Mientras los dos hermanos caminaban por el camino de piedras rumbo a la parte vieja de la estancia, el silencio incómodo terminó provocando que Ernesto quisiera hablar el tema y comento:
—Nuestro padre siempre estuvo algo mal de la cabeza: confundía nuestros nombres, se olvidaba de cosas que acababan de pasar, decía cosas sin sentido y en algunos casos serios se quedaba meditando todo el día sobre sus locuras: ignorando a toda la familia. Desde que murió mamá, la situación empeoró y cada vez es peor...
—Algunas de sus locuras, no eran tan locas...—Murmuró Carlos con enojo, tratando de defender a su padre—Recuerdas que cuando éramos jóvenes, papá nos contaba historias de todo el mundo. Muchas de esas historias terminaron siendo reales; incluso he visitado los lugares donde se desarrollaron varias de las historias contadas por papá….
Ernesto se detuvo, miró a Carlos con seriedad y comentó con preocupación:
—Cuando te digo que papá está peor: no me estoy refiriendo a sus divagaciones. No importa que papá pierda completamente la cabeza: era algo que inevitablemente pasaría con la edad. Lo que no puedo tolerar, es que ahora: ¡Papá está agresivo! ¡Tiene conductas peligrosas hacia los demás!
—¿Hubo algún accidente?—preguntó Carlos entendiendo la seriedad del problema. Ahora que iba a formar una familia, entendía bien las preocupaciones de su hermano: su hermano no podía dejar que sus hijos vivan con un loco que en cualquier momento los ataca.
—Papá le estuvo tirando cosas a la criada—Mencionó Ernesto con preocupación—La chica creció con nosotros, es prácticamente una hija adoptiva, no hay motivo de semejante actitud por parte de papá hacia ella.
—Tal vez la chica le esté haciendo algo a papá aprovechándose de su vejez—Comentó Carlos con preocupación sobre el asunto.
—La chica es un ángel; incluso mi esposa quiere casarla con mi hijo—Comentó Ernesto rápidamente—Además, papá me amenazó con un cuchillo en una ocasión y no estaba bromeando: realmente papá no pudo reconocerme en aquella ocasión...

—¡Papá te amenazó!—Gritó Carlos con nervios en la voz.
—Si, no me reconoció y me tenía miedo...—Dijo Ernesto con pena—La situación es delicada, me temo que ocurra algo grave si no logramos que el estado mental de papá se recupere un poco.
—Si la situación es tan delicada, sé de una forma de ayudarlo—Comentó Carlos meditando con profundidad sobre el tema—Hace mucho entendí que esto podía terminar ocurriendo, así que durante mis viajes busqué alguna forma de ayudar a nuestro padre si perdía completamente la cordura.
—¿Cuál sería tu solución?—preguntó Ernesto de inmediato.
De forma pensativa, Carlos dijo con calma:
—Conozco de unos lugares que se dedican a tratar a este tipo de pacientes con trastornos mentales y de esa forma darle la vida más cómoda posible a pesar de sus problemas.
—No serás tan idiota de pensar mandar a papa a un manicomio, ¿no?—preguntó Ernesto con enojo.
Por supuesto que Ernesto sabía de los manicomios, pero para él los manicomios era un sitio donde solo los dementes peligrosos vivían. Ernesto se negaba a abandonar a su padre en un sitio tan deprimente y lo más importante era que Ernesto prefería acompañar a su padre en su locura antes de abandonarlo al cuidado de otros desconocidos.
—Esa era mi idea...—Comentó Carlos con calma —pero no a cualquier manicomio, Ernesto. Conozco uno en Inglaterra que sería perfecto para papá. Si realmente papá está tan mal, sería mejor mandarlo a un sitio donde haya gente que se especializa en poder mejorar la calidad de vida de nuestro padre.
—En Inglaterra...—Murmuro Ernesto con dudas; porque un país extranjero podría tener la solución para tratar mejor a su padre—Si papá va a Inglaterra, será un largo viaje para visitarlo y mis hijos están en la edad de tener nietos. Me podría ser complicado viajar en el futuro...
—Mejor vayamos a verlo y luego debatamos el asunto más en profundidad—Comentó Carlos, ya algo impaciente por ver el verdadero estado mental de su padre.
