《The Wallflower's Revenge》Chapter 3: The Italian Duke

Sometimes a little bit of space is all you need to realize what you truly want.
-Unknown
I was still wondering if my decision had been correct in showing Tatiana the newspaper articles. I never thought that there were such people like her fiancé and stepsister who callously planned her death. Such things only happen in novels and drama series—for God's sake!
Now I am driving to Rome in my Ferrari because my business requires my attention and I thought this is also a good time to gather information about Tatiana Rostova. Right now, she was safe in my villa waiting for my return. I instructed my servants to call me immediately when my guest left without notice. I frowned slightly. I should have not bothered to seek information about the woman staying in my villa. In fact, this matter is none of my concern anymore. I saved her. She already expressed her gratitude and I should be sending her away now—but I didn't.
"I must be mad," I told myself. Usually, I don't permit any woman to take residence on my villa in Amalfi however short it may be. Because it's simply mine. I went there when I wanted to unwind away from the bustling city of Rome.
Hell! None of my previous mistresses had set foot on my Amalfi villa—they were in my Rome penthouse. So why did I let this woman stay there until she recovered fully? I didn't want to digest more of my impromptu decision.
Instead, I recalled our last conversation before I left...
"What do you intend to do now?" I asked her casually. Right now, the spitting madwoman a while ago was now gone. She was replaced by a delicate young woman in her mid-twenties whose expression remained passive.
"I don't know," she replied. She brought her white legs to her chest and hugged them, protecting herself. "Honestly, all I could think of at this moment is my desire for revenge on my ex-fiancé and stepsister."
I was amused but I saw steely determination on her face and remembered the old adage. "Hell, hath no fury like a woman scorned."
She glared at me. Her violet eyes shot like daggers. "I'm happy that I can provide your amusement."
"Forgive me, signorina." I bit back my laughter. "Why not stay here and figure it out what will be your next move?" I suggested. I didn't know who was more shocked, me or her? I, for actually inviting her to stay here—or her for thinking I've probably lost my bloody mind—maybe I had.

"Don't worry, signorina." I assured her when hesitation was evident to her eyes. "I need to go to Rome. My business requires my instant attention. I shouldn't be back until late in the afternoon."
"Why are you doing this to me?" She asked in bewilderment as I stood from my chair preparing my leave. "Why are you so nice to me?"
"I saved you, right?" I told her simply. Because the truth I have no idea either. "I intend to protect you."
Protect, indeed. I mused as I continue to drive to the gruesome traffic in Rome. I don't know why I was behaving like this towards Tatiana Rostova—maybe because she looked like a lost child over our breakfast that I feel the urge to protect her from any harm.
Right now, the only thoughts I have in my mind were to keep her safe and the growing hatred for her ex-fiancé and stepsister.
Finally, I've been wearing my own clothes which I should be thankful that they washed them for me. They also gave me a pair of flat shoes because mine were lost at the sea last night. I felt I was back to my own element which I confessed wasn't comfortable wearing only the silk pajama top that probably belongs to Lucca Cavelli. I am not at ease when my legs are exposed and some silver-eyes boldly appreciate the sight of them. I like wearing my own things—my long dark-brown skirt and beige sweater which gives me the sense of protection.
I walked around my room in Signore Cavelli's beautiful villa. I admit I'm starting to feel bored.
Are there some kinds of books around here that I can read?
I was about to leave my room to walk around the house and ask for available books that I could borrow when someone knocked on my door.
"Come in," I said in English. I don't if the person on the other side of the door understood me.
A young woman entered and curtsied. "His Excellency said I will be your personal maid, Miss. My name is Allegra." She said in slightly accented English.
His Excellency?
"Who?" I asked. I just wanted to make sure I heard it right.
"His Excellency..." She repeated. The woman's dark eyes widened as she stared at me. "Don Lucca Domenico Cavelli, the fourteenth Duke of Caprielle."
Just what kind of joke is that? I was saved by an Italian duke. I didn't even know that there's still titled gentlemen this kind of age. Suddenly, I remember in flashback, the moment we first talked and the secret smile creeping in his grey eyes as he told me his name. The devil was making fun of me. Because I have no idea of whom he was—he had the grand time toying me!

