《So Dark the Night: A Paranormal Shifter Romance》Chapter 30

I glanced around the room for anything I could use for a weapon. Of course, there was nothing. I pulled the towel I had wrapped around my body tighter. I sure didn't want to go head to head with a werewolf in a towel, chances were I would end up in the nude. That was a horrifying thought. My clothes were gone and likely in a burn pile now if it was up to Diana.
I sucked in a ragged breath and slowly opened the door that led into the hallway. To my immediate surprise, nothing leaped out from behind the door. I clutched my towel tighter as I leaned out of the door frame and glanced in both directions down the hall.
There was nothing there.
Confusion racked my brain. I know it was there, so where had it gone? Maybe someone scared it away. I walked over to the door that led outside. It was still securely closed. I opened the door and scanned the surroundings.
"What in the hell are you doing?!" Leo's harsh voiced caused me to jump and my muscles tensed ready for a fight.
He jumped up onto the porch and shoved me back inside the house.
"Have you lost your mind? What would posse you to come outside in nothing but a towel?! Are you trying to get us all killed? If Rook had seen you like that, there wouldn't be anything left of us to pick up after he was done!"
"There was something in the house. I think it was a werewolf. It sounded suspiciously like a werewolf."
Leo's eyes widen and he glanced inside the house.
"I've been right here the whole time, if there had been a werewolf I would have seen it." Leo said and took a step away from me.

He inhaled deeply and shook his head.
"I don't smell anything out of the ordinary. Even if I hadn't seen it, I would surely smell it, if there was one in the house." Leo said determined and crossed his arms in front of his chest.
"I know there was something outside the bedroom door. I heard it."
"I think you need a nap and food and maybe a stiff drink." Leo said with skepticism.
I huffed and slammed the door in his face. I didn't intend to stand there in a towel arguing with a stubborn lycan. My eyes nervously swept across the room and down the hallway. There was still nothing there and nothing out of the ordinary.
I marched back into the bathroom, leaving a trail of wet footprints in my wake. I searched the room to make sure I wasn't about to get ambushed and then returned to the tub.
I didn't care what Leo did or didn't smell, I know something was there. The scariest part was the fact that Leo hadn't seen, heard or smelled it, which meant they were becoming more devious.
I washed off quickly, my eyes never leaving the door, and then stood and dried off. I tensed when I heard the bedroom door open, but calmed when I heard dainty footsteps. I walked out and found Diana throwing clothing on the bed.
A look of disgust crossed my face when I saw what she had brought in where dresses.
"I'm not really a dress kind of girl." I said and walked over and touched the material.
"Beggars can't be choosers, besides, the alpha has decided to throw a small party this evening to welcome Rook."
The fact that Rook's name was on her lips, had my hands twitching to smash in her lovely face. Most pack members called him alpha, not even Leo called him by his name, so what gave her this right.

It was bad enough that she had brought dresses, but these things were absolutely hideous. Some neon colored and others looked like that belonged in the 1950's.
"I think I'll just put my old clothes back one." I said, dropping the dress that I had in my hands.
"Sorry, those things are gone."
Diana said with a wicked smile that made my insides crawl with hate. Of course, they were gone. I was about to open my mouth and give her a tongue lashing when another female walked in. She was older than Diana, but she was also much smaller.
"Shame on you, Diana, I knew you were going to do that!" She scolded.
Diana shrugged her shoulders like she didn't know what the other woman was talking about.
"Now get yourself out of here, you have things to do to prepare for the party."
Diana gave me the once over one last time before leaving, like the other woman had requested.
"Good gracious! Look at theses things! Sorry, I'm Mildred by the way."
She extended her hand and I took it.
"Don't mind her, she's just a little jealous."
This was my chance to get a little information from the third party.
"Her and Rook were an item?" I asked as innocent as possible.
Mildred hesitated, looking me over cautious.
"Were is the word, you don't have anything to worry about now." Mildred said vaguely and handed me a dress she had thrown over her arm.
I took it. This dress was much more modern and much more revealing. It was knee length and was made of black lace. Mildred helped me get into it and I gasped when I saw my reflection in the mirror.
The neckline was deep and my pale skin was peeking through the black lace appliqué. That and the fact that it fit my form flawlessly had me actually smiling.
"Diana has her work cut out for her, if she wants to outshine you." Mildred smiled.
"You are very lovely, even in those ugly dresses, that would have been plain to see."
"Thank you." I blushed at her complement, not used to people speaking about my looks.
Mildred fixed my hair, helped me put on some makeup and finished the look off with deep red lipstick. Once she was finished, I hardly recognized myself.
"Now you are ready." She smiled and handed me a pair of black peep toe shoes.
I put them on and stood. She walked with me to the door and we walked outside together.
"This is going to be a long night." I heard Leo grumbled and my attention turned to him.
"Is that a compliment?" I teased him.
"Or a death sentence for all the males in the room." Leo continued to complain as we walked towards the other building.
A shrill whistle rang out and to my surprise it was directed at me. A low warning growl came from Leo, threatening the male that had thrown the catcall my way.
"This is going to be a long night." Leo huffed again.
