《A Collection of Short Stories: Quiet Girl》21. More Than a Reason

You know, one of these days lighting is going to strike me down with how many people I know with huge houses like this. What kind of person lives alone in a big ass house like this? Cassie sighed and got to the door, she knocked on it and waited a bit. When there was no answer, she tried calling Hayate only to get voicemail. She sighed and took out the key he had given her a while back. "Excuse me..." She said softly as she came in and shut the door.
The house was furnished past the point Cassie assumed a single male would furnish his place, Cassie wanted to touch everything in the hallway but just kept calling for Hayate as she decided to go to the second floor.
"Hayate?" She kept calling until she finally got a response. Took you ten years! The fuck were you- her thoughts halted when she saw Hayate with a towel covering very little of his exposed chest. Cassie felt her face grow warm so she turned and apologized. Hayate chuckled at her reaction.
"Sorry, I didn't think you'd be here so urgently. Were you eager to see me?" He got closer as he said that which caused Cassie to go onto the steps.
"N-not really... I-I just don't like to be late." And I'm not kidding either, so get any funny ideas.
"Well, if you'll wait for me I'll get properly dressed and you can help me." She didn't look back and just nodded as she found her way back to the first floor. Fuck! I swear I must have the worst luck or something... or maybe the best luck? Cause' damn I knew he was ripped, but for some reason I saw him without very much muscle... looks like I was wrong. Cassie tried not to think about it and found herself sitting in a large room. Speaking of which, isn't Hayate just a little bit older than me? So why is it that he needs my help with his laptop?
While she was thinking about that, Hayate eventually came into the room properly dressed, though Cassie still had a hard on for the white shirt he decided to wear. Damn men and their hot white shirts.

"Oh, do you want something to eat while you're here? It is pretty early?" She shook her head.
"I had an apple this morning and I'm gonna eat some leftover chicken when I go home."
"Alright," Hayate said with a small chuckle as he sat down beside her. Cassie wanted to move, but she didn't want to bring attention to the fact that she was nervous, "But I asked you here because I know you're better at computers than I am and I was hoping you'd be able to find out why these files just appeared here." She looked at them.
"Are you sure you just didn't download them by accident?" He shook his head.
"I just bought this laptop to keep at home. So besides turning it on, I didn't really do much on it yet." Cassie nodded and tried to open the files only to get a publisher's notice.
"Doesn't look like anything I've seen, just to be sure this isn't a virus I'm gonna run a scan real quick." She went through his menus and tried to find his antivirus software. When she didn't find one and looked back at Hayate. "You don't have an antivirus do you?"
"I should?" Cassie wanted to just get up and leave, but she calmly began to explain.
"Yes, most people download viruses when they open emails or go on a site they believe is safe, so since we can't be too sure what is or isn't a virus or malware, you get something to do that work for you." Hayate nodded.
"There was a free one on my desktop, but I didn't feel like I should renew it."
"Well I think that'll be fine to run this scan, but I'll tell you that your laptop should have a default one that just scans your device. So for now I'll run that one and you can buy the one you had before." Hayate nodded as he got up, Cassie then went through trying to start the scan.
Once it was up, she checked the time lapse.
"About forty minutes?" Not as though she had anywhere to be, but being alone with him for almost an hour didn't sound like something she wanted to think about.

