"Aight, how I do?" Matthias asked, putting the edge brush down after he finished his daughter's hair.

"I like it, you're getting better" She smiled, looking in the mirror as he put Aunt Jackie's curl cluster on her ponytails. Matthias smiled, glad that he had gotten better.

He's always been a single father, especially since Kennedi's mother Cora, walked out on her 1 year ago for a man.

He's been learning how to do her hair more instead of just putting it in a ponytail. Usually, his moms or sisters would do her hair but he had to learn himself because they aren't always available.

"I look pretty?" She turned around and smiled. He smiled and nodded "You look, beautiful angel. Go put your shoes on so we can head out" He kissed her head.

"Okay, can we match?" She asked, he looked at her Pink Nike suit she had on and his Black Nike tech suit he had on then nodded.

"Crocs?" He chuckled, already knowing what she was going to say. His sisters got her hooked on crocs since they always have her wearing them when they're out.

"I wear pink and youuuuu wear black okay?" She instructed, pointing her finger at him.

He chuckled, he always wondered who was the parent there, him or her "Okay Mami, hurry before we're late" He sent her off.

He honestly didn't want to go to his best friend's celebration for this marriage. He was tired from all the meetings he had this whole week.

He recently just took over as head architect after his boss, Cain retired a few months ago. He was now the CEO of C&M Architectural and Real Estate. It was a really big responsibility to thank on but this is what he's been working for since he started working there 3 years ago. He was glad over the course of 3 years he's been preparing for this position.

After closing all the hair products and putting them back, along with the brushes. He walked out of his bathroom, fixed his chains, and took his durag off.

"I'm readddyyy" Kennedi walked backed into his room fully dressed with her little pink purse on her shoulder and her hand on her hip.

"Let's go daddy. We are 5 minutes late" She fussed, he shook his head at her. He had the most bossy daughter ever. He put his black crocs on, grabbed his wallet and keys from his dresser, and then followed her out the room.

"Grab your Ipad Mami," Matthias said, helping his daughter out of the car once they pulled up to Ruben's house.

He closed the door and locked the doors before grabbing her hand. They walked to the door and he rang the doorbell. A minute later, the door swung open with a mugging Ruben until he saw Kennedi.

"Ruuuu"

"Hey, Mami" He smiled, picking her up.

Everyone called her Mami. It was the nickname Matthias gave her since, in his words, she always acts like someone's mama.

He walked in after them as they walked away and started talking "Guess it's fuck me huh?" He mumbled. He shook his head, closing and locking the door.

"Heey Matt," He heard as he walked past the kitchen. He walked backwards to see who it was. He stepped into the kitchen and saw Ruben's wife cook something.

"Hey Mrs.Young" He chuckled and side hugged her. He thought Sierra was perfect for Ruben. She kept him in line and calmed him down a lot since he met her.

Ruben was the more mean and rude one. He had a very bad temper until he met Sierra and all that slowly but surely started to fade away. He was always angry at the world but not anymore and within the 2 years they were together, he saw the changes in him and was happy for him.

"I'm surprised you came. You never leave the house" She chuckled, putting the top on the crockpot.

He shrugged "I have a daughter to take care of "

Matthias really kept to himself honestly. He went to work and took care of his daughter. He was a full-time parent that had to play the role of two. He didn't have time to go out, he didn't go out anyways if he couldn't take Kennedi with him.

She shook her head "You sound just like my best friend. Come on, she brought my niece too. She's the same age as Kennedi" She told him.

He followed her out of the kitchen. He was kinda nervous, Kennedi wasn't a people person. He noticed that she became that way when her mom left. He didn't think she understood the situation but she knew something.

She went from one day being with her mom to the next walking to her father's house because her mom left her home alone again. Matthias was beyond furious, his 4-year-old daughter was walking the streets alone, crying and scared.

He would have never known that she was walking towards his house if he didn't come to check on her because she usually called him all the time throughout the day but that day she didn't. He knew he had to see if she was okay, while he was driving into the apartment complex, he saw her at the gate, crying.

He thanked God every day nobody took her or she was hurt. He wondered why she didn't just call him instead of just walking out of the house. She knew better not to do that but her Ipad was dead and her mother took the charger.

He would have never thought Cora would do something that low like that. She had been acting differently when she got that new boyfriend Randy the year before but he didn't think she would go so low to abandon her daughter for him.

Of course, he told her to never show her face around anymore. She had one time to show her face or try to come close to Kennedi or he had something for her.

Kennedi was forever going to be straight without her.

Kennedi hasn't been the same since. She had attitudes and it was like she had some type of anger inside of her the way she talked to people she didn't know. He understood, that's why he was thinking about getting her into therapy. He really didn't want to because she is only 5 but he knew if he had to or it would affect her badly as she got older if she didn't get her anger together.

"Daddy! Why didn't you tell me that my friend was going to be here" Kennedi ran up to him. "Hi, Ms.Si" She waved, shyly.

She was kinda nervous around her because she was mean to her when she first met her. But she fixed it and just thought Sierra didn't like her because of it which wasn't true especially after Matthias told her about her mom's situation.

"Hi Mami, You so pretty" Sierra smiled and waved back. Her eyes lit up "Thank you, me and my daddy matching, see" She grinned, pointing to her outfit and her dad.

Matthias chuckled "I seee, it's so adorable" Sierra chuckled.

"But daddy, why didn't you tell me? We should've left the house earlier" She threw her little hands up.