Well, I have some news for the arrogant Italian duke. I will never again be played by another Italian man in my life. Once the conceited man arrives late this afternoon, I will make sure he understands he will never again dare to have fun on my account.
"Miss?" Allegra asked worryingly. "Are you all right?"
"Yes," I reassured her with a forced smile. It was not her fault that I was fuming angrily at her master. For now, I will try to wait and tame the bubbling anger inside me until the duke arrives. "I was just wondering if there's a book that I can borrow so I won't be bored until His Excellency arrived."
"Certainly!" The young woman beamed at me innocently. "Shall I fetch them for you, Miss? Or do you prefer to see the library for yourself?"
Oh! I knew it. This place has a library. I wouldn't be deprived of the opportunity in seeing his collection of books. "I wish to see the library, please."
She nodded, opening the door for me. "This way, Miss."
I followed her on the impressive hallways silently. For now, I will forget about my anger at Lucca Cavelli and indulge myself into his library room. I could hardly wait to see it...
The day flew fast. I didn't even realize that it was almost twilight when Allegra informed me that His Excellency had finally arrived. I took a deep breath as I waited in his library for him all day. I have a great time reading and Allegra has been serving me equally great food for lunch and teatime. I could hear determined footsteps on the hallway and I don't understand why my heart was beating just as fast as the footsteps nearer me.
It has nothing to do with me, I assured myself. It's just because I prepared to confront him that's why my heart is beating loudly on my chest. It has nothing to do with seeing him again.
A discreet tap on the heavy wooden door and the sight of him was what it takes for me to recognize what a lie it was.
"Tatiana."
My traitorous heart tripled on my chest. I could swear that he could hear it. "You must be very happy toying with me, aren't you?" I spat at him before he even had the chance to close the door behind him.
"What?" He asked, closing the door behind him. Surprise was evident in his eyes before he blanked it away.
"The fact that you forgot to tell me that you're a duke." I reminded him, crossing my hands on my chest. "Do all Italians love to deceit other people for their fun?"
He stalked after me. I tried not to be cowed by his strong presence even when his eyes turned frostily. "Do not make prejudice against Italian men just because you happened to be deceived by one."
I blanched at his blunt words. I never thought that he would ruthlessly use what he read on the newspaper articles about me and Paolo.
Unfeeling bastard.
Cold-hearted devil.
I thought at first that my savior must be sent by heaven to save me from my death. It never occurred to me that he might be the very devil that would hurt me even more.
"I'm not making prejudice here!" I denied fiercely, trying not to wince at his cold stares "I'm just making a point."
"Well, your point is incorrect!" He retorted back.
"Then, how do you explain it?"
He shrugged and for the first time looked away. "I just thought that wasn't necessary. It is a novelty to me that a woman actually doesn't recognize me."
My anger dozed a little. Was he telling the truth? I cannot be sure. I don't have enough dealing with men to know which one is honest and not. If I just knew how to read them, I wouldn't be here, wouldn't I?
"Well?" He asked in silence, his eyes held an unmistakable grin. "Are we going to continue our fighting or have a decent dinner together?"
I felt my lips twitching with a smile. The fact that we didn't resolve anything and halting in the middle of an argument was laughable.
"Dinner then..." I heard myself muttered.

They convicted the victim... now how does the victim goes on with life as a healer? As the book opens, I was in a psychiatric hospital following a suicide attempt in December 2019. What starts as a simple conversation with another patient changed my life. Most of the rest of the book tells the reader how I got to this point. I experienced profound injustice between 2004 and 2006. By opening with a story about suicide, I want the reader to understand that the injustice was not just something that happened long ago. This book is an account of all the accomplishments and successes that I had in overcoming tremendous odds and challenges. Growing up, I was paralyzed by shyness and lacked social skills, and so the idea of becoming a psychotherapist never occurred to me when I went off to college. I learned that I could overcome those limitations. I wanted to bring that hope and healing to others. Activities like that make life meaningful and bring me joy. The reasons why I was suicidal in 2019 were set in motion in 2000 when a meteor would come crashing down upon the life that I had built leaving me powerless to do anything other than watching everything burn to ashes - the home that I had, the life I had known, the love I had, my career, everything would disappear almost as if it never existed. In that one the year 2000, I could not imagine things could get any worse. But the nightmare would continue for the next few years... culminating in a suicide attempt in 2019. Now, I am connecting with others, building relationships, and finding a reason to live again. I am writing my own story of my life. I will fight against the injustice of the past and offer my gifts to the world. I have so much to offer. I have quite a story to tell. I hope you will help me to move on with my life.
