Casidy's POV
"She was then a live-in helper for a couple in Forrest Hills, Mr. And Mrs. Rutherland. Within three years, her mother passed and the family helped her to give her mother a proper burial. They also paid someone to watch over Sandrene as she finished high school. Then after five years mark of working with them, Sandrene had graduated and was sponsored to go to England by a penpal , as dem call it back then, where she would work as a nurse and tek care a waan old man." He paused then shook his head.
"Its ok Reign I'm here, I won't judge or mock you in any way, shape or form,"
I caressed his cheek. I could sense his pain from all this.
His jaws clenched and he exhaled narrowly.
"My mother had planned to move back home in falmouth, but changed her mind upon the request of Wayne... a mean Mr. Rutherland, otherwise known as Big Wayne... They were having an affair and he promised to get her a house and take care of her."
What was it about rich men and their helpers? In almost every case, they were bound to having an affair!
"He did that yes, he bought her a house in Papine, which is 30 mins or so away from Forrest hill.... But anyways, she neva affi work or nothing. In fact, most nights him deh there wid har. And thats when I came along. Munroe... Donovon... Rutherland."
'Wait what? So Reign Rueben Whyte isn't his real name?'
He sensed the confusion in my head and said, " Jus listen Casidy, yuh soon know the full story!" With that being said, I relaxed a little and paid keen attention to him.
"So after I was born, for a while everything was good, until word got out to his wife about my existence and she was threatening for a divorce. Afta dat... is like all the feelings him did ave fimi mi mada pour dung di drain! Him neva did a leave har, still come round as a matter of fact, but him woulda just tek out him anger pon har and beat har up fi nutten."

He pull his hands away from me and hit the dash board hard twice. He was raging in anger and his breath sounded shortened.
"Reign!" I shouted, "Hey! Look at me!"
He opened his eyes and turned to face me once more. I held my hands to his chest and said, "Breathe Baby! Breathe!"
After his breathing had returned to normal, I reach up and over, giving him a tiny kiss on his lips. "You don't have to explain anything else, if you don't want."
"No, I want to" he said.
"Ok"
"I was six years old remembering him beating her, just because she mentioned that she wanted to travel to the country to clean up the family land." His fist clenched and I knew he was about to punch either the dashboard or glass. And I wanted neither!
"Breathe.... inhale... exhale" I said while holding on to his fist.
"Mi good man!" He said, even though he was clearly not. "C ano no easy lick dem deh.... swear, mi mean box, kick, tump.... Yow!" His head shook with terror.
"Is like di man a fight a nedda man to pussy claat!" The tears glossed his eyes." And him naa stop till blood a run. Whether a nose, face, mouth..."
I tried to remain strong for him. But the tears were stronger and before I knew it, they laced my cheeks.
"Mi siddung and watch it happen fi what seemed like everyday for the remaining eight years! Till mi get up waan saturday mawning and seh enough is enough and mi tell mi madda mi go kill him if him put back him hand pon har!" He turned facing the sea.
"Come wi go out!" He opened the door and stepped out. I got out immediately and held his hands.

"Da same day deh, she pack some things fi wi and wi lef Papine and come a falmouth. As soon as wi get settled and a straighten the house, a di man dat wi see a di door way." He avoided my eyes, but I could see the tears flowing. My heart waa now on that beach. I tried to hug him but he shrugged.
"Wait C, just mek mi finish!" He shouted so agressively, but I knew not to make much of it because he was angry and hurt. So for once, I'll let it slide.
"Mi slip through the back door and go inna him vehicle go tek out the spare gun him normally keep inna him car." He kicked the sand and yelled "FUCCCKKK!"
Within seconds, his knees hit the sand and the sobbing echoed the shore. To see him, the toughest person I've ever seen, cry, It ripped me to pieces. Immediately I went infront of him and he clung to my waist.
"C .... mi ...mi hesitate a likkle..... but when mi hear har bawl out and mi run go back in... mi mada blood up and a gasp fi air.... Di man shatter mi madda ribs C!"
He hugged my waist tighter then looked up at me. "Everything go dark and mi empty the clip inna him," he said almost inaudible.
I rubbed his head and hushed him like a little baby. "Sssshhhhhh...its gonna be ok. Its only the past and I am here now with you," and I held him for minutes.
He stopped sobbing and rose infront me. Using his left hand to brace the back of my head and his right, to lift my chin up to him, he planted a deep kiss in my mouth. One that surely started to inflate my cells and left me floating with lust.
'Take me now!' your horniness exclaimed. But this wasn't the time.
He pulled away and carried me over to a mangrove tree.
"This, was my bed for a whole week." He pointed to the root of it. "That night I just ran. I didn't know where to, but mi just run till mi end up ya so!" I covered my lips, trying to hold in the cry that wanted to force itself out.
"A day time mi roam di streets like a mad man! Memba eno, mi no know no weh ya so cause a town mi grow!" He peered at me, "Till him wife find mi a sleep one night! Mi no know how she come find mi ya so... but mi memba feeling her hands pon mi farrid!"
'Lawd geezas!'
"But a God send har come, cause a she save mi life and mek mi able fi stand up wid yuh todeh C!"
I breathed a sigh of relief! I thought she would've caused more trauma to him. I mean, that was her husband! And he was the child her husband cheated and got!

Vast Asleep
The story of Kingard the Binder in the aftermath of Broken This short story is the epilogue of Broken, the second book of the Chronicles of Mother's Gate series. It’s a great follow-up to the novel, a bonus story that adds extra layers but is set apart from the full-length narrative. Vast Asleep follows the story of Kingard, who finds himself caught in a world called Mother's realm, bathed in glowing light but strangely stuck in place. He encounters his greatson Varyan there, and learns that his experiences are likely dreams. As he grows more accustomed to the loving realm around him, Kingard remembers fear and trepidation about the face of the world, and he loses contact with his companion. This story answers the question, Is Kingard really dead? with a tentative no, and new mysteries brewing. It also raises the question, What's happening while he's awake? and includes an excerpt from the sister story Ride Awake, about Kingard's situation with the Colkh'rak. Praise for Tales of the Known World Bookends: Loved it. The difference between the two stories is great! The difference between the epilogue and prologue is astounding. So much light and love in the first story. You feel safe reading it. Healing. The second, so much darkness, pain and despair. The choice of vocabulary is awesome and makes an impact. And this set of short stories ties the two books together so well. -- Dana V. of Texas ★★★★★
