《GODFALL》6 The quest for food
Advertisement
The birds chirp in the dense forest, dark clouds. The demons must be scouting, killing off anyone left in the darkness. A giant creature skips by, brown fur, big, majestic antlers. I look at the knife, I gotta get food, water or they'll all starve. I sneak up towards the animal, it eats grass as I come up behind it. I lunge forward into a sprint, it simply turns to watch me. I raise the knife and just before I get close enough, it charges at me, antlers first.
I blink, but I see many children, the demons with hammers. The creature slams me up and away, I hit the ground. It gallops are heard as I groan, Why didn't my power work? Is that what the other oracles saw? Is that their fate? I get up slow with my grip on the knife tighter than ever, then chase after the creature once more. I blink- Demons appear out of nowhere, I open my eyes and they crumble to dust. A splitting headache manifests itself, the trees rotate around me, the ground spins. I grab my forhead and take a knee. My heart pumps loud, What if that guy can't even save them? What if everyone is dead soon?
Something rubs against my head- the animal with it's rough antlers. The headache, all thought, it all melts away. I sniffle as my hands glide on it's warm, furry head. Oh wait! I take out the knife and pause- But he comforted me, does it deserve death? No, but I- I must feed them! I try to stick the knife in him, but he jumps back. A flame whooshes through the distance between us. I stand up and a flame catches the creature on fire. The creature screams and bolts away. "Aww, poor widdle bambi." A demon laughs and turns his attention to me, short, skinny and purple veins.

His hands? Why am I so fixated on them? Nothing's off. He goes to snap his fingers and something, I jump back and a flame rises from where I was standing. His fingers snap, I jump to the side, but a second is a blast towards my face. I cover my face, and the blast blows me back, I blink- Garbled voices, my reflection with glowing blue eyes, the mirror cracks, a pin-up calendar tears. I pick up the individual days, each reads "Day of death" I hold the marker, the day begs me for an answer.
I open my eyes and charge towards the demon. Snap! I zig zag too him and he cocks back his fist, I dodge, a fake out punch slams against the side of my head. I fly for a couple feet backward. He snaps and I roll. I get up, "Feel the flames of hell!" He snaps and I blink, there I am again, marker in hand. "Funeral Date:" It begs for me to write it down. Demons smile wild over me, It's their fate! Accept it! Your children's souls will be gone, like they never existed. I look up and there's Archangels, It's fate. Please, go with grace, beauty. No more running, no more fear! I write, "I will choose for myself." This place goes all in reverse, the mirror fixes itself, I stand in the mirror, but my children are grown up, we're smiling.
I charge through the fire, it burns my skin as I take out the knife. I scream and lodge the knife in his heart, "I will choose, damn it!" He goes to snap near my face, but I twist the knife and he goes limp. I tear the knife out and his body morphs into a coin. I stomp on it quick before it disappears and push the fragments into the dirt. I look at the flames he left behind, burn his blood off my knife. I follow the burnt plant trail. There's the creature, he panicked and the fire consumed him. I kneel and take out the knife, Thank you, for your sacrifice. I swing the knife down.
