《Kill or Die》Prologue Part Four: The Price of Surviving

I ran all the way.
My fight had taken me a little far from our home, and it was a thirty minutes walk to get there. But it didn’t matter.
I needed to get home as fast as possible.
On my way there, I saw hell.
There was a girl crying on the sidewalk, holding a guy with a knife on his eye.
Besides her, a man was running in circles, screaming. He was covered in blood. On his left, there was a human with a cracked skull.
Everywhere, there were bodies. And besides the bodies, there was madness.
I couldn’t face it. So I only ran faster.
Some houses were burning, so I was glad when I finally got home and saw that ours was fine.
I entered fast, calling for my siblings.
No one answered.
I started panicking, yelling louder, and running to their bedroom.
Please, I thought. Please, let them be alright.
I found them both there, on the floor.
My brother was crying, hugging his legs.
My sister was quiet, laying on her back.
Oh, God.
I stopped moving, petrified.
Oh, God. Why?
My father’s dad of the year trophy, the one I gave to him when I was seven and he kept for all those years was besides my sister, splattered with her brains.
Why did that happen?
That was too much. I was barely coping with what had been happening.
I had no idea what to do now. I couldn’t control it.
I was overwhelmed by fury and despair.
“HOW COULD YOU HAVE DONE IT?” I screamed at my brother. Before I knew it, I was on my feet, and my hands were forcing his throat. I hit his back against the wall, dropping some furniture on the floor.
I couldn’t care less.
I kept pressing him putting more and more pressure. Then I realized what I was doing.

I was killing my brother.
When had that happened?
Would I do it? Could I do it?
My brother was trying to get free, desperately.
But his struggles weren’t helping him.
I was too strong for him.
He started losing his strength. He gave up trying to get out, and looked at me with resigned eyes. Somehow, he managed to whisper:
“I’m so sorry. I just didn’t want to die.”
And that broke me.
I let go of him and fell on my knees, crying. My brother fell too, barely conscious.
Why did that have to happen?
“Brother…” he said trying to reach for me.
“DON’T FUCKING TOUCH ME” I screamed and at that moment I almost attacked him again. He flinched in fear and stayed back.
How could he have done it? Our little sister.
I looked at her again. Her nose had been broken and her head had been smashed so hard on her forehead that it was half opened. Her face was a mask of red.
I would never do it.
Would I?
Didn’t I almost kill my brother, just a few seconds ago?
What’s this fucking nightmare?
I got up with blind rage.
I started screaming, punching the wall. I ran around the house, pushing, throwing and breaking everything. I barely saw what I was doing, but I couldn’t stop.
I needed to destroy something. I needed to destroy everything.
I yelled the whole time. I felt incredible weak and hurt, but my body just kept going.
No room survived.
When I’d finally calmed myself, I realized I was alone.
My brother was gone. The house was destroyed.
My sister was dead.
Without knowing what to do, I went looking for my father’s shovel and started digging on our backyard.

It Started with Slime
Before we jump in, let me say that the MC starts stupid, so the language and writing style is straightforward to reflect this. The writing improves with the MC and as the chapters progress (I hope). It is also a gradual growth story, so no zero to hero in ten seconds... with that out of the way: An alchemical experiment has gone wrong and results in a Slime Monster. It doesn't have a name at first and is something that it will need to work out! This story follows a Slime that starts as a Micro Slime with some level of consciousness, and there is more to it than meets the eye. Survival is the name of the game. To improve, it works hard to grow, evolve and become more powerful to survive its harsh new reality. There is a lot more going, and only time will tell if this Slime (all its various versions) can become strong enough to make it through the strife to the other side. It's a harsh world, after all. It Started with Slime is a story with a Monster Protagonist Evolution story. There will be no profanity and no sexual content, and there will be some violence and fighting descriptions. I am a native English speaker, and so the English here should be to a good standard. That said, even though editing, there may be some corrections and typos, so if you see some, let me know! If it bothers you a lot, I am working to make sure all chapters have no typos, but of course, some might slip through. I will endeavour to correct any picked up, though! Also, I started this a few months ago and so any feedback is always appreciated, also reviews and ratings! If you like or don't like the story, let me know in the detailed reviews! That always helps me see what is good and what needs improving. Working on releasing chapters twice a week, I will try to increase that as time goes, but at the moment, that is what I can release. Patreon has more. If the story gets more popular, then I will increase the releases. I am aiming ultimately for a chapter a day if I can get to that. Chapters are roughly 1500 words, with Interludes every five chapters being more or less than that! Enjoy! Edit: Book 1 finished on Patreon, and the format for Book 2 is slightly different with Interludes every three chapters, and the release schedule will be three chapters a week. Serenity of the Crow
Fena can’t die. To most, this might be considered a blessing. To others, a curse. Fena doesn’t really care what other people call it: for her, it’s reality. She’s content to keep her head down while working for the Mercenary Guild, but a new contract arrives that threatens to drag her back to a past she wants nothing to do with. Haunted by her own thoughts and a crow that never seems to shut up, Fena is caught between confronting her past and preventing it from ever happening again. Indigo is alone. Her adopted mother is gone, and the witch that never gets her pronouns right is currently the most popular researcher at the Royal Academy. Worse still, she suddenly finds herself with shoes to fill that are so enormous they’re more like a swimming pool, while that same witch flaunts a research project that could get them all killed. With the expectations of her entire sect weighing on her like a lead weight, will Indigo sink or swim? Can she stop the White Witch’s project before it’s too late? Or will the twisted politics of the Royal Academy prove too much? This is my first published story, so hopefully it goes well! I welcome constructive criticism, and I'd love to hear your thoughts and theories about where the story is headed! WARNINGS:This story contains references to depression, anxiety, panic attacks, self-harm, sexual abuse and manipulation. I WILL mark trigger warnings on the chapters that contain such content, but read at your own risk. Additionally there will be plenty of violence and gore but I promise to put it to good use. This series is also published on Scribblehub under the same name, Cover art by me Verification has been submitted by support ticket.

These aliens, calling themselves the Erta offered their designs and schematics for their True Virtual Reality (TVR) console, as well as access to their game in exchange for peace. And humanity, excited at the opportunity to achieve one of their life long dreams (that is, to experience True VR), graciously took them up on their offer. Now, after scientists have finally confirmed the console to be safe for humans, the game is to finally be released to the public. This comes to the joy of most of the population, but a small portion of them can't help but be upset. As thousands of the researchers meant to be developing virtual reality, are fired overnight.
