《So Dark the Night: A Paranormal Shifter Romance》Chapter 39

I jolted awake only to realize that I wasn't laying on the cold, hard ground, but in Rook's strong arms. My head was spinning, but I stood up instantly once I saw that we had indeed been placed inside the pit.
Memories of old haunted me and made a shutter run down my spine. I almost didn't make it out of here alive last time I was in here. I glanced around, looking for the typical weapons that were given to hunters when placed in here.
"Really, you couldn't even give me one small pistol?" I hissed out loud.
"You have all the weapons you need inside of you." My father's voice boomed over an intercom.
I glanced towards the entrance of the maze with a determined demeanor. Going forward was our only choice at this point.
"What exactly is the goal here?" Rook's voice startled me out of my stupor.
"Make it to the end of the maze, alive." I gulped as he stormed forward.
"Your father better pray that I don't make it to the end." Rook warned as his eyes began to glow.
"Ok, let's get this over with." I huffed as we ventured into the darkness.
Just as soon as we were engulfed in darkness, the door behind us slammed, locking us inside with the monsters that crept in this pit of hell.
"Now that is a fragrance I haven't smelled in years..."
My heart stopped instantly at the sound of that voice. It haunted me in my nightmares for years after the last time I was in here.
"Have you ever smelled anything as sweet as the blood of a huntress?" He continued to taunt.
Draco was the strongest vampire that my family had ever went up against. It had taken all three of us to subdue him and lock him in the pit. His bloodlust was unreal, before we put a stop to his evil ways, he was killing up to ten women a night. He was basically a vampire serial killer.
"And what is this other scent? Smells like a mutt to me." Draco hissed and Rook growled and shifted into his wolf.
As much as my body protested, I walked forward and closer to Draco's voice. There was only one way to go.

"I don't suppose we could play nice for old times sake?" I asked as I slowly continued forward with Rook close to my side.
"This is me playing nice, love, the sound of my voice is all the warning you will get."
I heard a sound like Draco snapping his fingers and we were instantly swarmed by the hoard of vampires that lurked in this lair.
Rook took the brunt of the hit, knocking away three of them before they had a chance to reach me. I reached towards the wall and snatched off one of the two by fours that lined that wall. I broke it in half and then broke of a shard of wood. I held the stake out in front of me, just in time to stab an oncoming vampire as it struck. I sunk the wooden stake deep into its chest and watched as he crumbled into a pile of ash.
I rushed towards Rook as he killed two more by taking their heads off.
"It seems your little dog is very strong. I'll have to get rid of him first." I heard Draco mumble.
I was moving towards Rook, but not fast enough. Two vampires grabbed each of my arms, pinning me in place. Even in their weakened state, they were able to keep me from getting to Rook.
Five or six of them pounced on Rook at once, somehow managing to subdue his wolf. Draco walked out of the shadows like the coward he was after the threat had been restrained.
"Evelyn, my little dove, how I have missed the taste of that sweet blood of yours."
Draco walked up to me and ran his finger lightly along my jugular. I snatched away from him as Rook's angry growl rumbled the rafters.
"Hurry! We cannot hold him long, he's too strong." Another one of the vampires yelled, drawing Draco's attention from me.
"I'll be back in a minute, my pet, let me deal with this dog first and then I will return and drain you of every precious drop of blood in your body." I shuttered as his fangs elongated and his nails turned to razor sharp claws.
"Do you know how one kills a lycan?" Draco taunted as he walked towards Rook.

"You have to sever their head from their body. It's the only way, but you're a huntress, I'm sure you know that."
Draco was stalking closer and closer to Rook, my heart pounding harder with each step he took towards him. All of a sudden it dawned on me that I really didn't care if I died down here, but I couldn't watch them kill Rook.
I thrashed against the vampires hold, but could not manage to break through their viselike grip. Rook struggled as well, bearing his sharp teeth and snapping and bucking to get free, but he too, was immobilized.
Finally, I aborted my plight of trying to escape and lowered myself to begging.
"Draco, please. I'll do anything you ask. Just leave him alone." The words tasted sour on my tongue as I spoke them. I was a huntress, I didn't bargain and plead with monsters, but where Rook was concerned, I was capable of anything.
"It's unbecoming to beg. You will do anything I ask anyway, you don't have a choice." Draco laughed as he stopped directly in front of Rook.
I gasped as three more vampires ventured from the shadows and forced Rook's head back, exposing his throat to Draco.
"No!" I screeched.
A warm sensation tingled the tips of my fingers as tears spilled down my face in desperation. I grabbed onto that feeling that was stirring just below my surface and forced it to materialize.
Before they knew what happened, the two vampires that were holding me turned to dust as power exploded from my hands.
Everything and everyone stood still except Draco, he moved at lightening speed, trying to slash at Rook's throat, but Rook reared back as the other vampires where stunned.
I reached for my power again, this time I was surprised when it came to me willingly without me having to coax it. I hurled it towards Draco and watched in satisfaction as a shocked expression crossed his face, before he exploded.
Rook made quick work of the other vampires as they tried to scurry away into the shadows. By the time we were finished, there wasn't a single vampire left in the horrid pit.
I rushed up to Rook and threw my arms around his thick muscled neck. I stood there until he nudged me with his nose and started towards the end of the maze. He wanted out and so did I.
We reached the end of the maze and there was a hesitation at the door opening. I was mad as hell that my father had thrown me down here. I had almost lost Rook because he was trying to scare me into using my powers. His ploy had worked, but now I was pissed and intended on showing him just how powerful I was.
I reached out towards the door and blew it completely off of its hinges. Rook and I stormed through the doorway.
Rook shifted back into his human form as the hunters came towards us. With one sweep of my hand, I knocked them all back and into the wall, holding them there as my father and Roary cautiously came forward.
Rook struck out, lifting my father off of his feet and pinning him to the wall by his throat. Rook squeezed his neck tighter and my father sputtered and coughed.
Roary tried to intervene, but I anchored him to the wall with the power from my other hand.
"You better be glad we need you tomorrow, otherwise I would wipe your sorry existence from the face of this earth." Rook boomed in my father's face and for once I saw fear dance in his eyes.
Rook released my father and he fell to the ground. Rook walked over to me as I recalled my power and the other hunters fell to the ground as well. He placed his large hand at the small of my back and guided me towards the door.
"Don't do this Eve, you can't leave with him." My father warned in a hoarse voice.
"You said a lycan lover was no daughter of yours, but after what you just did to me, I'm not so sure I even want you as a father." I said as an angry tear leaked from my eye.
My father's voice continued to boom as Rook guided me outside and out of the gates that surrounded a place I would never again call my home.
