《Broken》Chapter 1.1 Atlas

The shaking of the spaceship woke him. He looked out the window and found the massive packed cities he would be spending the next few years hiding in. It was the first day of the new year and they would start school on the third.
"How you feeling" Evelynn glanced up from a book with a blue coat.
"I don't feel" Replied Atlas in a monotone voice. He had been this way his entire life and he knew it because he remembered being one day old. And what little he did feel was like a scream was being muffled behind a rag while being held under water in the vacuum of space.
"Oh course you do silly, you love me obviously" Levy flashed her beautiful smile
"Of course" Atlas patted her head. He was half her size but he still treated her pas a little sister even if she was older.
"Where are we going to be living?" Levy was rifling through a brochure not even bothering to read anything inside.
"The city of Dawn didn't you read the packet we got did you." Atlas adjusted his sunglasses.
"Well I looked at it but I thought it would be more fun to do some training." A flock of paper birds that had once been a packet of necessary information lay in Levy's hands and lap.
"Come on you two this is going to be great. You are going to have a normal school experience and make new friends. See new things,do new things." Evelynn turned the pages of her book.
Atlas held his book close. It's leather bindings seemed to tense as he spoke.
"I don't need friends".
I didn't have any to begin with.
Most of the other passengers were to busy taking pictures and talking to notice the slight drop in air pressure. They arrived on the surface of Mars. The air was just a bit thinner than Earth. Each breath meant just a little less here. The world gave just a little less of everything with the exception of annoyance. The dust in the air was thick and only helped to hinder his weak body.
"Let's go we have a home to get to" Evelynn’s usual calm and joyful tone made him feel what he assumed was happy. He had yet to learn the complex skill of differentiating between emotions.
They walked to a cab and paid in cash. The house had also been purchased with cash. They didn't want any paper trails anyone could follow. Their identities were fake. Atlas was able to chose his own fake name. Lucius was the name he had choose because it was something that rolled off his tongue. And because it started with the same letter as his sister's real name. His sister had chosen the name Athena.
"Where to?" Asked the cabs interface.
"Dawn, 321 Water street" Evelynn looked through her purse as it spoke.
She had to pay in advance because she only had cash. Atlas continued to read his leather book. He didn't really notice the two hours that it took for them to arrive but Levy had fallen asleep. She drooled on his arm and bit him once. Levy woke up the instant the car stopped.

She smiled her golden smile and the words left her lips "look!" she pressed her face against the window.
"It's a house." Said Atlas with a dead flat tone.
"It’s our home" Pouted Levy poking at Atlas.
They stepped out and walked into the larger home. Atlas sat down at the door steep and continued his study but Levy sprinted through the house. She was a whirlwind of joy. The house came with plenty of beautiful decorations according to Levy. Atlas didn't care as long as he had food and a place to sleep.
"What room do you want?" Asked Evelynn walking through the house.
"The basement" Replied Atlas.
It’s dark, calm, and I’ll be far enough from you both.
"Whatever you want big guy" Evelynn ruffled his hair. Evelynn along with everyone, which meant Levy, made jokes about how short he was.
"I'm going down there." Atlas motioned towards the basement.
They had spent a full week on a spaceship and his sister would let loose all the energy she had been holding in. She waited until just the right moment. Atlas made himself a nest out of blankets and sat in the center. Evelynn was setting up the alarm systems and Levy was doing nothing useful. Atlas didn't like this entire relocation thing but he knew it was the only way. He continued to read for the next three hours and only stopped when a blond haired blue eyed girl landed on him. Her eyes looked like someone had taken a sunny sky and placed the most beautiful shade of blue in them. Her gold hair looked like sunlight had been woven into string and placed on her head.
"Get off, you're heavy and you’re gonna crush me." Said Atlas.
"Shhhhh stop resisting and let me love you." Levy had a silver lining smile.
"You're annoying." Said Atlas closing the book, their mom had shown them how to read it but Levy was to lazy to do so.
"You love me!" Levy kissed his cheek and poked his belly.
"And if I do so what?" Replied Atlas.
"What about Evelynn?" Whispered Levy with mischief in her tone. She knew just how to get under his skin. He stayed silent and waited till she got bored and left. Which took about ten seconds. He fell asleep soon after and woke up the next day.
"Get your feet off me" Said Atlas. Levy had gotten in his room at night and fallen asleep. She rolled over and flattened him. He was struggling just to pick up her legs. He felt something grab his ankle and pull him out of bed.
"Hey, mind helping me?" Evelynn poked his nose as she smiled.
"If you put me down" Replied Atlas still hanging by his foot. She set him down and Levy pulled him back over.
"Aren't you going to say good morning?" Asked Levy fluttering her eyelashes.
"Good morning, are you happy now?" Asked Atlas brushing himself off.
"What about my hug" Levy had her arms stretched out and a smile on her face.

