《Breaking the Chains》Chapter 17: Battle Class

The sun slowly rose in the horizon, its light passed through Aegon's window and landed on his face prompting an annoyed snort, he was still tired from cultivating the day before but still managed to drag himself out of bed.
After changing into a new set of clothes he walked outside into his still empty garden.
[ Maybe I should start planting spirit herbs even if they have a small effect. It's always helpful…. Yeah I should go buy some seeds at the Resource Hall, they should sell that kind of thing there.]
Stretching his neck towards his neighbor's yard he saw some kind of spirit herb that he didn't recognize planted there.
[ Ok, he already planted something and we just arrived. I doubt he completed any mission so there have to be some seeds that can be bought with outside money.] Taking mental note of this he stretched one more time, to get rid of his laziness, opened his room’s door so that the still sleeping Kuro could exit and then both man and wolf made their way towards the class scheduled for that day.
Today's lecture was in an outdoor amphitheater that was carved into the side of a mountain which Aegon heard was named…
[ Martial Summit, really? A shame they didn't name it Sacred Bond Martial House Peak or something, that would have been the pinnacle of creativity.] He thought with an ironic tone, barely holding his laugh.
“Ba Dum Tss” He unconsciously said out loud the line that completed his joke.
The other disciples gave him a weird look but soon turned to the center of the amphitheater where a young but rather average looking woman was silently waiting for everyone's attention.
After a few moments silence descended and she started speaking in a melodic voice.

“Welcome everyone, yesterday you had your class with the First Elder about basic cultivation and ended up choosing your cultivation technique, today is a natural follow up to yesterday's class.”
She looked around and saw that the students seemed confused with something she said, however only a few seconds later some of the smartest ones seemed to have gotten to a conclusion and were showing helpless smiles, they soon explained to their colleagues who in turn spread the world even further until everyone seemed at first enlightened and then helpless.
This scene prompted a frown from the female teacher. She couldn't figure out what provoked this reaction but after recalling her phrasing and one name in specific she too sighed and wore a helpless smile.
“Cough Cough” After fake coughing twice to regain everyone's attention she continued talking.
“What good does cultivation do if you can’t defend yourselves? Not much. If a person finds themselves embroiled in a conflict and they don't possess any combat skills, all their hard work cultivating and meditating could be lost to someone a lot weaker. So when I said this class is the natural follow up to yesterday's cultivation class it's because I believe that you need a way to protect what you have worked for.”
“Now in this first class each one of you will fight two times against two of your fellow disciples so that I can have an idea of your current skill, in future classes you will probably be divided into your respective weapon types so one class for swords, one class for bows, one class for axes and so on.”
Aegon, who was sitting in the top rows of the amphitheater, was really excited for this class after hearing the explanation.
[Good, after yesterday's cultivation this is exactly what I need!]

“Oh, I just remembered, my name is Julia, you can just call me Miss Julia, anyways who wants to fight first?”
Swoosh.
Instantly, 52 hands shot into the air.
This prompted a pleased smile from Miss Julia.
[ This batch seems to have some ambition.]
“Since everyone is willing, that makes my job harder”
Taking a note from her back pocket and looking at all those names she decided to just choose the two first names which happened to be…
Aegon Silver, Age 15, Rank 831
Anna Cade, Age 15, Rank 838
“The first battle will be Aegon Silver against Anna Cade.”
Both the disciples walked fast and soon were in front of Miss Julia, waiting for her signal.
Across from Aegon a girl around 1.50 m tall with a cute face was wearing a day dress that covered half her legs .Half covered and half exposed, a dagger could be seen strapped to her leg.
Miss Julia gave them an overall look and noticed their weapons were a short dagger and the infamous twin swords which made her eyelid twitch.
[The First Elder did it again...]
“Sigh”
“ You can go all out but only with your weapons, pets are not permitted, fighting with pets will be addressed in another class.”
Kuro instantly sat his butt to the side of the arena, waiting for his owner to finish his battle, and at the same time a small snake that had been hiding under her dress snaked out through the collar and snaked its way to Kuro’s side.

The Trials of Bethany
Bethany, is a young girl who didn't expect anything more from her life than to spend her time churning butter and trying to ignore the abuse of her fellow village members. In any other world this would be a reasonable expectation for a person in the middle ages. But Bethany was lucky, or unlucky depending on how you look at it. Because her world was about to get a whole lot bigger, and a whole lot scarier. The Trials of Bethany, is a Gamelit story of a system arriving on earth in the middle ages with the characters being teleported away regularly to face trials to earn their skill levels. As such there won't be a flood of skills however there will be constant progression and other hidden treats. The story will be evolving as it's written and as always aspects of the story/world are prone to change. This is my first serious attempt at writing and my first time publishing anywhere so all constructive criticism is welcome. Currently uploading Tuesday & Friday with occasional bonus chapters.

War Beast
The future is savage. Jenny Summer is a news reporter who hates her job. One day, an accident sends her through a time portal, straight into the distant future. A future of warring Beastmen tribes, deadly monsters, and magic from beyond the imagination. When the savage world is full of many threats, how will the average modern-day girl survive? Author's Note: This is a rewrite of my fiction with the original title. Instead of changing my chapters in my other draft, I made a copy with a different beginning and a few new chapters. The beginning will move straight to the fantasy world like most Isekai light novels. As usual, each chapter will go between 500 and 2,000 words. I deleted the other draft since this draft will be my focus. Enjoy and let me know what you think of this new draft. There may also be grammar and spelling errors too. This series is still in development.

The Mentor
This one is for my daughter. She talked me into it (again) and it is her favorite genre of books. So, Bet, this one is for you. The true-bloods, the masters, they came first. That was hammered into Heath's head since he could walk with both words and fists by Karen. As a guardian and half-blood bastard of his vampire father, he would never know peace. His duty as a dhampir, his duty was clear, his fate sealed. Heath was to serve Gerald, an aging Vampire Lord, one who was of pure blood, born to the race, until Heath outlived his prime and then he would pass on the knowledge that was passed to him onto a new bastard to carry protecting the bloodline. But was it necessarily his fate? Could a sterile half breed such as himself, someone who did not exist in the human world, live anywhere in the world on the light? After a particularly nasty encounter with his Mentor, Heath is on the run. Set on not becoming the new guardian and knowing that decision has now marked him for death. The hunt is on and somewhere behind him is Joshua, the heir of his Master, and the thing that plagues his nightmare, his Mentor Karen.