He furrowed his eyes, looking confused "You have a friend?" He genuinely asked. She blankly looked at him "Yes! the one I've been telling you about all week" She fussed.

"You already know Sarayah?" Sierra asked.

"Yes, Come on" She grabbed him and dragged him to where Sarayah was. He stopped when he saw a little girl sitting on a woman's lap being occupied by her phone with another woman next to them on her phone.

The same fine woman he saw when he picked Kennedi up from daycare earlier this week.

He didn't mean to stare but she was gorgeous. He couldn't really see her face because she had on a hat right now but he knew it was her. He would never forget someone so beautiful.

"Daddy, this is my friend Sarayah and her mommy"

She looked up and warmly smiled "Hi, it's nice ta' meet you" She held her hand out.

Damn, he said to himself. Her beautiful smile and her angelic voice had him stuck, staring at her until he felt Kennedi nudge him.

Her friend chuckled "You as well" He said smoothly and shook her hand. He hoped he didn't make her feel weird from staring so hard, he didn't usually stare but God truly blessed her he thought.

"Lani, this Matt. Ru's best friend. Matt, this is my best friend Ailani" Sierra introduced them as she sat next to Lani "That's my other best friend Lyric on the side" She added.

They nodded as Lyric looked him up and down before going back to her phone.

"Where are the rest of them at?" He asked Si, referring to his other best friend Keith. She pointed to the back, he nodded and looked at Kennedi.

"You wanna come with me or you're okay?" He asked. He knew she didn't know them like that except for Sierra. He didn't need her being uncomfortable if he wasn't around.

"I am okay" She nodded, he nodded before looking at Lani one more time who was already looking at him. He chuckled under his breath when she quickly looked away when he caught her.

He gave his daughter her tablet and bag with snacks in it before walking to the back.

"This nigga finally out the house," Keith said once he walked outside.

Keith and Ruben have been his best friends since middle school when they all got into this fight with these boys that tried to pick on Keith. They were just going to mind their business until they tried to jump Keith for no reason and nobody looked like they were going to help so Ruben and Matthias did. They all bonded while in the principal office waiting for their parents. They have been close ever since, they did everything together. They even work together now, Ruben was head construction worker over all the other workers and Keith was the PR person for the company.

Matthias chuckled, shaking his head. They always act like he doesn't have a new job and daughter to take care of. "I'll go back home right now"

"This is Bari, Sierra's brother and his wife Bonnie. This is my brother Matt" Ruben introduced them before focusing back on the meat that was on the grill.

He nodded his head to them as Bonnie smiled and waved.

"You look like shit," Keith said bluntly to Matt. He sucked his teeth "I'm tired. Been running about Ken all day and meetings after meetings all week" He sighed.

"This is what Cain has prepared you for since he hired you," Ruben said, Matt nodded.

He was fresh out of college working when he got hired to be his assistant. He was a normal assistant though, he helped out with plans and designs for different builds, homes, etc.

At 23 years old, the first year working, he made his first 2 million off 4 homes.

Matthias sipped from his drink as he watched his daughter and Sarayah talking Ailani's ears off. She seemed so interested in the conversation.

He smiled to himself at Kennedi engaging in conversation with Ailani without being stand-off-ish or rude like she usually would be with new people.

Kennedi ran over to him "Daddy can I spend a night with Rayah?" She smiled.

He looked at her weirdly. "No" He shook his head, she frowned "I'on know her parents for you to sleep over their Mami." He explained.

"One day, just not right now okay?" He smiled gently, she smiled and nodded then grabbed his hand.

"Come on, you have to get to know her mommy" She tugged on his hand for him to stand up. "I- umm, Ken, I didn't mean right now." He said, shaking his head.

He was kinda nervous to make conversation with her which he didn't know why since it never happened before.

"Pleassee" she pleaded, giving him the puppy eyes "You said you have to know her mommy and she's sitting right there for you to get to know her." She pointed her little finger to where Lani was.

He looked down at her and sighed. He was happy she made a new friend and didn't want to mess it up for her. He stood up and let her take him over to the couch.

Lani laughed "I told her she had to ask you first to spend a night," She said when Kennedi pushed him to sit beside her.

"He said he had to get to know you first" She sat in his lap and she and Sarayah looked between the two of them, ready for them to start talking.

Lani chuckled and shook her head "Y'all are something else, y'all know that?"

He glanced up, seeing Keith and Ruben smirking. He shook his head, everybody was making this so weird to the point he didn't even want to talk to her.

Kennedi and Sarayah got up to leave, when they heard something about cake, leaving them in silence until Lani eventually broke it.

"So Matt-"

"Matthias" He cut her off, sipping from his cup.

"The gift of God," She said, he nodded "You know what it means," He said.

"Of course. I like it, it's different." She smiled "What do you do Matthias?" She asked, turning her body a little to give him her full attention.

"I'm an Architect, I recently just took over C&M Architectural and Real Estate." He said, her eyes widened "Mr.Cain and Mason's business. Wow, that's really good. I know you smart, all those numbers and shapes" She chuckled, he laughed a little and nodded.

"It's not that hard as it seems but I'm a person that loves math" He shrugged.

She nodded "What made you choose that career path?" She asked.

He was taken back from the question. Usually, people didn't care to know or ask about that part. They just brushed past it and went to see how much money he makes from it.

He couldn't explain off this one question he asked but he could tell this conversation might lead to something he might enjoy in her future.