"Okay," Hayate had returned and sat back beside her, "It's installing." She nods.
"Hopefully you don't have too many devices and can just put that on everything."
"I only have my phone, this laptop, and my desktop."
"What about that tablet you had?"
"I don't do anything on there besides keep notes when I'm working." She nods, "But since we're waiting, how about I get you something to drink."
"S-seriously, you really don't have to." She said.
"You say I don't, but you're my guest. It's a host's job to be sure their guests feel welcomed." This isn't Ouran! "So I'll be back with something for you." Cassie was going to say something, but she knew Hayate would just insist and eventually she would lose to him. She sighed and looked back to the scan. "An hour!" She rubbed her head. "This can't go on for much longer!"
Cassie sat by herself until Hayate eventually came back with some water, he set the glass down and Cassie softly thanked him. Hayate sat down back beside her and spoke.
"While I was waiting, I renewed the antivirus." She nods.
"Oh good, then activate it on here." She handed him his laptop. Cassie tried to distract herself and decided to drink some of the water he brought her.
"By the way, I should thank you for this."
"You really don't ha-ave too."
"Even if you think I don't, I still will." Of course! "But it's not just for this, it's for everything you've done for me in the last year or so." She looked over to him.
"Well, it's not like I wouldn't do this for you unless I expected to get something out of it. I try to help people when I can." He chuckled a bit.
"I know, it's a bad and good part of your personality." He set the laptop down, "I personally love that about you, but I know others may as well. Sometimes I wish I could tell you to only act nice to me." And you think for some reason that even if you did I would listen to you? "But that's much too cruel for someone like you." Cassie made a face.
"Um, can I ask why you feel that way." Hayate stared at her, "I-I mean, it's just I don't really understand why... when I haven't really done much for you." He chuckled.
"That modesty of yours somewhat hurts me, but it's understandable why you would feel that way. I don't come across as the type of person who shows when they care for people." Really I just don't understand why me, but go on. "Even when I was little, my parents often told me of the spotty emotion I would show to others. Regardless if I cared about them or not, I would always have the same expression, at least by what they tell me. I began to notice it in my teens, and it wasn't that I hated anyone, but that I couldn't find a reason to show that I cared for anyone; eventually it turned into boredom. People would bother me, trying to get close and figure out why I am the way that I am, I could easily tell that was their intention however." Hayate's mouth then turned up into a smile, "As for you, you never cared. Not once did you ask me about it, either because you didn't notice or because you didn't mind. I realized that's something I look for the most in people, when they just let things be and not try to understand me. Your tolerance for me has shown that I don't have to explain myself to other people and it gave me the chance to live my life with someone else knowing that." Woah...
"I-I never thought I did that for you."
"Don't most people? I'm sure I do something for you that keeps you in contact with me." Well- "But it's alright if that's not the case. You being content with your life however it is, is all that really matters." Cassie gave a small smile. She glanced over to the laptop and noticed there was still thirty minutes left.
"Well, since we're gonna be here a while, how about we just talk?" She offered. Hayate smiled.
"I would love nothing more."

The Emperor's Chef
"Cook like your life depends on it, kid. Because it does." Charles had an enviable future lined up for him. Training from the age of five by some of the finest chefs in the world. Schooling at a top culinary academy in the capital. An honorable position as heir to House Boulier, a line of merchant-lords who have charmed the rich and powerful with their cooking for centuries. And in a single night, it all burned to ash. When the outbreak of war destroys his hometown, Charles is charged with escorting his family’s sacred treasure—a recipe book passed down for untold generations—out of harm's way. But his simple mission grows complicated when he’s captured by one of the most feared battalions in the world: the Spears of Mercy. Life as a prisoner in their war camp is brutal and uncertain. Charles has few allies and even fewer strengths to rely on. Only his skills in the culinary arts, honed over a lifetime in the kitchen, are deemed useful enough to keep him alive another day. But he’s not out of hope just yet. With a dash of wit, a pinch of luck, and some very creative cooking, he might just find a way to recover his family’s legacy and take back his freedom. This project is a food-themed fantasy that centers on cooking and chefs. The setting spans a wide world featuring ingredients/recipes both real and inspired by traditional fantasy. I'll eventually be publishing it as a full-length novel (or series of novels depending on length). These are the first draft chapters. I'll likely be re-writing more than once, then editing before publishing, so impressions and feedback are quite welcome. If you like the story so far and you're interested in being an early reviewer for the final product, feel free to message me. I'm looking for an artist to make some concept art and a cover (the cover shown here is just a temporary placeholder). A stand-alone novel for now, but it may turn into a series down the road.

Pillars Between Us
It started with the dent left by the Forest Sprite; A small crack in the ice that encased his memories. Curtis knew that something was off, realizing that he wasn’t who he thought he was and— perhaps Ellis wasn’t the one meant for him. --It's a fantasy novel set in a world where people inhabit on pillars-- (think of m*necaft sky block, you'll get what I mean) -- then give it a hint of action, mystery and (twisted) romance-- and it's influenced by Japanese fantasy light novels (cuz I read a lot of em'). But I'm sure it's a weird one cuz the style of writing isn't the Japanese to English translated kind of style but rather the orthodox English novel kind of writing (which includes a bunch of errors and broken English thanks to me!). In any case, if you're up for it, just beware the story starts out pretty slow.. I mean-- back then, I was still inexperienced ok! I'm gettin' better along the way, Hmmph!
