《Chasing the New Girl - (Complete)》Chapter 55

"Jolie I'm home!" Austin called out, walking through the front door of their apartment close to the Harvard campus, smelling something amazing coming from the kitchen. The lights were all off and he walked into the kitchen to see Jolie at the table with two tall candles burning and two plates of dinner ready, with some soft music playing in the background.
"Wow babe! What's all this?"
Jolie got up when she saw him and walked over and gave him a kiss.
"This is for our date night. I thought we could eat dinner here and then maybe go out to do something after?" she suggested. No matter how tired or exhausted they were after the long days of class they had kept to their promise of having a date night at least once a week.
"That sounds great," he said, sitting his bag down on the couch and taking a seat at the table, breathing in the smell of the lasagna and garlic bread she had made from scratch. "This looks amazing," he said, reaching across the table and taking her hand in his, rubbing his thumb across the top of it softly.
"You always look so handsome in your doctor scrubs," she said sighing. He had been logging some volunteer hours at the children's cancer hospital observing clinical trials and he had to wear scrubs for it. He didn't have too much free time though with juggling football practices, classes, and spending as much time with Jolie as he could.
"Oh guess what!" she said. "They're taking on first year interns to help with a murder trial and I was one of the three they selected! I'm so excited!"
Austin smiled and said, "That's amazing Jolie. You deserve it."
"My Dad is coming to lecture our class next week so that should be interesting. I really hope people don't think I just got the internship because of who my Dad is."
"You got that internship because you're literally the smartest person I've ever met in my life and you're going to be an amazing lawyer Jolie. Don't forget that. If people think anything else then fuck them."
"Well I guess I do have some practice solving cases. I did figure out who was behind the betting website in high school," she said and then her eyes got big when she realized what she had just said and she gasped and clasped her hand over her mouth.
Austin narrowed his eyes at her and said, "What? What do you mean you figured out who was behind the website?"

Jolie sat there paralyzed and couldn't believe she was dumb enough to say that. 'What was I thinking?' she thought. In the past 6 months everything had been good between Austin and Ryan after Ryan fully explained what happened with Mandy the night of the party and they had become friends again but Blaze was definitely his best friend now.
Austin stared at her waiting for an answer and then he stood up and picked his chair up and moved it over to her side of the table right next to her, taking a seat and holding her hands.
Jolie looked down at them and her eyes started to burn. Pretty soon a tear fell down her cheek and Austin wiped it away with his thumb.
"Look at me," he whispered and she lifted her face up to look into his blue eyes.
"Please forget I said anything Austin. I really didn't mean to say that and I don't want to ruin everything. I don't want you getting angry and doing something crazy and getting kicked out of Harvard. You're still on probation, remember? If you lose control of your temper again it could ruin everything. Not only that but it could ruin a really good friendship for you if you know and I don't want to be responsible for that," she said quietly.
Austin looked at her thinking and said, "It was Blaze wasn't it?" he asked.
"No! No! It wasn't Blaze," she said quickly, reassuring him and he exhaled.
"Good. I'm glad it wasn't him, but then who was it?"
She looked down again and whispered softly, "Ryan" and Austin's jaw dropped. She looked up and saw the look of shock on his face and instantly regretted telling him.
"Austin. He came to me to confess at graduation but before he had a chance I told him I already knew. He apologized for everything and actually gave me all the money from all the bets and even doubled it. The check was for $65,000. He said I was the winner because I never slept with anyone so everyone's bets were wrong. He apologized to me for all of it. He made that site before he even knew me Austin. He's already been through so much and he's about to my stepbrother. Please don't be mad at him about this. Please Austin," she begged looking into his shocked eyes.
He sat there thinking for a minute before finally saying, "I just can't believe that my best friend for so many years did that to me. I had so many conversations with Ryan about trying to figure out who was behind the website and about how bad I wanted to get it shut down and he even pretended to be helping me find them. That's so crazy," he said, still processing this new information in his mind. "How did you figure it out?"

