《A new horizon》6. Limitations

[
Name - a crude table
Description - a simple table made with alder wood.
Status - complete
Upgrade - iron materials worth of 2 kg
]
"Huh.. Wait, it means I can upgrade things that I touch with my hands?" Gawen said.
In order to prove his own conjecture he proceeded to touch the bed. The panel that was above the table vanished and there was a new panel describing his bed and requirements of upgrading his bed came up over the bed.
"Okay.. So I need to touch things to upgrade them. This seems cool." Gawen thought.
"What if I touch the floor?"
Gawen then touched the floor which was made of rocks. When he touched it he didn't have much expectation but what he saw on the panel made him the happiest person present in the world. Gawen in his wildest dreams never expected that he would see this.
[
Name - Deepwood Motte Castle
Description - a motte-and-bailey type castle made of stones (50%), earth( around 20%) and timber (the rest)
Status - incomplete and needs restoration.
Upgrade requirements -
1. Fortress type royal palace - more than thousand tonnes of marbles, silica, limestone and other components required (requirement met, want to upgrade?)
2.Luxury type royal palace - more than thousand tonnes of marbles and silica required (requirements met, want to upgrade?)
3. A strong fortress type castle - thousand tons of iron, aluminium, marbles, limestone and silica required. (requirements met, want to upgrade?)
]
"What the hell!!" Gawen almost let out a scream from his mouth. He could understand why the panel's name was Deepwood Motte as the floor was attached to the castle and the floor in itself didn't have a name. So, the status panel took all of the castle as a whole.

What he didn't understand was the reason behind the upgrade requirements and that he could upgrade the castle even though he was pretty sure that their castle didn't have such a huge amount of marbles, granites or such other materials stored inside. As far as he remembered no castles in the North had such high storage of limestone or other materials.
But then he saw a small window panel beside the main panel
[
Effective radius for using the materials for upgrade - 100 kms
Exp achievement after completion - 10%
]
"What is this effective radius?" Gawen couldn't make head or tail about this small window panel beside the 'status panel'. And after a lot of thinking it finally clicked him.
The effective radius here meant he could use the materials that are in a 100 km radius which is connected to the item he wanted to upgrade. Since the castle was situated over a piece of land, 100 kms radius was the effective distance he would be able to use the materials from.
Those materials required for upgrade were easily available on the crust of the planet, thus there were sufficient materials that could be used for upgrade. That was the only explanation that Gawen could come up with.
If this was true, then he had effectively hit the jackpot in the truest sense possible. He could already imagine how overpowered this 'status panel' would be if he could use it effectively. Wars would be a walk in the park for him and even the famous dragons or the wights would find it hard to break his defense if he willed it.
Though it might not give him magic or give him extraordinary strength, this was way better than what he hoped for or expected.
"I would love to change the castle, but I would rather not. This might trigger the neighbouring houses and will cause complications. I was just assassinated. Don't want my family to be in the cross hairs of someone else again."

"But what is this experience? Is there a hidden reward if I upgrade the castle?"
Gawen again started thinking of all possible scenarios relating to the experience percentage but he still couldn't understand. He could only understand after he upgrades the castle, which was not possible immediately.
"Only time will give me a specific answer."
Later he touched all the different items in the room to see what he was seeing before was real and not a hallucination. He had never been handed out anything free of cost and he had to struggle all his life.
This was the first time he got such a huge gift and it was magical to say the least. After making sure that whatever he had was permanent he finally went to bed. He still felt a bit weak in his body.
It didn't take long for him to fall asleep after hitting his head on the pillow. Though he felt a little uncomfortable with the surroundings it still couldn't stop him from taking a journey to the dreamland.
The next day he was woken up by the noise of the door being knocked and his mother's voice.
"Gawen are you awake?"
"Mother.. I am awake.. You can come in." Gawen replied after getting up on his bed hastily. His mother following his voice opened the door and walked
"Did I wake you up my son? I am sorry.. I was worried.. How do you feel? Did you recall any past memories?" Sybelle replied.
"No.. I am sorry mother, I still don't remember anything... But need not worry.. I will soon learn everything and be just like before." Gawen replied.
"I hope so my boy." Sybelle said as she held Gawen's hands in her to assure him that everything was alright. Gawen, seeing this as a chance, tried concentrating on bringing the 'status panel' of his mother.
But there was none!!
"Does this only work on inanimate objects?" Gawen thought as he touched his blanket.
[
Name - Fur blanket
Description - A fur type blanket made from the skin of a mountain bear.
Status - clean and tidy
Upgrade requirements - cotton worth of 2 kg
]
"Oh so it really isn't possible to upgrade a living being. That's a shame. Would have been fun if I could help my parents and upgrade them to further heights.”

The Ingress Estate
Jonathon Eucole. Soldier. Scholar. Now an Initiate, the dedication without dedication, he finds himself both prisoner and master of an arcane edifice, the Ingress Estate, which can neither be escaped, nor controlled; only diverted, maintained, and pacified. This is a gothic fantasy story, set in a world in which gods and the afterlife are not only real and known, but were both established in living memory of some of the inhabitants after millennia of arcane warfare with the being who constructed the mundane reality the humans occupy. But this isn't the story of those who colonized the afterlife at the cost of their own humanity, but a somewhat more ordinary man, in somewhat extraordinary circumstances. This is also a LitRPG-lite, which means there's a system of sorts, fragments of which can be observed through Jonathon's eyes. Don't expect level-up screens, or statistics, or indeed numbers much at all, beyond those the inhabitants of the world itself apply to understanding their own reality. It pretty much doesn't matter to the story, I mention it so those who don't want to read LitRPG at all can successfully avoid it here. I don't have any particular plan here, just some ideas inherent in the genre. This is a character concept I toyed with some years ago; an old man, bright of mind but weighed down into apathy, both by his past and his responsibilities for a terrible estate that cannot be left without stewardship. Don't expect any kind of overarching plot or story, because that's really not what this is about. Also don't expect much dialogue. Or character development. Or much of anything, really, because I've planned nothing in the way of an actual book, here. Other relevant information, if you've read this far for some reason: The MC isn't super-powerful to begin with, and probably never will be. He's a veteran with some useful skills, and the insight on how to use them, so can deal with the world's ordinary threats reasonably well, but not too much beyond that. --- Currently on hiatus, as currently the story has a rather poor ratio of effort-to-personal-payoff. I may return to this once I have a clear idea of how to get the stories where I want them. I've started a more standard LitRPG using the same system. But if you like intelligence characters who cleverly min-max their classes, it probably isn't the story for you; it's the story of a rather ordinary guy who winds up in a very similar universe.
