《Mutation Era》Chapter 2: A Big Red Button. Oh, and Demons-Bunnies

Before bowler-hat (Rachael dubbed him as that) suddenly left, he silently pressed a big red button while Rachael thought, “A big red button. That’s probably nothing bad, right? In movies it’s always just some kind of self-detonation button or a demon-bunny apocalypse initiator- wait that sounds pretty bad. Please don’t be the bunnies. Anything but those.”
And just in time. Moments after she thought that, Blood red bunny ears popped out through the head of a person near the front of the mob, startling the people around it. “I think I jinxed it.'' Rachael cursed in her head while retreating a few steps. She then turned to her friend and called out to him. “Hey, Eric? I think we should leave.” However, Eric was too focused on the situation in front of them to register Rachael's words. He was staring at the bunny-eared person, who had just expanded to 12 meters tall and turned into a monstrous demon-bunny.
Shaken at this development, Rachael moved back some more and tapped Eric on the shoulder. “Staring isn’t polite, Eric.” She teased, but Rachael quickly became serious again. “Seriously, snap out of it and let’s run.”
But the reminder was a moment too late, for the rabbit had finished evolving and pounced towards Eric, sending them both crashing against a building wall. “ERIC!” Rachael hollered, feeling both anger and nervousness coursing through her veins. She was ready to rush in and check if he was okay but fright for the monster that tackled Eric made her think twice. Rachael hesitated but ultimately ran away while feeling incredible guilt. “Please don’t hate me, please don’t hate me. I’ll come to save you later, I promise”, she pleaded as she heard a sickening scream come from Eric. Rachael ran, trying not to think too much that she abandoned Eric, likely to his impending doom.

Fleeing from the monster, she couldn’t help but notice that other people were also starting to transform. Not all of them, but many. Seeing this, Rachael became nervous. “Will I also turn into one of those? No, the better question is how will I survive if there are so many of the demon-bunnies? Will they go away if I offer them some carrots and a nice refreshing drink of water?”, she joked inside. Because many of the mutations were almost complete, she felt a scary burst of adrenaline and sped up, hoping to lose track of the terrifying eldritch beings before they finished transforming.
Before she got far, one of the bunnies finished transforming and flew towards Rachael, having a feral look in their eyes. Rachael was frozen in shock but soon after recovered and tried to get away. The moment of shock was enough time for the bunny however and it opened its mouth wide, biting off Rachel’s right arm. She screamed in pain, though her mind was still taking the time to add in some humour. ”Well, at least it’s not my dominant hand, so it’s not as bad as it could be. Silver lining I guess.”.
Rachael’s consciousness blacked out as the pain was too much but her instincts were still wide awake. She grabbed her pocket knife out from her pocket and sliced at the demon-bunny, successfully cutting off a good half of the head. Losing half a head seemed to have the same effect on the monster as on a human. So good to say, the demon-bunny died.” Omgomgomg I killed one of those should i go back and kill more no what am i talking i gotta run”, she mumbled as the torrent of thoughts nearly overwhelmed her but she still decided to pack up and get the hell out of the area.

“I think I’m probably far enough from them,'' Rachael said to nobody in particular. She ran to the secluded woods of a nearby forest. “Hopefully.”, she added to her previous thought. Now that she was presumably safe, she had so many questions and no logical answers to any single one of them. Rachael leaned her back against one of the more comfortable-looking trees and relaxed, too tired to worry about any other problems as she tried to comprehend what in the world happened and other similar questions. She just sat there, thinking and slowly falling into a deep slumber
…
Rachael woke up the next day in a startle, momentarily forgetting all about what had occurred the day prior and forgetting why she was in the woods and not snuggled in the warmth of her soft blanket. She recovered soon after, sitting back down while trying, and failing, to ignore the horrendous back pain that was a result of sleeping sitting down and against the hard bark of the wood. Rachael determined that there were more important issues to be focusing on, namely food, water, shelter and how to defend herself from those things.
Hmm? Don’t you already have a strategy? Her mind asked. Doesn’t it consist of screaming your head off and blindly swinging your pocket knife at the cute little bun-buns? Oh right! Abandoning your friends was also a part of it. How could I have almost forgotten? How silly of me. “Shut. Up.” She hissed at herself, questioning how she was having a conversation with her mind. Talking to yourself, one of the few signs to suggest you’re going insane. Her mind teased. “You’re so damn annoying!” She snapped back to herself, clearly very exasperated. Since we’re the same person, what does that say for yourself? I am you after all.
Rachael chose not to answer that, wondering how this annoying-as-fuck smart-ass was even remotely a part of her. She tried to push herself off the ground with her right arm but then remembered a teeny-tiny problem with that. Her right arm didn’t exist anymore. Well, it existed but not connected to Rachael and probably in the stomach of the dead demon-bunny she killed which is probably in the stomach of yet another demon-bunny.
She stopped that line of thought right there, instead of turning her mind to the evident lack of resources she had on her hand. “How can I get those things? Well, maybe I could go to my nearby grocery store and solve most of those problems for a long time! But there is one small flaw. I’m in the middle of god knows where and no civilization in sight. I don’t even know how I got here.” She let out a sigh and quietly mumbled, “I hate bowler hats.”

Life of a Core
After a disembodied voice had told him he was what amounted to an exceptionally talented rock, it had been hard to not let it go to his non-existent head. Until, random chance had decided to give him a square kick in the minerals. Which had in turn forced him to fend for himself in an unknown land, all while he attempted to make sense of his place in the world. Truthfully though, all he had really wanted to do from the start had been to bury himself a hundred feet below the ground and be left to his own devices. Yet, for one reason or another, nobody ever seemed willing to leave the dungeon-building core alone long enough to actually make one. Each chapter will average around two to three thousand words, the release schedule is still a WIP but you should expect the first six chapters to be released over the next six days. This is planned out as a dungeon building fiction, but don't expect it right off the bat! The story is a depiction of the everyday adventures (alongside an overarching plot) of what I imagine a dungeon core would experience when thrust into a random environment where everything and everyone tried to covet or eat him. I also really enjoy reading the comments and reviews people leave and would love to get some reader involvement with the story itself, likely through polls at the end of each chapter. I hope you enjoy my story! (If you feel like some of the characters seem familiar, you may have read some older work I wrote a while back under a different account. If you happen to be one of my old readers and recognize the similarities, I'm happy to have you back!)
