to write. I'm also trying to improve my writing, so any feedback, whether positive or negative, is welcome!
