《Soul of the Fallen》To Overthrow the King

I was in chains this time. Despite Silvana's insistence that I was harmless and that there was no reason for me to kill anyone, the guards draped me in iron and made sure to have five men guarding me at all times. The entire escort compromised of a hundred men, and around a dozen knights. It seemed like overkill.
To think that a kingdom could call upon a force of this size at moments notice and still have issues with common bandits! It was outrageous. Who was I? Some foreign king? The small army that surrounded me gave the impression of a war about to occur. It had the appearance of an entire fort garrison.
Unlike the half trained guards that had collected taxes from the village this force had spearmen boasting of side knives and chainmail armor. At their side, they carried painted shields. There was also something in their movements that I recognized, the strong step of trained soldiers. Now these were real guards. Galahad's escort paled in comparison.
My only conversational partners were Silvana and the servants. None of the guards spoke to me. Most acted as if I were not even there. I decided to ignore Silvana. Even with her stunning display of humanity at the town she I could not forget what happened to Alice. A memory of her tears softened my hate somewhat, but whenever I thought of them Alice's screams returned. A part of the silver haired woman was human, but she was a monster the rest of the way.
In contrast, the rescued townsfolk seemed like good people. They were rather surprised at first that I would speak to them, but we got friendly rather quick. "By the look on your faces, I suspect you were scheduled for an execution this morning."

They didn't seem to get the joke. "We were..." Robyn began, but as he saw me his lips seemed to freeze. He shrunk back.
"Do I appear sick?" I asked.
He swallowed. "No, of course not! Erm, lord celestial. It's my uh, first time meeting your honourable personage."
I sighed. "Call me Leon. I'm no lord. We are both honest men being dragged into a city by a psychopathic witch woman. As three people in the same boat, it would be beneficial if we could work together. I believe you are called Robyn?" I held out a hand.
His hand shook as he touched mine. He looked as if he expected his soul to leave his body. I saw his wife shriek from behind him. I frowned. "Am I that scary?"
Robyn shrunk back again. "Men say celestials are demons reborn. They suck the soul out of men with a touch and dine on children when the moon is full. Their agreements are binding, and their curses always come true."
I laughed so hard my stomach hurt. "Demons? Who is it that are speaking these things about me? I need to curse them a few times."
"Erm, the claims, they are false?" He asked.
I felt my expression turn sour. "Of course they are! What do you take me for, some warlock? If I could I would curse that witch Silvana a few times. God knows she deserves it."
"Don't say those things! She is a kind and fair lady!" I heard his wife say. My gaze turned to her.
"Marigan, was it? You haven't seen her do the things she did. Well, let me tell you. The woman is a witch, a bitch, and a slaver who sells girls to get gangraped. Not a person you want anything to do with if you value your life. Alas, we are all supposed to be dead anyways." I pulled out a waterskin.

"I am inclined to agree." I heard Silvana say from behind me. I almost choked on my water. "Do you know that the punishment for slandering a member of the nobility is cutting of the tongue?"
"No. An interesting law, thank you for telling me." I replied. I opened my mouth to say more, but my tongue could not move. Silvana's eyes were glowing again.
"I'd advise you hold your tongue. There are men in the city who would have you murdered for less." I felt the pressure on my tongue fade. I gulped down my water. Maybe I should have fought, but logic got the better of me. I would never be in a position to kill Silvana if I was always antagonizing her.
So I decided to bide my time, for now. "Why are we going there anyways?"
"To overthrow the king." Silvana said.
I spat my water out. "What?"
"The Falcon kingdom is not what it once was. Once, the Falcon's wings covered thousands of miles and stretched from the Haunt to the great seas. Now, the Falcon's sky is filled with arrows and fire. Civil unrest brews in it's cities, and war is soon to come. Men riot in the streets for want of food, and the king is a pawn in the hands of dukes that should be his subjects." Silvana said.
"And you want to overthrow him? How?" I asked.
"The people tire of their ruler. Time and time again nobles party at the starving people's expense, and the soldiers suffer from lack of pay. The treasury is empty of gold and piled with debts unpaid. All while the king indulges his mistresses. The time is ripe for revolt. Hard times call for strong leaders."
"Who? You?" I asked.
"No, Godfather." Silvana replied. "For years he was denied positions at any court. They feared his power. But the king is weak. He will not reject such a powerful ally. After arriving, Godfather means to take the Falcon throne."
I sat down. "Wonderful, a revolution is happening, and all of us will be in the middle of it. What will I be doing?"
"I asked of you three wishes. Once we arrive, I will make them." Silvana said.
I looked around at the knights, and then at Robyn and Marigan. "For a person planning a revolt you sure aren't being secretive."
"There are wards in place to prevent the soldiers from listening, and as for these two." Silvana's smile grew nasty. "I can't risk a betrayal. It's better if they know. I trust both of you know the punishment for treason?"
I did not need them to tell me to know that it was nothing good.

Adventurer Book II - Dawn of an Empire Short story prequel- The Lurking Lair: An Adventuer Series Short Story Summary for the LitRPG savvy reader: Looking for a LitRPG that is more tabletop traditional role playing game and less MMORPG? This is probably your cup of tea. Long term progression with a heavy slice of life element. Strong mix and inclusion of ancient Greek life, values, and myths. Hence, the world can be a bit more harsh and brutish than modern sensibilities. The system is tangible and knowable beyond the MC's insights. The MC is more of an everyman than someone specifically chosen for the experience. Author's Note: This is my debut novel. Up until this point, the only thing I have written of comparable length has been non-fiction and related to history. I am immensely grateful to all the folks who have given me feedback and helped me improve my writing.