"When Chaz mentioned that the person running the site must have something going on because the page hadn't been updated in a few days when they normally posted several times a day, I figured out it had to be Ryan because that matched the timeline of when he went into the hospital. I looked at the website and verified the last admin posts were right before your fight and then stopped. It also made sense because he has a lot of money and connections to high-end tech people through his Dad's company and he could afford to have a professional website built that fast overseas that couldn't be traced by police."
"You're so smart Jolie. See I told you you're going to be an amazing lawyer, but you don't have to worry. I'm not going to go crazy and go after Ryan. I already almost beat him to death so I figure that's punishment enough for what he did, but I know now what kind of person he really is and that I can't trust him like I thought I could. I'll be friendly with him when I see him but we'll never be as close as we used to be."
Jolie was so relieved to hear that he didn't want to go after him again.
"I've got Blaze for a best friend now anyway and he's proven over the last year that he's more loyal and a better friend to me than Ryan ever was," Austin said smiling. "I still can't believe he straightened his grades out enough senior year to get into college at Illinois State with Bailey," he said laughing.
"Yeah I know. I knew Bailey would be a good influence on him. You played a big part in that too Austin. I think you inspired him to try to be more like you."
"I hope I made a little difference for him. He's a good dude and I just feel guilty that I chose Ryan over him when we were younger and that led him down a bad path with the wrong friends. I'm really glad he's back on a good path now. After he helped the police put away all of those drug dealers he said he knew that was what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. I talked to him yesterday and he said he wants to be a detective after he graduates with his criminal justice degree from ISU."
"That's great. That really is the perfect job for him. I'm so glad to see him and Bailey so happy. I think I'm pretty good at being a matchmaker. Maybe I should do it more often."
"Hey are your Mom and Mason still planning to come down for my football game this weekend?" Austin asked and Jolie nodded.
"Yeah. They just got all of her stuff moved into his house and she said they're flying out on Thursday and they plan to stay and visit the whole weekend. Oh yeah I forgot to tell you! We just got our invitation to their wedding. It's going to be this summer in Hawaii! I can't wait. I've never been there and I know we're going to have such a good time," she said excitedly. "I'm just so glad to see her and Mason so happy together."
"Me too. It's so weird that Ryan's going to be your stepbrother," he laughed. "You know I always said growing up that Ryan was my brother but now he's going to be my brother-in-law. He was always unofficial family before so now it'll be official."
Jolie thought about it and said, "How is he going to be your brother-in-law?"
"Because he's going to be your stepbrother and when you and I get married he'll be my brother-in-law," Austin said, casually taking a bite of his food as if he hadn't just dropped the word marriage.
She noticed he didn't say IF you and I get married. He said WHEN you and I get married. The thought of marrying him made her face blush and her heart melted as she smiled down at her plate of lasagna, pushing it around with her fork.
When she looked back up he was smiling at her and he leaned forward and said, "I love you Jolie," before kissing her softly.
"I love you too," she said with a smile. Being with him made her so happy and she could definitely see them married one day, living in a house in the suburbs with their children.

A Girl and Her Food
When a lost girl wakes up without a name, she quickly finds herself alone in a way that people around her can’t fix. Without a real plan and desperate to find what’s wrong with her, she thrashes and bites to stay alive. But human beings are weak things, that band together for strength, no matter who we are. Now if only she could work up the courage to ask one question... It’s normal to get stronger when you drink the blood of monsters. Right? Things to expect: - A powerful but kinda neurotic and emotional protagonist, with some degree of weak to strong. Or maybe strong to stronger, honestly. She's pretty rational and practical about things but won't always make the best decisions, so be warned if you super-dislike characters doing dumb stuff for emotional reasons sometimes. - Lots of dialogue and characterization, especially as we get more into it. It's focused on a single POV, but there might be some sections of other POVs later on, I'm not sure right now. - Magic is on the softer side, but I'll try to keep things fleshed out enough to avoid any obvious "well-established magic could have seemingly instantly solved this problem" moments. - I didn't add the mystery tag because I feel like it implies that this is a detective novel or something, but the story is absolutely incredibly opaque at times. So you'll have the most fun if you go into it trying to puzzle out the nature of events before they're explicitly explained!😇 - Also, I added the genre for completion, but it's gonna take a while to get to the romance. Please wait warmly and have some tea. Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge!
