“School starts next week” Said Aurora as Lucius pulled her close.
“There is a festival in six days. Would you care to go?” Asked Atlas.
“You already know I'm going say yes” Replied Aurora.
“School starts on the twenty second” Stated Atlas.
“That gives us a week of hanging out” Replied Aurora.
“What are you two talking about” Said Havana walking into the room.
Darwin galloped into the room and ran right up to Aurora.
“A carnival” Said Aurora holding Darwin on her lap.
“That's cool, and Lucius I got a message from you know who about your little friend” Said Havana holding out a oldy shaped phone.
Lucius picked up the phone and began to write a message.
“So does Evelynn know we're...” Asked Aurora.
“Well… she knows we are hanging out right now” Replied Lucius.
“You haven't told my sister?” Asked Aurora.
“Not yet” Said Atlas closing his book.
“Well should we tell her, we have time” Said Aurora.
“Are you two dating or something?” Asked Havana.
“Yeah,” Said Aurora “and he's my future husband”.
“Lucky you” Said Havana with jealousy so powerful Aurora could feel it.
“Come on let's go tell Evelynn” Said Aurora.
They walked up stairs and knocked on Evelynn’s door. Lucius knocked again and she opened the door. Aurora kissed Lucius the moment she opened the door. “Are you two dating?” Asked Evelynn.
“Yes” Said Aurora with a smile.
“Lucius can I talk to you” Said Evelynn.
He nodded and she closed the door. Aurora began to worry and wanted to know what they were doing. A few minutes passed and Lucius walked out with a red face.
“Sissy can I talk to you?” Said Evelynn.
Aurora nodded slowly and walked in.
“He told me what you two did” Said Evelynn.

Aurora felt mortified. Evelynn knew her little sister had done something with him.
“It was only once, and I had protection, please don't be mad at him” Said Aurora in a pleading voice.
Evelynn’s mouth hung open.
“You two did what!,” Yelled Evelynn. “Aurora listen, he doesn't understand things like that he doesn't understand what you two did means. He is a innocent little kid, well kinda, not really but you get what I mean. Things like that are beyond his understanding”.
“I'm sorry” Said Aurora.
“I know this is going to sound really really weird, but how did you get him to do that? I mean seriously considering how little he feels for anything or anyone, how? And he hates when people touch him. I've seen his arm get crushed in a car accident. He shrugged it off like nothing. But then he didn't want the paramedics to touch him either, I had to convince him. He is really tough and cold hearted as hell sometimes...” Said Evelynn beginning to rant.
“It just happened” Said Aurora.
“Just don't pressure him into doing anything like that again. Unless he asked you, in that case I'm gonna make fun of him for the rest of his life” Evelynn was blushing ever so slightly.
“I didn't” Said Aurora.
“Okay fine, let's just forget this ever happened because his mom will kill me if she ever finds out” Said Evelynn.
“But I do have a few questions if you don't mind”
“All right” Said Aurora.
“So, ummm, When did this happen?”
“The night before I came back” She replied.
Aurora nodded and walked out. She realized her sister had known nothing until she told her. Lucius was holding Darwin by his back right foot and he looked like the happiest pigmy war puppy ever. Darwin had grown just a few inches.

“So I was hoping we could go to that carnival, with everyone” Said Lucius.
Aurora smiled and kissed his cheek.
“Of course” Said Aurora.
She walked to the door. She smiled when he grabbed her hand. She felt bad because he treated her so well. He had never done anything wrong during their relationship. He was perfect. She felt she didn't deserve someone like him. He didn't understand what he had done to deserve to know people as kind as them. He had been so accustomed to hate he felt odd without it.
“You know the tickets cost like fifty dollars right?” Asked Aurora.
“Yes and did you forget back to school night” Said Lucius.
“No but I am really lazy. Do we have to go” Replied Aurora leaning against Lucius.
“No, but everyone will be there” Aurora was looking down at her new shirt.
It had a large black heart over the majority of her chest. They walked out and Darwin followed. He stopped and sprinted out and around the corner as fast as his fat puppy feet could take him. Which was a fast walking pace. He ran out into the street and a large car flashed in front of him. She could see his tiny body roll under the wheels of the car. Then the second wheel went over his tiny body she could hear a loud pop. The car stopped. Darwin lay motionless on the hard floor. Aurora felt like she was a split second from crying. Lucius tossed a ball at Darwin and it bounced off his puffy body.
“Get up you little shit!” Said Lucius.
Darwin sat up and ran after the ball.
A man stepped out of the car and yelled “What did I hit?” in a worried voice.
“Nothing important” Said Lucius in a calm voice.
Darwin ran out of sight and far from view. Darwin was walking back slowly with Hex. Aurora had no clue as to what had happened.
What kind of dog is that thing.
“Hi Darwin, did you escape your house again or did you happen to run into me?” Asked Hex.
Darwin said nothing but he did yip. He had yet to bark effectively. He couldn't quite bark for some reason.
“Hey, Hex” Said Aurora.
“Have you been treating my lover well” Said Hex as she blew a kiss directly at Lucius.
“Yes, and he's mine thank you very much” Replied Aurora.
“It doesn't count because he never kissed me. Who knows, maybe if he kisses me he will fall in love that instant” Smirked Hex.
“Anyway,” Said Lucius “I was hoping we could all go to the carnival”.
“Do you mean you want to take all of this” Said Hex as he ran her hands down her divine form “to the carnival”.

Even in the face of extermination, we struggled, we fought, and we endured. But just how close did we actually come? In our darkest hour, how many steps separated our species from oblivion?