He hugged Levy and got up. He went to help Evelynn cook and by help it meant Evelynn would watch as he got to work. If she cooked half as well as she looked she would have been a master chef. Atlas on the other hand was as plain as a bagel but was a gifted cook. His eyes were the only interesting thing about him, according to the few who had seen them.
He got his apron that Levy had gotten him and amassed an assortment of ingredients. He started to cook the meat and rice. He was a master of blades but only in the kitchen. He spent the next hour cooking for Levy and expecaly for Evelynn. She always loved food, he only wished he had more in common with the food.
"Hey it smells good" Evelynn leaned down and hugged Atlas from behind.
He felt happy or what he thought it might be. Despite this happiness he didn't react in any way. He never did. They sat down to eat and Atlas served them. It was rather the norm by now. He was more or less the dad. Evelynn took care of them but she cooked by calling a pizza man.
"I'm going to the library" Said Atlas eating a piece of toast.
"No you're not" Evelynn looked up from her stake.
"Why not?"
"You have to take Levy, and I have to walk you there"
"Fine, can we go?"
"We aren't done unpacking and because that is to dangerous for you we will have to go tomorrow"
Atlas nodded and walked to his room.
The door felt heavy to him.
I'll have to fix that.
He felt his shirt stretch as Levy picked him up like a mangy cat "We are going to have fun"
She walked over to her room still holding him like a dirty animal. She dropped him in her room and began her lecture.
"I want you to have a great school year so let's work on your social skills" Levy bounced with every peppy word that left her lips.
Atlas didn't like this but would do anything for Levy.
Maybe it's time I learn how to interact with others.
"If I say hello you would say?"
"Go away?"
Levy sighed "No, one thing you could say is hello. And what if I say good morning?"
"What's good about it?" Atlas had his monotone voice throughout. They continued with this for about ten minutes.
"Maybe that's enough for today" Levy fell back in her pillows.
"Now it's my turn".
He looked at his notebook and flipped through the pages. He stopped and pulled a small piece of paper from a book.
"Just stand still" He placed the paper on her and said words a human mind would not grasp. Atlas waited and saw just what he experienced. A small wisp of light. He hit her head with another piece of paper.
"What was that for?"
"Trust me you'll see". He could see the wisp and wrote a word with it.
She sat there wide eyed looking at the wisp. It danced and was bound to the paper.
"It didn't work" Atlas began ripping the paper.
The wisp vanished and Atlas took notes down in his book.
"What was that supposed to do?"
"Well if you read the book you would know, maybe I will tell you" Said Atlas.
"I hate reading" Levy pouted.
He sighed and wrote something else on a piece of paper.
"Open your mouth and stick your tongue out. This piece of paper needs water for the ink to work" Said Atlas. She stuck her tongue out and Atlas placed the paper on her. "Now spit"
She spat and a small light gray glowing ball formed. It floated just above the ground.
"This is used for bindings. And because you have no idea what that mean I will tell you. It makes almost any human shaped thing come to life and move if I stick them together" He grabbed a teddy bear and placed it in its mouth. When he did, it exploded.
That’s never happened even with things that look in no way human… perhaps it's just me messing up.
"I did say almost anything".
He shattered the ball and it fell. He picked the dust up and mixed it with ink. He drew a symbol and it consumed the paper. It became a sheet of pure light. It emanated light and when Atlas touched it darkness stained it. It ate the light and left only darkness.
"It does something right" Said Atlas.
He still needed more practice if he wanted to use what the book had to offer. Even with all the years he spent reading and learning from the elders he hadn’t even finished the first page.
Atlas had always been more of a machine than a person.
Levy on the other had was a laid back sunshine, cally girl who loved fun. She was also the kind of girl that seemed older than she was but had an air of youth to her.
"Thanks for the fun but I'm going to get back to reading" Said Atlas.
He walked to his room and sat down. Reading the text was difficult and took weeks just to finish one page. But that didn't mean he knew all that was on the page. The pages would reveal more and more information over time. But the pages seemed to know that you understood them. The greater the understanding the more it would show. He had a slight understanding of the first page. He had attempted to read the last page but it made his head hurt. He continued until the next day with breaks for food. He walked out of his room and found his sister.
"Where is Evelynn" Said Atlas.
