《A beautiful mistake》62

"I know. I know but something happened at home. I'll tell you all about it", Ruby spoke over the phone hanging up and placing the phone in her purse as soon as she heard the last call for her flight.
Looking back at the cloudy weather behind her, she sighed inhaling as much air as she could before taking her bags and getting into the plane like the rest. As soon as she spotted her seat next to a breastfeeding mom, she went there and sat. She pondered over everything that happened in New York.
Actually nothing happened in New York, atleast she went site seeing, went to Central park, got a view of the Empire building, ate American food like buffalo wings, fried chicken, french fries, corn dogs among others. Although New York didn't bring the kind of feeling she wanted, she realized home was where her family was, her memories were where her family was.
The thought of Kylie being sick traumatized her. The last time she was sick, Ruby ended up getting the shock of her life after the doctors told her Kylie had streptococcus pneumoniae. Ofcourse they said, it was normal for children her age to get it but that didn't ease Ruby's nerves. They had stayed over at the hospital with Marc for three days straight praying that their only daughter would be fine.
The thought of Kylie getting another sort of disease didn't let Ruby rest easy. Marcus claimed it was a fever but mothers knew better. Not that Marcus wasn't good at taking care of their daughter but what would a man know when it came to taking care of sick kids? Did he even measure her temperature? Did he even ask the doctor to run some tests? Did he stay in her room to watch over her or did he just assume that the fever would go away on its own?
Had he ensured that Knuckles was with her the whole time? Kylie wouldn't do anything or go anywhere without that doll which instantly made Ruby regret buying another teddy for her. The teddy was good at first, it kept her company, acted as a way to make her eat solid foods but now? It had outgrown it's usefulness. Not once and certainly not twice had she not thought of burning the doll.

Everyday it was either 'Knuckles is dirty mommy' and she would have to ensure the doll was clean and dry for her to play with. Again it was either 'Knuckles wants a tea party mommy' or 'Knuckles wants chips mommy' or 'Knuckles wants to go to school too, mom' and she would have to force the doll inside her backpack just so she could go with it to school, failure to that, she would cry or scream or refuse to go to school.
Thinking about everything, she was reconsidering her idea of buying the pink teddy bear on her way to the airport. She was bad at getting gifts unlike Marcus. For Kylie's fourth birthday, Ruby had gotten her a pink dress with long sleeves and she hated it. Marc on the other hand bought for her a furbished doll house with little kitchen and all that stuff that kids go gaga for.
When the pilot spoke over the intercom urging them to buckle up and to remain seated, she came out of her trance and the baby next to her wailed.
"Don't do this to me, Chance. Shhhh... shhhh...sleep. Come on, baby"
The woman next to her soothed singing a lullaby to lull the babe to sleep.
"Can I try?"
Ruby offered, taking the baby from his mother's arms. She was good when it came to calming babies or lulling them to sleep, something that she had picked up from raising Kylie.
She touched his forehead lightly saying shh a couple of times. She added two fingers, running three fingers slowly on his little forehead. It would do the trick, it was like giving him a little head massage to calm him down. Minutes later, baby Chance was snoring in her arms sucking on his little thumb.
"How did you do that?"
"Years of experience, I guess. I have a daughter way older than him and she used to cry all the time",Ruby said handing the baby to his mother.
And in that time, like a flash of a camera, she remembered something.
'Careful, Raque. Don't drop him'
And all she could see was the woman's hands reaching out for a baby from her arms. A baby with the warmest grey eyes she had seen.

"Are you okay-" the woman asked and Ruby smiled nervously.
"Y-yeah I'm totally fine"
Except she wasn't fine. It was the second time she was getting a part of her memories. The first memory was merely words and a rather unfamiliar voice,
'This is why I hate it when you are drinking'
And the second one, she was the one speaking to a woman named Raque, handing her a baby. A boy with grey eyes. Was he her son? But she never had children. Kylie was her first child with Marcus. Or was the kid, the child of Raque?
Either way, those flashes came as a signal to her. That Doctor Rory was wrong by saying her amnesia was permanent. Maybe she just needed a change of scenery, for her memories to jumpstart.

She knocked on the door wanting it to be more of a surprise. It was already nine p.m, Kylie must have been asleep by then.
The door opened slightly and Marcus stood in the doorway with a pair of black shorts and a tank top.
"Rue?"
"Surprise?" She lifted her hands in mid air that was until Marcus hauled her onto his chest claiming her lips.
The kiss was so gentle at the same time intense like he had awaited so long to have her in his arms.
"Mom?"Kylie's voice came from inside the house and Ruby pulled away from Marcus, watching her in her PJs run upto her.
Ruby scooped Kylie in her arms, brushing the stray strands of hair from her face.
"How's my baby doing?"
"I told you she was fine and there was no need to worry"
Marcus intervened from behind, dragging her suitcase and bags into the house.
"Well it's my job to worry. Tell me baby, are you okay? Tell me where it hurts?"
She asked placing her down to take off her shoes before they went to the living room.
"Here", Kylie pointed to her tummy.
"Your tummy? What did daddy feed you?"
Kylie hesitated for a moment before saying,
"Mac N'cheese"
"So your tummy is full, huh? How I missed you", she placed a kiss on her forehead, once again placing her hand on her skin to feel whether her body temperature was high.
"I missed you too, mommy. Did you come with anything?"
And Ruby chuckled nervously telling Marcus to get the doll from one of her bags.
"Another teddy? You got her another teddy?"
"Mrs Knuckles!" Kylie squealed and Marcus chuckled unbelievably with Ruby mouthing back,
'I had no other option'
Two, three days later she had rested enough, Carmen and the rest of her gang were back in New York planning to come back on Monday. She wasn't jealous at all rather she felt happier at home surrounded by her family. Marcus was at work and Kylie was at school after minutes and minutes of choosing who between Mr Knuckles and Mrs Knuckles would she take to school.
Marcus was right, getting her another teddy was a bad idea. And just when she thought she could have some alone time in the hot tub, the door bell rang and she left the kitchen headed towards the main door.
Standing on her porch was a rather odd couple holding what she would call pie or a tuna casserole wrapped with aluminium foil. A man who looked like a lumberjack with a one week stubble stood alongside a redhead, who Ruby presumed to be his wife.
"Heya, I hope we didn't disturb you"
"No-not at all"
"In that case, we made this little pie for you. We just moved in across Mr Jenkins' house and we wanted to meet our neighbors"
Ruby took the pie, smiling warmly,
"Ooh I didn't know the Hendersons moved. But welcome, welcome to our neighborhood. I'm Ruby Grayson. My husband Marcus is at work unfortunately. Thanks for the pie, w-would you like to come in for coffee perhaps?"
"I'm Elizabeth Sharman and this is my husband Finn Sharman. A cup of coffee sounds nice. Right, Finn?"
She looked at her husband and Finn nodded. The weird thing was that Ruby felt like the guy Finn was familiar. But where exactly had she seen him?
